OT: Currently have a sofa bed that is not too comfy to sleep on - wondering if anybody had opinions on whether a day bed or fouton would be more comfortable than the sofa bed....

TIA! :thumbsup2

In my experience, the fouton is unconfortable to sit/sleep on. The day bed was much, much better!

it is spelled futon.........................and they are left over from hitlers bunker underneath berlin and not fit for human use.

Day beds are usually twin sized and you can use any mattress you like. You can get a pop up trundle that would make it a king sized, you would just have to add the correct sized linens each night for that.

I like the idea of a day bed with a trundle to make it a king size. I never thought about that. I am going to have to keep that an option for the new LO's room!

It really depends on the futon. Like mattresses, not all futons are created alike or of the same quality. Here in NYC, where space is minimal, furniture that does double duty is of utmost importance. This place has specialty futon stores. I've had FOUR different futons over the years because I love my convertible futon couch frame.

The first futon was the cheap, all cotton one that I think end up being most people's first futon, (especially college kids) because of the cheap price. It is all cotton and matts down after a couple of years to an incredibly hard rock and becomes uncomfortable. :headache:

As I started to have back issues, my second one was an orthopedic futon, with an inner-spring core. While, it folded up, as futons are meant to. It didn't occur to me to test out this part of the feature in the store. I only tested it for how it would feel for sleeping. As I left the store, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a guy came over to help the sales woman fold the futon back into the "clam shell" futon/couch frame, (same as I have.) It didn't occur to me, until hindsight, that I should have gone back to see why he was helping her. I thought he was just being polite.

No, as it turns out, while the inner-spring makes it great for sleeping on, it turned it into a farce to fold up. it was like an episode of I Love Lucy getting it to fold properly in the frame. A regular futon will lay in any position you fold it. An innerspring futon wants to lay flat, unless held in a folded position. If not in the clam shell frame properly, BOING! It would totally pop out.

 I was doing hand & feet gyrations, like the game Twister, to push the futon in while folding. :upsidedow:):upsidedow It NEEDS two people to close it. Not good if someone is planning on opening & closing it into a couch each day by himself.

I switched out finally to a better grade futon (no innerspring) and have bought a 4" memory foam topper. They do make them combined, but they are way too much money, in my opinion. An added topper works fine. BOTH are foldable & bendable. My frame folds up easily, the way it was intended. I actually like having the extra 4" height. It makes for a much more luxurious & cozy bed & couch. What the memory foam topper did to heal my back problems was incredible. I recommend one whether you're using a futon or a mattress. :thumbsup2

My fourth futon & pad were simply a replacement of the third set. I love this combo. I got them both from www.overstock.com.

I've slept on both - but it really depends on the quality of the mattresses.. If you don't want to spend an awful lot of money, I think the day bed would probably be a better choice..:goodvibes

We have an Istikbal convertible sofabed. Its very firm & comfortable - like a regular mattress that is split and able to fold.
The built-in storage underneath is great for guest sheets, blankets & pillows.

Who would have thought a thread like this would have been Godwinned in only 4 posts?! (I'm going to say it counts, anyway, even if dalt01 wasn't talking about a person. He (or she?) did mention Hitler, after all.)

Anyway, I have a futon. It's the thickest kind available without springs and it is a huge pain to fold back up if you make the mistake of unfolding it. (Like Imzadi's it doesn't want to fold, it wants to stay flat even without the springs.) Fortunately it's in our computer room as a backup guest bed when we have too many people visiting and since that many people rarely visit at once we don't unfold it often. I've napped on it, though, and it is quite comfortable. If it was easier to fold up I'd totally recommend it, but I'm not sure I'd want to have to fight with the thing on a daily basis.

Huh? Where did you get that information from? Do you have a link or anything? Futons are japanese in origin, not German.

Ive had my futon for about 3 years now. I use it as a couch and a bed (most nights). I find it really confortable (except for the one end where my spring is loose). I have the luxury matress (double thick) and its great. I sleep better on it then I do my bed. I do reccomend that if you get a light color matress (foolish me bought tan)that you buy a cover (very cheap at walmart).

It depends on the futon you buy. We bought an oak futon and upgraded the mattress from the one that is standard. Has held up very nicely and is comfortable to sleep on. NO springs, no bar in the middle of your back. Oh, ours is Queen sized and the only complaint I have is that I'm short and if I sit all the way back my feet don't touch the floor LOL

Large decorative pillows will look good and solve that problem. I have a pillow back sofa and had to put extra pillow on it to be able to sit comfortably.

I'm sorry, what?

Learn something new everyday around here.
