There might be a possibility in the future of DH relocating to the Dallas area. I know NOTHING about best places to live, schools, etc. Would be willling to travel within 1/2 hr to 45 min outside of Dallas...any suggestions on where to live? Just wanted to get a general idea in case this does come up. Thanks!

Lots of people from DFW here. I just back to Missouri after living for 3yrs in Flower Mound.:thumbsup2

As far as "traveling" in DFW, just throw all of that out the window. DFW is so congested with people that it takes forever to go anywhere. You measure location to location in time and not miles.

An hour commute is standard.

Somebody will probably chime in with more info.

I don't know a lot about the areas but I would say north of Dallas...McKinney and Frisco...great schools.

East of Dallas...Rockwall. But I'd start by looking at the north first.

You must not have seen I'm from the Chicago area. Traffic is an everyday occcurance for me! :rotfl2:

McKinney is a bit too far for a Dallas commute. Frisco is doable. We were in Flower Mound in which I could get downtown in 30/45 mins in the HOA lane, on a good day.

Will your DH be in the heart of Dallas or in outlying areas? Have to get specific with the address and city he will be in to figure your best location.

DH works in Irving right now and it takes him at LEAST an hour to get there/back again.

I saw that. Do you measure in miles or minutes to get to place to place?

Definitely minutes. Right now, he works about 25 miles from home...but some days it takes him 45 minutes to get home...other days an hour and a half!!!!

Not quite sure where the new office is located, I'd have to find that out.

Park Cities is probably the best school district. Highland Park and University Park are two small towns totally surrounded by Dallas (just a few miles north of downtown), and they have a unified school district that is just fabulous.

They are great places to live. Very convenient and very safe - they even have their own police departments. But homes are VERY expensive.

Plano, Frisco, and Flower Mound are good.

Best advice I could give you though is to pick something close to work.

I lived in University Park but worked in Plano. The commute was HIDEOUS!! And I had lived in Houston. When I moved to Northern California I ended up living about 2 miles from work - I could not believe the improvement in my quality of life.

DFW is the same. Traffic all the time.

So what I would say is look for the best school/burb match and don't worry about the miles.

The popular growing areas north are Frisco, Highland Village, Flower Mound.

However they are also very competitive. For example, my dd who went to Flower Mound HS was 45% class rank with a 3.7 GPA.

Oh and this is an issue because the top 10% of kids in HS get automatic admission to a TX university.

Not sure your situation with your kids however something to think about that I didn't understand when I moved there.

We live in what is called the Mid Cities, about half way between DAL and FTW, about 12 miles from DFW airport. Home prices are less, and we have access to both big cities but not the congetion.

Check this area out, we relocated here and love the community!
Close to Flower Mound & Highland Village. We are impressed with schools.
Good 45min commute though depending on what part of Dallas. Good luck! :)

In Lewisville, right next to Flower Mound, same school district. I drive to almost downtown dallas daily on 35E, if I take the HOV lane, I'm about 35-45 minutes, if I don't then it is about an hour. The return trip home is worse than driving into the office though. I go in around 8am and head home at 5 to give you an idea.

Okay, just found out office is in Irving. Does that make a difference?

Also...what about property taxes? I heard they are high...

I live in north Richland hills/ Keller area. We are some 20 minutes from Irving... Schools in Keller are great!. I wouldnt live in Frisco if you PAID me but thats because i know the traffic is bad there! I think someone else stated they lived in mid cities.. Great place to live.. anywhere you go in this metroplex is going to be high with higher house prices and property taxes closer to Dallas. Appx taxes for our area are 6000/ year! :scared1:
Let me know if i can help more

I came here and asked that very same question three years ago and was given those standard answers...Flower Mound, Frisco, McKinney...etc.

And there are lots of nice places up in that area to live. We live in Heath (Rockwall area) and love it here. It's a very family-oriented area.

Property taxes are high in Texas but there is no state income tax. I grew up in Richardson but I live near Houston now. Sorry I can't help.

Come join us in the Grapevine - Colleyville ISD. Homes in Grapevine are quite affordable.
Southlake Caroll is a good school system, but homes are pricey.
Also good:

Keller
Flower Mound
Coppell

From Irving, look West and North.

Before you sign on the dotted line anywhere, make sure you know what school distict you're in. When you get around Lewisville, Carrollton, even parts of Irving, you aren't necessarily in the district you'd think.

A good rule of thumb is that you property taxes will be anywhere from 2.6 to 3.1% of the assessed value of your house. So a $200,000 house would mean around $6,000 a year in taxes. I don't live in the Dallas area but have liflong friends that live in Rockwall, east of Dallas. We love that area but it would probably be a pretty big commute to Irving. Our DD goes to school in Denton so we are in the Dallas area often.
