DaVinci Code Protesters

There was a scary guy who looked like Slugworth from Willy Wonka in our church parking lot trying to recruit protestors after mass.

This is a great visual--thanks for the laugh! :rotfl2:
Read "DaVinci Code"--thought it was a fairly fun read (although having read other Dan Brown books after, I'm not really impressed with Brown as a writer--overuses same tired formula--anyway...) but have no desire to see the movie. I cannot understand the brouhaha over the movie. Do people really go to the movies and take what they see as fact? Does one movie really have the power to change people's fundamental beliefs?
Yikes--can no one think for him/herself anymore? :sunny:

"Yes, people are going to be led astray by The Da Vinci Code just as they have been led astray by countless other fictions and fabrications of the truth throughout history, but the people who are led astray are the ones who are going to be fooled anyway, if not by this, then by the next thing to come along. These are people, in fact, who move from one thing to another and never alight on the truth precisely because they are not seeking the truth while those who truly are seeking are given the ability to see."

Isn't that exactly what the christian churches and other religions do? Selling fictions and fabrications :confused3

When movies are presented as changes to HISTORICAL TRUTH, yes, there should be disclaimers.

Of course, people who don't understand the bible as Historical Truth wouldn't have a problem with DC being presented as it is.

The bible is historical truth? :rotfl2: Obviously you don't know the definition of the word 'history' :rolleyes2

Isn't that what religion is for? To rid you of the strain to think for yourself!

Well I hear they are going to make Angels and Demons into a film. The Catholic Church isn't gonna like that one either!

IMHO telling people that they are going to hell for enjoying a movie is not very Christian at all.

My idea if the protestors are Catholic: Before you go to the movie, find some stories about pedophile priests on the net, print them out and then hand them to the protestors and say, "You have bigger problems to address!"

What gives these people the right to judge what we watch or believe? :confused3

The only thing their achieving is bringing more attention to the movie. If I knew nothing about the film and saw protesters for it, it would only make me want to see it more.

You think they could find some more productive use of their time. :sad2:

Protest whatever you want to protest. Who cares? Is the problem the protest or the fact that people said that moviegoers were going to hell? Yes the hell was over-the-top, not something I would say, but really in the grand scheme of things who cares. Go enjoy your movie and ignore the rude people.

Yep, that's it. You figured it out. Woo hoo. :thumbsup2

What would those people say if I'd protest in front of their churches, because I don't like what they do there?

BTW, I enjoyed the movie ;)

I can't answer for anyone but myself, but I wouldn't care.

If your beliefs are either built up or destroyed by a summer blockbuster movie (directed by OPIE TAYLOR, ye gods), what kind of belief is THAT in the first place? :stir:

Myself, I'm gonna be crushed if they tell me that Cars really can't talk... :smokin:

And if people don't believe the Historical Truth, they should be killed, right?

Why stop now; it's been going on for centuries.

No one should take away their right to peaceful protest but they should not be allowed to use scare tactics either. Of course using slogans such as these make them look a little whacko anyway.

In regard to the fact vs fiction thing, what is fact to one group of people may be considered fiction to others. Especially in the realm of religion there are so many different opinions it is difficult to tell what is fact and what is fiction.

The nuts with signs were out last weekend and people were being yelled at for seeing DC. But the best part was the kids seeing X3 got the last laugh against the sign wavers.

I see this as one of the problems with the Church and some of its followers. I grew up in a very Catholic family. I went to private school which is where I started to lose interest in the church mainly because of what they taught me concerning my lifestyle ( I happen to be gay.) Some in the church see me as going to Hell not for being gay since God and Jesus teach us to love and accept all, but for participating in "homosexual acts" with my boyfriend. When I watch tv or hear of stories like these protestors who are the first to condemn someone to hell, it makes me less want to continue praciticing my religion. The last time I was at church willfully (besides going for holidays to make my mother happy), there was a letter read by the priest from the Bishop about homosexuality and how those who participate in it, will go to hell. Who'd want to sit for an hour where you're not welcomed?

Now, who knows if these protestors are Catholic. But it just follows in the footsteps with how this country has been heading lately: if you're not one of us, get the hell outta the way. Look at this god awful Federal marriage amendment. Please senators who are supporting this, tell me how my marriage (when I do) will negatively affect yours? How about a ban on divorce? Or a ban on Britney spears' 12 hour drunken nuptial in las vegas? I think there are far more important issues to address in this country than writing discrimination into this Constitution.

I no longer go to church because it has become way too political, but I still consider myself a Catholic because I still believe in the faith and I believe I am going to heaven even though I'm a happy gay man who "participates in homosexual acts." I don't believe for a second Jesus would agree with what the Vatican says.

I'd love to see the skeletons in the closets of those protestors.

whew, off the soapbox! :teeth:

Religion and facts are two completely different things.
Religion used as a moral codex is OK with me, the basic ethics of most religions are more or less similar and thus most obviously generally valid - at least on this planet ;)
But speaking of facts in connection with the bible is utterly ridiculous. This collection of stories has been written centuries after the things they are based on happened. It has been translated so often that most probably not much of its original content is left over anyway.

I agree!

Religion is about faith not fact. If you have so little faith than a movie can cause you to doubt it, maybe you should reconsider what you believe in.

How funny! They need to get a life.

We went on May 19, and they were putting papers on people's cars.

If they did that over here, they would be in big trouble: I'm very tolerant, but anyone touch my car and I go berzerk. It's the only crime I consider worthy of capital punishment :woohoo:

That's the problem - if you are not strong in your faith, this book/movie will make you question everything you've ever read/learned/lived!

Heck, I knew National Treasure (thanks for the analogy!) was not real, but the way it was presented was SO believable!

I think DC is much the same, except people who don't "Know" it's fiction will buy into the story as truth - like I've said, I've already seen it in one of our employees, also an acquaintenance is *rethinking everything about church* because of the book.
