Dd asked her age while trick or treating last night

I agree that they're both probably a bit old to be trick or treating, but I certainly would never ask someone's age and/or deny them candy if they came to my door.

I don't know - the fact that she went trick-or-treating with her boyfriend, that kind of makes me feel they are too old to trick or treat. If you are making out (or even more) with a guy, maybe you are too 'mature' to trick or treat?

Since age was discussed so much leading up to TOTing I figured I'd post what my dd just told me. Her and her bf went out last night TOTing. They both had costumes on. One house asked my dd her age and she said 16. She got candy. Then her bf got asked And he said 18. They told him if he could buy cigarettes he was too old to get candy from them. Lol. I was in the camp that whover comes to my house gets candy. I just thought of the dis immediately when my dd told me this story today. Figured I'd share this with you guys

Yeah a bit old for ToT but I would never insult, lecture or deny the candy.

We had quite a few teenagers last night. I was amazed at their costumes. So elaborate and beautiful.

I got talking to one of the kids and she said their theater class at school really went all out with making costumes for the local Halloween parade and they thought they would put them to use and go out Trick or Treating.

I thought it was GREAT! I was thrilled to see the teenagers out in full force and dressed in awesome handmade costumes. I kept giving them extra candy:jester:

We had a good turnout last night, and while the little ones are always adorable, we had fun with the teens who showed up too. They were all in costume, were polite and friendly, and were in high spirits without being rowdy. And 2 or 3 even complemented us on our Jack o lanterns. I had no problem with giving them candy- DH gave them each an extra piece because, he said, they were bigger.

I was much less concerned with teenaged trick or treaters than I was with the teens who were running around the streets later in the evening after all the porch lights were out. But all was well. No evidence this morning of eggs, TP, or smashed pumpkins.

Until I read the Dis, I never realized kids or teens were judged of being worthy or not of a little piece of candy. In my old neighborhood, we would get about 100 kids a year and there would be quite a few teens. I couldn't imagine asking them their ages to determine if they met a certain criteria to get a piece of candy. Everyone who rang my doorbell got candy. I see nothing wrong with teens getting dressed up in costumes and trick-or-treating. They are no less "deserving" of a piece of candy than the young kids. It's all about having fun.

I don't mind the older kids as long as they dress up, no costume, no candy. Let's face it, aren't there adults without kids who go to the parties at MK and get candy? What's the difference?

I don't mind older kids either, but 18 isn't a kid. Adults without children trick or treating... well, I would not expect it unless there were special circumstances. The adults at MK parties have paid a premium to be there. It's a little different than asking people for free stuff. I might go ahead and give them a piece of candy but I'd definitely think they were out of line. Some things really are meant to be for children.

We are a group of adults who like to visit Mickey Mouse as often as possible. Are we really judging some older teenagers, or even adults, for wanting to keep trick or treating?

We're talking about a few pieces of candy and apparently they are having fun. I see absolutely no problem. If they were rude to me, I'd have a problem. But that's true for younger kids too.

Well one difference I can think of is those adults paid $74.00+ for tickets to the park and getting the candy is one of the benefits. Having said that, I don't care about 18 yrs olds trick or treating. I was a bit surprised at the adults that were trick or treating at a trunk or treat this weekend though. They were with their children but had their own bags and if they were getting candy for a sick child or something they did not say that. Just seemed crazy, go to the store and buy yourself candy.

But free candy tastes better! Ha. I got the "how old are you" when I was 11. I had reached my full height of 5'4", but had to take my younger brothers ToT anyway.

We get very few. My favorite was the tiny tot that kept helping himself to the bowl while I talked to his parents. Maybe that was the plan, lol.

There was a trunk or treat at a local church last week and I noticed that there was a set age. I believe it was something like 12 and under. So for something like that I feel you need to follow the rules. I would hope that the adult was prob. TOT for a child. Many years ago my young son had a broken leg and he TOT for a short while but he just couldn't go up to every house. He waited in the driveway while his little friend took his bag up for him and TOT for him. It was very sweet and we appreciated it.

I don't like visiting Disney World because Mickey Mouse is there.
I think it's super funny that this 18 year old is being referred to as a kid. There are so many nasty, rude, unforgiving things said on these boards about 18 year olds when posters don't agree with something they do. Posters even have the unforgiving attitude about 16 year olds when they don't agree with their behavior. Suddenly they are being referred to on this thread as kids. Um, ok.
Yup it's totally normal for a 16 and 18 year old to trick or treat.

Sorry that you think my 16 year old is not normal for going trick or treating. You seem really bothered by it. I just thought since there were so mAny TOT threads that some of you would get a kick out of this.

No older teens at my place, but I had some younger teens who had terrific costumes and were terrific kids. The only group that gave me pause was when a tractor towing a trailer chugged down the street and disgorged 20-25 kiddos who swarmed the block. They weren't bad kids per se, just hard to manage in such a large group. Lots of candy grabbing and a little light in the the courtesy department. It was kind of like a quick candy-driven tornado. No harm done but the candy bowl took a hit.

If the teens dress up and TOT like the little kids, I'm o.k. with it. Last night DD took her 4-yr-old and 17-mo son TOT while their dad handed out the candy. When DD got home, her DH helped her with the stroller -- took him one minute, but while he was helping he left the bowl of candy on the porch and some teens swooped in like a plague of locusts and stole 7 bags of candy. Why did the teens have to spoil it for the little kids?

Trick or treating at 16 and 18 is not normal.
I'm not really bothered by it. I'm just not going to pretend it's not weird.
