dcl vs royal caribbean

I've done 3 DCL (no Fantasy yet) and 2 RCCL (Allure and Splendour). Splendour vs DCL was no comparison, hands down DCL wins that battle (it can barely be called a battle it's such a run away). The ship was fine (and I actually prefer the smaller DCL ships) but lack luster, and the service was mediocre at best, very slow, shows were amateurish and I felt like there was not a lot to do. They were friendly, but slow. The food had a wider range from good to fair than Disney (to me in MDR it's good to almost good on DCL). But the ports it took us to were great, but not nearly as organized as DCL and we felt we got bad info left and right and everyone had a different answer to things (like what deck do we get off the ship on?). Overall if that was my only RCCL I'd probably pass unless I got a great deal. Now, I've also done the Allure (one of the newer big ships) and really liked what it had to offer. SO many activities, and the service was comparable to DCL and the food very good. I will say I don't like my time dining either, I like the rotation of the DCL restaurants for variety but having my routine and serves with me
(for my time dining unless you had one of the rotations you would miss parts of the shows); but that is correctable with a fixed seating next time since they offer both. But, the thing I didn't like was that I felt nickel and dimed. I know there are a couple things on DCL you pay more for, but it seemed like probably half the things had an upcharge that you might have to keep track of (no upcharge at breakfast, but one at lunch or dinner; $5 to eat at the Sushi restaurant and then additionally ala cart pricing that really was kind of expensive sushi). You want a coke with dinner, that will cost you. It just really felt like you had to think about spending more money or not and I don't want that kind of pressure on a vacation, I'd rather pay a bit more up front (DCL) that have to decide if something is worth the upcharge or not. And I like to bring my alcohol and enjoy a happy hour drink in my room. We saw this upcharge a little on Splendour, but either I didn't notice it as much since that was my second RCCL OR because there were less options there were less things with a surcharge so it didn't come up as often. I would suggest researching the ship, and I suspect the bigger the ship the better the cruise (better staff, more activities, newer), but know that comes with somewhat of a price (just as DCL comes at a price). Would I do RCCL again, certainly. In your shoes I'd go with itinerary!

We just got off the Dec 7th Freedom western cruise on RCCL and all I can say is I feel cheated and ripped off. We could have sailed the magic for not that much more, and should have.

The ship limped to each port and needed a refurb badly. When we boarded we were informed of a mechanical issue limiting our port times, this was a well known issue and we later found out the cruise before ours was changed due to it.

The quality of the crew does not compare, they do have a couple freestyle machines but the upcharges for everything was annoying. We will not be sailing RCCL again due to the problems and how harsh the crew was when confronted with a problem, I thought I should mention it to Guest relations and wow they were even more hostile.

YMMV but for us RCCL is a no go, we did have plans for Quantum and Oasis but now they are Princess ships and DCL cruises.

I think I've responded to you elsewhere, though the Dec 7 sailing caused some really hard feelings and it might have been another person. That sailing was hard because you had MORE problems than the sailings before or after with the propulsion problems, AND you had a child with a medical emergency. Royal is (and I say this as a fan) being ridiculous and isn't giving the same credit that they gave to sailings before and after, and they are using the emergency as the reason. It's rotten.

Yes it's a known issue. The chioce Royal had was to cancel a MONTH of cruises on Freedom and bump the drydock even sooner (though I don't think they could actually move the drydock, because from what I know these things are scheduled years out) or just have a slower cruise while waiting for their January drydock.

On DCL the sodas are in the Cabanas area and anywhere with a bartender. On Freedom they are on the promenade, Windjammer (I believe), and anywhere with a bartender. Cans aren't included, but you should have been able to show your seapass card (which would have had the Cocacola logo on it for Refresh package or a sticker for any of the other packages) to get soda from your drinks package.

Freedom was AMAZING last January. But we weren't having propulsion issues, nor did we have a child with a medical emergency. I cannot imagine using one cruise to stop me from ever sailing Royal again. It's not like you were on that Carnival ship the other year.

And I would rather not pay for Cokes I'm not going to drink.

If you know you're going to drink soda, buy a drinks package.

As vegetarians the upcharges weren't even noticed by us, LOL.

Might not be what you wanted, but Royal allows us to bring two bottles of wine per stateroom.

They must have done our cruise differently for some reason then because we had different servers every night and a different table every night. I don't know...

Your experience is certainly not the norm. On each cruise we have been seated in basically the same section (usually same table) and had the same the same servers each evening. We have done MTD on multiple ships. One can certainly choose an assigned dining time if they desire same table/same servers (we enjoy being able to choose the time we dine - not an option in the main diningrooms on DCL).

Nice comparisons of your experiences with both lines.
Since we prefer the "smaller" ships of RCL i can't agree that "the bigger the ship the better the cruise". It reall all depends on what your preferences are. We found the Fantasy to feel very crowded and poorly designed to handle these large numbers - the pools, the flow in the buffet, smaller atrium ... and the dining rooms were really loud. We really missed the truly relaxing, quiet adult pool areas we've found on RCI.
I'd also like to point out that, since you decide when you eat with MTD, you can schedule your dining times to accommodate the show times, we have done so on our cruises.
We also felt nickeled and dimed to death on DCL - paying for popcorn, upcharges strongly encouraged in specialty restaurants, the expected spa high pressure sales, etc. Our onboard account was the highest of any of our cruises. We did like bringing on out own alcohol, but since we pay significantly less on RCI, the savings are relative (as with the soda package).
The shows on DCL were fantastic, the ship beautiful and of course, you can't forget the constant pixie dust!
We would also sail again on DCL, but only if we find a deal to good to pass up. RCI will remain our line of choice.

Oh the popcorn...bane of my existence on the first cruise! DS and DH just kept on getting it. We had JUST eaten! Stop it with the popcorn! And of course they didn't get the cute refillable bucket, noooooo.

I would love it if you would report back after your upcoming DCL cruise. Curious to hear your thoughts on DCL as an RCL veteran. Most of us on these boards tend to be the opposite - DCL veterans who have tried other lines. I would love to get your perspective. We would like to try RCL one of these days, but I have to admit I'm a little chicken. Hope you have a great cruise!

Yes agree! I have called RCL several times, priced them out..but just can't budge off our Disney penchant...we can't tolerate smoke, we've never had a problem with that on Disney...not sure we could escape it enough to our liking on RCL...it triggers violent asthma reactions that ruin a trip. I love the detailing of the Disney ship..so much thought goes into the details...when I watched the extent of the reimagining of the Magic, it just shows...once dh and I can cruise on our own (all kids out of the nest) then we'll likely take advantage of another line...for now, I just rely on y'alls reviews, and I honestly rarely see a Disney cruise line passenger switch over completely to RCL, but I have seen RCL switch to Disney more than not...just not into playing those odds...
