DH and I were away all day yesterday. We stopped for a bite to eat on the way home and from our table we could see a a TV, but could not hear it. DH told me that they were showing one of the Disney ships, then what looked like an interview. We strained our eyes to try and figure out what it was about. Then we could see a picture of someone in a prison/jail atmosphere, back to the ship, back to the person, and so on. We also saw what looked like a sign from Cambria County Prison/Jail scroll by.

Anyone have any idea what this news was about? We are in PA and so is Cambria COunty so it is probably just be a local item.

Just curious,
Karen

a person with a 20 year old warrent was arrested on DCL. this is all the information i know as now

I looked it up on google and this is what I found out (hopefully same story would hate for there to be two arrest) 20 years ago when a man was 19 years old he drank alot and attempted to steal two hubcaps and was caught by police he was arrested another time for drinking in public and fighting while he was drunk. he was sentenced to 3 years probation and fined 3 hundred and some dollars. anyway he moved to texas from florida a year later and married he didn't know he had to let a probation officer know he moved so the p.o. requested that a warrant for his arrest would be filed. He had no idea he had a warrant out for his arrest this happened 20 years ago obviously he hasn't even been pulled over. He is a elder in a church now and has done missionary work in hati. he as a couple of kids and owns a roofing company. The family doesn't have money left in there savings and the poor guy can't get out of jail until thanksgiving. he has a daughter that was going to go to college this year but they can't afford it now it is sad story.

If I remember correctly there were actually two post Disney cruise incidents with immigration where they picked up families for decades-before minor infractions (compared to murder, kidnapping, robbery, etc...) and gave them a really hard time. Check the cruise reports board... I originally read about them there. The one last night involved a really old case where a convicted lawbreaker Parole violater left his county without notifying the parole officer some dozen years ago..... Another was hassled for an old warrant issued for leaving marshmallows out on a National Forest picnic table (bears)...

Wow we are going camping next weekend I would hate to be arrested on the dcl for leaving our marshmallows out i have to make sure the kids put them away! That is horrible that they can ruin sombodies vacation over marshmallows. I am sure they can find more important people to arrest. not to mention the poor kids seeing daddy going to jail.

There's your tax dollars hard at work!!!!:earseek:

Now see, I read these things with a different perspective. I mean from the law's point of view, these people have outstanding arrest warrants. Alright maybe they're for marshmallows, but you have someone who has for all intents and purposes - from the law's point of view - been evading arrest. And as far as the law is concerned, if they have one arrest warrant then who knows what else they might be wanted for?

I mean really, how many times have you seen on the news items about how a wanted murderer was in custody in another state for speeding and they let him go because they didn't know about the outstanding warrants? Or people who are arrested on minor charges who they then later find out are wanted for other crimes?

Yes, there are some people who have commited relatively minor offenses who get caught by this. But by and large I'm still thankful that the authorities are out there actually keeping track of these things, so that there's greater chance that the people who actually are dangerous are caught.

Although I feel a bit sorry for this guy; I have to agree with Amberle3.
It does show someone is doing his/her job.

"The family doesn't have money left in there savings and the poor guy can't get out of jail until thanksgiving"

Well, if they don't have any money left, I doubt they would be doing a Disney cruise. If they really were completely broke, then they SHOULDN'T be doing a cruise at all.

I'm also sure that the authorities only knew that there was an outstanding warrant without details....and even if they knew the details, no doubt they were under legal obligation to take him into custody. Unfortunate considering the circumstances, but the law nonetheless.

here here! I agree with Sandralee, as ridiculous as the charges or circumstances may seem, if you can't afford to send your kids to college, or have no savings to speak of you truly need to prioritize. I am not heartless or anything, just a little skeptical of the true story behind the story, how many times has the media misconstrued a "poor down and out family" to the public outcry to help and been misled? One too many times for me. But I do hope that if the charges are as minimal as that, the family gets a lenient judge.

I remember the marshmellow story was a female and in her case there was some kind of mistake- either she had paid the fine or the judge dismissed it. Whatever it was someone forgot to clear her file-- in that poor woman's case someone did NOT do their job. I just remember how sad the story was because her kids were with her.

Should we all check our records before we leave!?! I would hate to ruin a vacation if I had an unpaid parking ticket or an overdue library book!

Oh yeah. They will issue warrants in this State if you have unpaid fines for library books. I know, I work for the State courts division that does that. You get a court order. If you don't show a arrest warrant is issued. Most of those warrants are never served however.

I saw the story about the marshmellows on the today show...it wasn't DCL......Carnival maybe??

KarenB ~ We live in Cambria County and I didn't see this on the news. Of course if I had I would have fallen off the couch. We're packing up for our cruise on Saturday!

on the june 26th eastern magic cruise our servers at breakfast on disembarkation day said that a man had been arrested and brought off the ship as soon as it docked.. I wonder if this was the same guy

It was definately DCL that they showed. But as I mentioned, we could not hear the TV so maybe it was about Cape Canaveral????

When they showed the Cambria County sign we thought it was another story, but then they went back to DCL.

Sorry I don't have much information to go by.....as most of you Disney fanatics know, when you see something related to Disney in any way, it always grabs your attention!!

drclaws.....I agree, many times things like what has been mentioned above happens because if "legal obligation."

Thanks for the info,
Karen

First of all, the very fact that he was arrested makes it clear that they are closely checking the passenger manifests on DCL. Otherwise how else would they have known?? Was he stopped for a traffic violation driving down??

Secondly, I work for a police department and most states won't pick up a person with an active warrant unless it is a very serious charge(skipping out on probation is a fairly serious breach). Sometimes the warrant will say they will extridite from neighboring states only (for example: New York will pick up a prisoner in New Jersey or Connecticut but won't go to North Carolina). I have seen some with assault charges that were left alone. For instance.. they get stopped for a traffic violation and a check reveals that they have a warrant out in South Carolina. When SC is called they say they won't extridite the individual so police have no choice but to let the guy/gal go. Happens all the time because extradition is so expensive.

One more point, if this man was on probation I highly doubt he would "not know" that if he moved he would have to tell his probation officer. I simply don't buy that. When you are on probation you have to submit to drug tests, regular meetings, etc. They VERY carefully outline the responsibilites. Probation just doesn't end when you move (or every convicted parolee would "move"). He would have known that, I am sure.

And as far as his money issues, he can get a public defender for "free" and try and work out a solution. I am sure the jails don't want him anymore than he wants them. But it will take time to figure it out and he may serve a few weeks or months before he has all his court hearings. But again, he must have known he was skipping out on his probation all those years ago. Its not an issue of the hubcaps anymore. The system gave him a chance and he blew it.
