Daisy Girl Scout Leaders

I'm excited to find this thread! I realized at the parent interest meeting this fall that the only way my daughter was going to get into a Daisy troop was by volunteering as a leader.

I was VERY lucky to get into an existing troop. Two moms took over the troop, so all three of us are new leaders. We have 15 girls, all first graders, 10 are second year, DD and 4 others are new.

The previous leaders apparently were not very efficient, they were college students and had too many obligations. The girls only earned two petals the first year, so it was easy for the new girls to catch up.

So far the new girls have earned the two petals from last year, and all the girls have earned three more. We're doing the 6th petal on tuesday and plan to have all of them in the next couple of months.

In this area they don't mix ages, they try to keep all the girls together so they move up through the program together.

One of the leaders is a teacher and we are able to use her classroom. I'm not sure yet if this is a great fit of us or going to end up being a big problem. DD is the only homeschooled girl in the troop. All 14 other girls attend the school and come from their classroom to the meeting.

So far the only issue DD has had is that she didn't have a backpack and all the other girls do. That was easy to take care of, she has a brand new Daisy blue backpack to bring to the next meeting. She's outgoing and self assured enough that she shouldn't have a problem fitting in. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that she doesn't want to go to school. (We don't live in that school district.)

This girl scout community has about 7-8 events per year, and the council has many more. our troop meets every other week from October until May. The school doesn't allow groups to use the school the first and last month of school. So far outside of our meetings we've attended a Halloween party, and gone caroling at a senior home with our community. (about 100 girls) They also marched in a Holiday parade but we opted not to attend. (cold and at night and very crowded)

Now we're gearing up for Thinking Day and Cookie sales. We have avoided the Journeys since we have heard nothing good about them. We also didn't buy books. They were not pushed at training.

To camp here you need two training sessions and they aren't offered locally. I'm not sure when we'll be able to get someone trained.

I look forward to following along with everyone!

Karen

welcome Karen!

We just got an announcement today that next year there will for four (4) more petals, in the shape of leaves, that Daisies can earn. Two are for financial learning and two are for cookie sales.

I haven't seen a picture of them yet but will try to post if I find it. I think this is really a cute idea! I assume they are doing two -- one for each year of Daisies. Since we'll be in our 2nd year in the fall, then we'll just earn one set of the leaves.

They also said that the new patches going forward will all be called "badges" (i.e., no more try-its, etc) and they will maintain their 6 various shapes.

The older Journeys will start to be phased out very soon. One can still start them for a few more weeks but then GS only wants people to finish them and wait to start new in the fall.

There will also be another book we need to purchase (both girls and leaders buy the same book) called "Girls Guide book to Girl Scouting" or something like that. It will be available Fall 2011...no price yet.

We'll find out more info at our SU meeting on Tuesday. I'll share anything else I find out.

Did you find out anything? I tried to look online and could not find out anything about the new petals or the journeys. I know that the new journey three cheers for animals (or something like that) is out. Are they getting rid of the garden journey and earth and sky? We just had a council meeting and no one said anything about this. Thanks.

We can start selling cookies next Friday!!! We have a cookie kick off party next week and get to sample the cookies.:flower1: We are excited and are going to sign up for booth sales. They told us it is first come first serve and it starts at 6am. All I could think is what am I booking a cookie booth or CRT? I have to get up on my date to make sure I get the best "reservation" lol. We are looking for inside ones, since it is so cold here. Yes, the stores make you stand outside in the cold. We only have 6 kinds of cookies this year and they are $3.50. How many do you guys have? DD ONLY needs 135 boxes for the elephant.:flower1:(dd likes the flowers)

Yikes!! They are phasing them out to fast. I am so against the Journeys but if they are out there you should have options. My Juniors are working on Breath and the Amaze Journeys. They did not want to do the newer one. The only reason we are doing the Journeys is because now it is a requirement for the silver. We did a tour last year of the distribution center that supplies everything to council shop and online sales and journey books are not a great seller. My daisies are 2nd year and we are done with the petals. I am debating if we are even going to do one of the Journey books. January and February are filled up with cookie sales and World Thinking Day.

