Dan Murphy, what are you doing???

I pm Dan and talked to him and he was trying to make a point that a few years ago the DIS was a fun place where everybody chitchatted and stuff and now there are all sorts of groups and fighting going on that he got tired of it all and that is why I think he did what he did today, to try to bring us all back together like they were in the past.
I think what he did may have the opposite effect. People are disagreeing about the different types of threads on the CB.

The threads on the CB are pretty much just a bunch of "clique" threads now. I don't know what he was doing, but they look just like the ones I am seeing now that are MANY pages long. Maybe he was making a point? :confused3

There are lots of different types of threads on the CB. I don't comment about the game threads just because I don't play them. I don't mention the exchanges just because I don't participate. Those things are there for anyone who wants to participate, lurk, or post. The clique threads serve the same purpose and I believe that he even has a clique thread about DIS old-timers. Nothing wrong with that. There's something for everyone.

Yes, the CB is fast moving and things end up on the second page quickly. That's why there's a page 2 to click on...and a page 3. Maybe the board could be broken down into 2 boards and I'm sure it's something that's been considered. If that happens, fine. If not, fine.

The CB is a wonderful place! I think that those who have lost sight of that need to take a break--either a long break or at least a nap.

What you guys are saying makes sense. I did think that was odd of Dan to do that. I shoudl have known he was trying to make a point.

I do start/participate in the fluff threads. :guilty: Sorry, if I have made anyone feel bad. I know what you mean though, sometimes I have tried to join a thread and have been ignored.

What kinds of posts do you wish were on the CBs?

...and I suspect that Dan has made his point because look at all the reactions from people who know what a good person he truly is.

In all honesty, I scroll the list before opening any threads - many names come up that I know to be confrontational - I don't choose to get involved, life offers us enough decisions to make. I come on to the boards to read, be entertained, and be informed...
Well, as a pretty new poster, I am not aware of the really confrontational posters but am learning too quickly. It's kind of sad because when I first started reading this board, it seemed like such a happy place to be.

You have nothing to be sorry for! It's people that make the CB--all of us. New posters, old posters, young, old. That's what makes it a fun place. It's kind of like my mother talking about the "good ole days" and now the moms of today again talking about the good ole days. These are the good ole days, folks! Always has been!

It is a happy place to be, if you learn which posters to avoid and which topics to avoid. You do as time goes on. I like to have fun here and do not like to argue or debate, so over time I have learned which threads to avoid. I try to stay in my happy place most of the time, but of course there are always those few that don't want us to have our happy places.

I'll agree that the CB is cluttered as of late, but posting more clutter is not the way to solve it.

He was trying to prove a point..

I agree with you Silly Me - there are still many fine posters on the board - they do seemed to get drowned out by some of the more vocal ones, but we can make the choice to join them or ignore them!! :thumbsup2

Didn't there used to be a rule about threads not being personal messages to people? When there's a thread telling someone to clean out their PM box lasting for over 6,000 posts I guess not.

LOL, true, but it's hard to PM someone telling them to clean out their PM box, isn't it? :lmao: And then that thread took off. And then that thread became a thread of fun and not a personal thread--you're welcome to stop by and say hi--we're a friendly bunch.

But other threads with a poster asking about another poster as opposed to just PMing or e-mailing them used to not be allowed, but I've seen a couple of those lately.

Sure, but when half the CB is filled with threads like this, you miss interesting threads that end up on page 3 within 30 minutes.

::yes:: I cant believe that one is still open.. Makes no sense.. Many other threads have been closed for being offtopic.. yet this one still lives on.. :confused3 makes no sense to me.. Guess it depends on who's seeing it?

I think you are kind of missing the point. It isn't that people don't feel that they can't post on the threads. It is that the threads are targeted to a small group of people who enjoy that kind of stuff and they are very extraneous to the rest of us.

....and they have gotten to the point where they are quickly dumping any "non-cliquey, don't want to cyber-drink, really don't want to play games, and couldn't care less if the Tag Fairy Tags me or if some lady whom I've never heard of gets to post a Trip report anywhere ever again" topic to the 2nd and 3rd pages before most of the rest of us get a chance to see them or participate.

Thank you.

I don't know how many times I've seen a thread I'd like to respond to. I get called away from the computer for whatever the reason (letting the dog out, making lunch or dinner) and by the time I return, I have to hunt for the thread because it's long gone from page 1.

Regarding jumping in and feeling welcome on certain threads, been there done that. I find myself caught in the middle of two or three people having a personal conversation between them that has nothing to do with the original thread topic. :confused3

I remember that too. I guess it's okay to do it now. :confused3

I'm pretty new to the CB - stumbled in here after following a link. I truly had never scrolled down that far in the list...

As any community has... there are neighborhoods, of sorts. Congrats on the group that just celebrated your 2 year anniversary of posting and getting to be such good friends. Good for you! What a great neighborhood and support system you have created. Do I read your posts? No, not until today when all the hoopla over someone feeling they were insulted over their tag.

What I found was a thread with over 2300 pages and some really good friends that have found a way to stay close. I wouldn't dream of posting there, but that doesn't mean that I think it shouldn't exist!

I wondered why someone always had to worry about clearing their PM's... but again, found a group of people that have created a neighborhood. Good for them too! It's what being a community is all about.

If I felt I had enough in common with the posters in either of those threads, I would join.

Perhaps, someday I might. For right now, I'm still feeling my way around and find it most comfortable (for me) to post in my cruise meets thread and get to know the people I'm actually going to meet face to face in another 480 days or so.

So, Dan... I appreciate what I think you were attempting to do. I, for one, enjoy the CB and have done my best to stay where I am comfortable and input when I feel I can bring value or an opinion to the table or start a thread that I think might be a fun question to ask or need opinions.

Vive la difference and let's move on past today! :grouphug:

I mostly lurk but do post as is evident by my count. I always thought that if a thread didn't interest you to just skip it. I know I am usually out of the loop but I have to say there aren't cliques here like I have seen on other boards. Most are very friendly. :confused3 Maybe I am missing more than I thought. HMMM.
Nope, I think you gave a very good reading! :thumbsup2

I found this out too, and if you aren't in their morning shout-outs, it sort of means stay out. Plus if you do make a comment, you are either a troll, or a stir potter-or you better have a link or know someone so they can vouch for you. I learned to stop going in their threads.
I know that on any of the threads that I post on, including the Tigger&Belle thread, we welcome newbies--you don't have to be on the thread from the beginning and are welcome to stop in and say hi or stay. We're a friendly bunch and have had people join us. We jokingly call ourselves a clique, but I know that I'm the most uncliquey person ever. The way to get to know people is to join it. Of course you'll join in on some threads and get a lukewarm reaction--just the way it is on discussion boards sometimes, but try again.

While that is often the case - putting a certain someone on ignore in this case allowed him to get so out of hand that a thread I really cared about was removed.

I don't think just ignoring problem behavior always works. I don't know what would have. :confused3 Contacting the moderators before there was a severe enough problem that they would really care??

There is no off topic on the community board... Yes, on other boards there's an off-topic, but here? That's the point. How can chatting be off-topic? If you are at a dinner party and are talking about a certain subject and the conversation veers to a different subject, does that bother you?

And isn't it better to have that chatting on a few threads as opposed to all over a bunch of different threads?

Sure was but even way back then it was only used against some and not others. On the same day you would see one poster doing it and no problem but yet another poster would do it and get their hand slapped.

As a semo new poster I have to admit all the games threads annoy me. Sometimes they take up half of the forum. Just an opinion FWIW.

To answer the Op's question: What are you doing Dan Murphy?

Probably sleeping about now!!
