We will be going on a road trip soon to NH, VT and Maine.

Does anyone have any recommendations for lobster shacks around Kittery, Maine?

Also, any good restaurants around Hanover, NH? I am looking for Diners, Drive-ins and Dives-type places. They must exist in a college town.

I can help you with Hanover, NH -

If you are coming to NH via 89 North, get off on exit 18 and go towards Hanover right) on Route 120. At the first set of lights (Heater Rd.) take a right. About 1/4 mile down the road on the right is a truck stop / convenience store / diner called Ft. Lou's. It has great diner food.

Lou's also has a restaurant / bakery on Main St. in Hanover which is yummy.

My favorite place to eat in Hanover is Molly's (get a booth seat in the bar or outside on the back patio). It is also on Main St.

Enjoy your visit.

Thanks everyone! Please keep them coming!

We are taking my neice up to school. She will be starting soon (Dartmouth). We are making a family trip out of it.

I am very excited because I've always wanted to visit these states.

Are the trees starting to change?

I love lobster and can't wait to eat a lobster roll.

A question for you in NH--my neice has to go camping with the school for a number of days. Do you have to worry about bears or moose in the woods? Are mosquitoes still a problem this time of year? What do you recommend she pack? The school's list has shorts on it, but I can't imagine wearing shorts in NH in September. What about long underwear for nights?

(she's coming from a Southern state)

Any tips and advice will be greatly appreciated.

I'm not a fan of the weathervane. Its a chain type restaurant, and I find you can do a lot better in this area. Bob's Clam Hut is okay.

My favorite seafood shack is B.G.'s Boathouse in Portsmouth NH. Portsmouth NH is one town over from Kittery ME. Its right on the water. You can sit outside on the deck if its nice out. They have excellent food. The lunch menu (served until 4pm) is a bargain.

Bob's has been going a bit downhill in recent years. The food just isn't up to the par it used to be. From my understanding the lobster meat is prepackaged, and I have even heard it was frozen. They are usually so busy, and probably go through a ton, that it wouldn't surprise me. They seem to be hit or miss.

The Fishermans Catch up in Wells is real good. Here is their website. http://www.fishermanscatchwells.com/

I have eaten at the Weathervane, but it doesn't fall into the Diners, Drive-ins & Dives catagory. It reminds me more of a chain restaurant.

If you looking for a good buger, then Wild Willys up route 1 in York is the best burger I have had, so far. ;) Fresh made patties, hand cut fries. Big and juicy. Here is their site http://www.wildwillysburgers.com/

Flo's is a true Diner, Drive-in & Dive restaurant. Steamed hotdogs that are incredible with their homemade relish. They have been written about in alot of magazines.

Hope you have a good trip!!

I just thought of another of our favorite stops in that area
the Ice House in NH, along A1A new castle area I think, its kind of hard to find but well worth it.
also for seafood in NH on the beach in Rye is Peteys. very good and worth the trip

September weather in Hanover can be almost anything. Typical fall weather is high 40's at night, 70's during the day. She needs to be prepared for hot and cold. Does she have a warm sleeping bag?

Trees start to change in September, but you don't get peak color until early to mid October (think Columbus Day) in this region.

There are bears and moose in the woods, but I am sure the camping trip will be so noisy, she won't need to worry about seeing them. They will want to keep their food locked up so as to not attract bears, racoons or skunks to their campsite. We have seen a moose in Hanover before.

There are still mosquitos this time of year. I got bitten last night.

Hope she enjoys Dartmouth!

Moose can be seen in NH, but they are trying to avoid people, not go after them. As said, biggest concern with bears is keeping food away, hopefully can assume the school knows how to do this. (She shouldn't keep extra food in her tent.) Mosquitos, yes (though they drop as the temps do...), she should get some good deet spray before she heads out.

Clothing- Totally depends where in NH they will be camping and how the weather plays out. "Heat wave" in southern NH can be 90, cold spell in the mountains can be below freezing. (And if you don't like the weather, wait a minute.... :)) She should have stuff she can wear in layers and wool, fleece, polypropelene- generally anything NOT cotton is the way to go. A fleece gets wet, she's still warm. A cotton sweatshirt gets wet, not so cozy.

Good sleeping bag (20 degree or below), or a lighter one with an extra layer to wear for sleeping. If they are sleeping on the ground, a ground pad (even an inexpensive egg crate sort) will keep her warmer than being on the bare ground.

Thanks for the tips, I will pass them on.

We have a sleeping bag that she can use. I'll see if we can get her a thermal blanket to put under it. We have a big Dick's here so we will stop there before we take her up to NH. We will also be stopping in LL Bean in Maine.

I am a lobster shack expert. I spent the last two summers searching for the perfect one and the one that I find the best for ambiance as well as food is on Kittery Point. It is actually on the water. You buy lobsters etc but you can also bring in pretty much anything else you want like wine, or dessert.

Bob's is in the middle of the outlet stores and so is Weathervane both of which are really not the experience I think you are looking for. IMHO Newicks has gone down hill over the years too! It is merely a shadow of its former self and not a shack but a mediocore restaurant at best. They closed the Seabrook location so I think that about says it all.

If you wanted to go up to Portland way then Two Lights in So Portland on Cape Elizabeth is fantastic. It is worth it just for the view. Breathtaking does not even come close to describing it.

In Kennebunkport there is Porposie Cove shack where you can see them unload the lobster boats and there is water on both sides.

Finally there is the Harriskeet Lunch which is a lobster pound near Freeport. Here too you are right on the water with tons of boats and a long dock you can travel down after you eat.

My MIL just went to Petey's a week ago and took three other guests. She lives in Rye and had heard it was good. She was extremely disappointed and the bill was very high.