Yeah, all of the books are being redone and renamed Some try-badges and IP's are being discontinued. Very pissed since we all bought the IP books in June.

Hi, I believe that was a mistyped or misunderstood statement about the journeys. The Journey books are NOT being phased out. The older Handbooks and Badge books, activity books and such are being phased out. So, yes, there are books that are being discontinued, but NOT the Journey books.

Our cookie sales start next Friday. Tonight we are having a Cookie Rally where the girls will have activities and cookie tastings to get them excited about the cookie sales. This is put on by the Service Unit. I'm looking forward to it. We have 8 kinds of cookies that we are selling. And our incentives are different, too. We don't have an elephant. There is a Kangaroo, but you need to sell 300 boxes to get it. They have badges, shirts, mugs and stuff like that for less than 300 boxes. I'm not that impressed with the incentives.

We are not doing booth sales. Since this is our 1st year, I'm keeping it simple and we are only doing pre-orders. I was told that in our council (may be different in other areas) that Daisies are not allowed to do booth sales except at your school or place of worship. I just don't want to be bothered with it this year, especially since the girls are so young.

Thanks.

Kelly

yeah outside booth sales this time of year are cold. We have been doing i in front of the grocery store for 6 years now. I booked my date back in December. Our council now does them online and council employees go out and secure locations. The online locations haven't opened up yet. I am hoping to find an indoor one but that's very rare. Our booth sale dates are between 3/5 and 3/27. If you wait till the end of the month it may be warmer but by that everyone has been dealing with scouts in front of the stores every weekend for 3 weeks. I booked the 5th.

We are $4.00 a box. It went up last year when we went back to Little Brownie Baker. 8 cookies and thankfully no stuff animals in the prize levels. I will share ours since it is interesting to see what others get:

We want to get out there early so hopefully we will have a better shot at selling more. Then we will see what else we can get. We are looking at all the inside ones lol.
It is interesting to see the different prizes that everyone is being offered. We are little brownie bakers also. We do not sell the thank you bery much or duche de leche. I think we make .75 a box, but may be wrong, it could be less.

We aren't selling Dulce de Leche and Thank You Berry Much this year. They said we were one of the test markets of only selling 6 cookies.

Our older girls have the option of not receiving incentives and making a bigger profit on cases sold but since I don't have older girls I didn't pay attention to the dollar amount

Just had our second meeting today. I had some moms help me out, since my co-leader had to work. We took over a Daisy troop after our leader stepped down, and only one petal had been earned.

Today we had a junior troop come in and work with the scouts and doing role-playing. The topic was bullying, and we had a great discussion after the activity. Before the activity, I read Have You Filled A Bucket Today?, which is a book about self-esteem. I think the activity went pretty well.

We're not selling cookies, since we didn't get a chance to go to the cookie meetings, and the former leader thought we had $500 in our account (we thought we could get by). Unfortunately after going to the bank recently, we learned we only have $240, quite a disappointment.

Our next activity will be to meet at the Rock Climbing Wall, and the girls will earn their courageous and strong petal. We have alot of petals to earn, and we plan to bridge to brownies in May!

Meanwhile, my older daughter who is a junior scout, is selling cookies. She has the new Cranberry Munch and Dulce Le Leche too. It's so cute hearing her on the phone and saying Dulce Le Leche with a little accent :)

For those who were interested in having you or your girls do a Daisy Doll mascot, here is what my co-leader did.

"I used the rag doll tutorial and adapted the Molly monkey pattern to make the Daisy doll. Here is the link:
http://mmmcrafts.blogspot.com/2008/07/drum-roll-pleasemolly-monkey-pattern.html

I drew her face with fabric markers and made the petals with felt.

