For the first time I am putting a congratulation "ad" in my youngest daughters dance recital program. I wanted to also have photos of her in her current dance costumes. So yesterday afternoon we had about 2 hours to work on them - then my sync cord for my Alien Bees was not working right. :scared: I had to mess with that for a while and actually tape it into one position to have it work.

Anyway - here are the shots I got - warning - there are quite a few of them.

Ballet -

Jazz (only got one I really liked with this costume. She was in a rush to finish - "places to go, people to see Mom" )

And finally - Hip Hop-

Great shots Jen! The first ballet one is awesome! You are certainly getting SO much better at the portrait thing! I hope I can do half as well when I finally dive into it.

As for the two hip hop ones you questioned, I like the first one the best. You can see her face better in that one.

Where the heck does all her hair go when she is in Jazz mode? :lmao: I can't imagine it is that easy to get all that hair up into that little bun!

Also, what do you haveto pay her to pose for you like this? My DD won't sit for one shot, nevermind a whole bunch in different costumes!

Again, great job! :worship:

They are all beautiful shots Jennifer! I'm also considering dipping into the world of shooting portraits.

I love the first ballet pose and I actually like that first hip-hop shot the best. There's something about the look on her face that really makes it. On those next 2, any idea what the 4 fingers means, if anything? I'd like to know so I can flash it to my 14.5 year old son so he might think I'm cool and down with it. :hippie:

Thanks Andy.

LOL - I had to laugh when I read your question about her hair. The amount of hair isn'tthe issue - the fact that it is really layered is what makes it a nightmare. It is pulled back, banded, braided, pinned, sprayed to a stiffness that a hurricane couldn't damage and then for added protection - sprayed once again. ;)

I am really lucky with her - she actually LIKES to have her photo taken (although she rarely admits it). It is her older sister I have to bribe.

Danny - the four fingers is actually part of her hip hop routine. There is a small section where they countdown 4-3-2-1 and then the music changes - so that is where that pose came from.

I agree with you. I like the first standing hip hop pose the best as well.

Last week they had their second dance competition and the girls got a judges award for that routine - the "Hip Hop Hotties" award. :lmao: We all had a good laugh about that one... and then I saw the looks of concern and worry flash across the Dads faces. ;)

Fantastic pictures!! I love the first one and of the three hip-hop pictures I think I like the first one the best.

great shots.

you considered going wireless for your alienbees? saves the hassle with the sync cord.

OMG, Jennifer. Your photos are rocking!! (or hip hopping...whichever is better now days.) I like the standing hip hop pose best. You are doing a great job at high key. I'm afraid to even try.

if the cord is a standard, socket there is a tool you can get that rounds them out to the right size so they fit better

I actually have like 4 more - they were still in the plastic packaging they came in with my alien bees. I know - I know. It was one of THOSE days.
:confused3 :rolleyes1

Wow and thanks for sharing. May I ask a question or advice?

My daughter will have her second dance recital in about a month. What should I be thinking about to get reasonable stage shots? There is little I can do to control where I will be seated, but I suspect it will not be terribly far from the stage.

As I am so new to this nothing will be wonderful, so I am going for something better than hopeless.

I shoot w/an Oly e-510 and hope to have a 50-200mm 2.8 by then.

Thank you again for sharing your work.

I struggle with that too - and could use some advice as well. ;) The thing that I have found works best for me (wish I could do this at competitions) is get your seat early and sit as close to the stage as possible. Set your ISO pretty high and shoot in shutter priority - at as fast of a shutter speed as you can - to stop the action.

I may not be doing it right - like I said *I* struggle with that low lighting too.

Maybe someone else will chime in and give us both a tip to help. :goodvibes
