And I'm ready to kill someone :lmao:

Seriously, for some reason, this time I'm finding it really hard. I had to go to bed at 9 last night as I was getting such bad cravings. Today hasn't been too bad so far but then it's not even lunchtime yet. I am manically chewing on Juicy Fruit at the moment :rotfl:

I think the hardest bit is going to be when I go back to work tomorrow - 3 of the girls at work smoke so I will find it hard when I'm around them, I think.

Any hints and tips on resisting the urge? Those who have given up, how long will it be before I completely lose the urge to have one?

No tips or advice, as I'm not a smoker, but loads of good luck wishes

My dad gave up smoking over 10 years ago and he still walks around with an empty 'Nicorette' cylinder thing in his mouth as he can't get out of the habit... :lmao:

I'm busy trying to knock my midweek glasses of wine on the head and that's hard enough...... ;)

Keep it up. Have you tried the patches. There is a brilliant poster on the ward at the hospital where I work. It say ' So you think its hard to give up smoking, try telling your children you have lung cancer'. Its frightening, but it makes you think. Never smoked so I don't know what you're going through but you have my support. :thumbsup2 Try having a word with your colleagues and ask them not to smoke near you or better still, encourage them to give up too, and you can support each other. I always find it easier to lose weight when doing it at the same time as someone I know as I'm so competitive I don't want them to do better than me.

As part of my job I test patients for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease - a smoking related disease - and those who have given up long term say the urge never goes, but you do get better at resisting it.

After a few days it does get easier and it's the single best thing you can do for your health and the health of your family as it aggravates all sorts of problems in children - Glue ear, Asthma etc. As a bonus, it also makes your skin clearer, teeth brighter, breath and hair fresher and you'll be less likely to get simple viruses.

Well done on trying and keep at it.

Non-smoker here, so hints or advice.

Just wanted to wish you well Joh, you can do it :)

You have done so well with your weight I am sure you can transfer the determination onto this, just dont start eating as a sbustitute, Keep on with the juicy fruit!

I saw this on the NEW POST

1st keep it up it will get easier I just had 2 uncles quit 1 with the gum the other cold turkey.

But over here in the states Off the FAGS has a entire different meaning.

Good luck

It's supposed to take 5 days to break a habit, so you'll be fine by Friday! ;) Now, if I could just stay off the vino for 5 days...

Good luck, Joh. Just think of all those extra treats you'll be able to afford. Hell, you might even be able to buy some new shoes! :teeth:

I shall be joining you shortly so we can rant at each other - when my duty free runs out I refuse to pay £5+ a packet! I'll give up going out and drinking for a while so that will stop the urge. apart from that its just breaking the habit - try and work out your must- have cig - for me its the first one of the day and then when you get past that one each day you'll be on a winner.

Well Done so far and keep up the good work :cheer2:

I am off them 11 years
it is all about will power

I said to my self I would have one later on not just this minute
the house was spotless, I just keep myself very very busy and stay away from the places I would smoke , finding something to do with my hands was one of the hardest things I found

As well I opened a bank account and put away the money I would have smoked EVERY WEEK , it was not long untill I was able to buy a fridge freezer
and I sponsored a child throught world Vision , which I still do
and it has helped towards our Disney holiday each year
DH gave up about 8 months after me

it took me about 6 months to really got over them
now I can not stand them
I could be a real anti smoker
no smoking aloud in the house

So if I can do it So can You
just think of all the extra money you will have for your holidays
Good Luck

Thanks Jackie

I must admit, I've been desperately trying to keep busy. I've been off work today so hopefully it shouldn't be too bad when I'm back at work. I don't smoke in the house anyway so it's not liki I'm tempted while I'm on the computer or watching telly. The hardest part, for me, is when I've had something to eat.

Still, 2 days down - and, yes, I'm thinking of the bonus of saving money ;)

Sorry I can't offer you any advice Joh as I'm a non-smoker too, but I wanted to say well done and keep up the good work :wizard: :wizard:

Good Luck! I wouldn't have much advice on the subject, but good luck anyway.

I find that people trying to give up can give up a lot quicker if they find a bigger addiction (that is NOT dangerous to your health). Hence why in a lot of centres they focus on Religion as a anti-addiction.

Again, Good Luck!

Good luck Joh. Stick with it. To be honest, don't think the urge ever really goes away, it just becomes easier to bear and easier to ignore. I've been 5 and a half years now and still get certain situations where I really want one. These tips may help you.
* Save the money up, at least in the beginning and tell yourself what you want to buy from it.
* Make sure you ignore all the triggers, eg nights out, summer evenings sat outside, stressful day at work.
* Tell people, so that they understand that you are going to be evil and want to rip their heads off. :furious:
* Try to find someone else you know who is giving up, healthy competition helps
* Admit that it is hard, but you can do it. :thumbsup2
Hope it gets easier soon.
Sara. :)

Hello Joh, :wave2: noticed your post and wanted to wish you all the best with the quit. :thumbsup2

After 22 years of 20 a day I gave up recently, it's not easy I used patches and there were days when I just wanted to cry and days when I wanted to kill somebody.

You might like to have a look here http://www.click2quit.co.uk/forum/default.asp It's run by a well know Nicotine Replacement Brand. There are some lovely people on there who are either going through the same thing or have been there.

Stick with it, my best day was when my 7 year old said "you haven't had a *** for ages have you mum ? I'm so proud of you" That was about 6 weeks ago. I've put on a stone and gone up a dress size, but I can work on that later, my house doesn't smell, my clothes don't smell and I don't smell, I can have a £5 note in my purse for days not hours, I can run up the stairs, I've even run around the park with the dog. :yay:
Make a list of why you want to give up, for me above my health and money it was the thought of either of my kids becoming smokers. :guilty:
If shock tactics work for you have a look at this
http://www.packwarnings.nhs.uk/
non smokers can give their opinions too.

and I found this little counter thing a godsend too, it runs on my computer so I can check anytime.
Two months, one week, one day, 23 hours, 6 minutes and 59 seconds. 1399 cigarettes not smoked, saving £349.81. Life saved: 4 days, 20 hours, 35 minutes.

Very best of luck Joh - you can kick it. :)

Thanks Jill and Sara - some great tips there :thumbsup2 Well, I must say I am feeling a lot calmer this morning. Day 3 and it doesn't all seem as bad as it did yesterday. I am going to put the money I would have normally spent on cigarettes each month in a savings account and hopefully, will get a trip to WDW out of it eventually. Will be interesting to see how many months/years as a non-smoker will get me to WDW :rotfl:

hey Joh
I've been quit for 6 months now, and although there have been some tough moments (especially lately :Pinkbounc ) I can honestly say that after 2 weeks i couldn't bear the smell, after 3 weeks my asthma improved dramatically, and after 4 I could actually jog on a treadmill without my chest tightening. yes I too put on a stone in weight but everyone says its better to be overweight than a smoker, easy for them to say huh? I think you'll be fine, just keep at it, you've done the hardest part already which is the first few days. Good luck xxx

I realize this post is on the UK board, but I saw it when I searched for today's posts. Just an FYI that to many people in the states the "f" word you put in the thread title has the same type of negative connotations as the "n" word referring to people of color.