Here is what she looked like -- notice the Daisy petals around her head! My DD decided she needed to dress like Minnie (since we were in WDW)

My co-leader made one doll and each girl gets to take her home for 2 weeks and then we trade off. In a few weeks, each girl is going to make their own doll and we'll give them to the girls at the end of the year.

This sounds like a similar situation that was going on with a brownie troop here. They have a new leader and are having a great time now. I am sure the girls and the parents appreciate you taking over. Are your daisies in first grade? I know we were told we could not do the rock wall yet. :sad2: When do your cookie sales start? If they have not started yet contact your cookie manager to see if you can get in on the sales. That is what I did for nuts and just made our goal really low since we started selling after the rest of the troops.

We got three cookie booths, so far. We can sign up for three more tomorrow, if we want. Most of the good locations are gone. There is nothing left at our local mall, but luckly we got it on the first weekend that booth sales start. We got all inside ones. We want to be inside since you knever know about the crazy Ohio weather.

By the way my DD has the same Minnie dress as the PP. She wore it to the halloween party and to Chef Mickey's. Did you make her bows? They are cute. The daisy doll looks so cute as minnie, too.

I'm not a leader, but my girl is in Daisies (she's a kindergartner). Anyway, we had to pay $84 today for cookies and got 24 boxes to sell in different varieties (Is this upfront purchasing normal?). Also, are these the cookies we will sell at our booth? Or will we sell additional cookies? I just don't want to be stuck with tons of cookies, since I've already had to pay for them... not sure how I feel about going door to door, so if anyone could offer suggestions, I'd appreciate it. As a newby mom, it's hard to get the right info. Maybe I will try calling to cookie mom tomorrow...

No, I didn't make her bows -- they are Gymboree!

Wow...I'm curious how others are doing this too. I guess paying for the cookies upfront encourages you to sell them!

I would definitely call the cookie mom and find out exactly what you have to do. I never heard of this, but I can understand the leader wanting to do this so that she isn't stuck with cookies. Are you doing a booth sale? Find out if you need to bring these cookies or if they are supplying more.

We are doing pre-orders - We start tomorrow - the girls get an order form and have about 2 weeks to get orders before I place the initial order. They can continue to sell, but I need to place the initial order and then cookies will be delivered a few weeks later. We do not collect money until we deliver the cookies. When the cookies are handed to the parent - they will get a receipt and they will be responsible for paying for whatever cookies they take. At that time, they will go back to the people who they took orders from and give them their cookies and collect their money. They will have to turn all money into me by a certain date.

I do think things may be done differently in different parts of the country, so you will want to ask and find out exactly how it is done in your area.

This is my first cookie sale, so it should be interesting.

Kelly:)

I've been following this thread for a few weeks and thought I would say hi, I am new to Girl scouts, and a co-leader, luckily my co-leader was a girlscout herself, so she kind of knows the ropes :)
It's interesting to read all of the different ways troops are run! In our area, the girls are seperated by grade/age we have 9 kindergarten age Daisies in our group, we meet once a month for about an hour from 6:30pm-7:30pm

In November we did Wreath Sales, and I was the Wreath Mom, and we just placed our initial cookie order, and our cookies arive on the 31st and we start selling on February 5th!!

We did not buy the Journey books, because we just didnt think that they were something we would get our enough use out of for the cost. We gave the girls the option of either getting the Daisy blue smock or quilted backpacks to keep their petals on, and they girls voted for the backpack's which they all love. We have earned two petals so far :)

Yikes!! No I have never heard of that. Although 24 boxes would be no problem to sell at all you may not have the type someone wants.

We do pre-sales here that last for 3 weeks. Pre-sales ends 1/30/11 and the cookies come in 4-5 weeks later.

What I personally do to get my girls numbers up is I will order extra boxes to have on hand.. this year we are going to go do to door with product in hand. We are actually encouraged to do that as a troop. Kind of like a moving booth sale.

Also we are allowed to get extra cookies up untill the end of march so I always go back for more a few times. All of this and booth sales count towards the girls totals.
