Daisy Girl Scout Leaders

Hi everyone! I'm a Brownie leader of 17 girls and we're knee deep into cookie season and SNOW!! We had to cancel our last meeting due to snow conditions and might have to cancel our next meeting! :sob: Very sad! This week we were suppose to do a Chinese New Year celebration! Dumplings, lanterns, firecrackers - praying the snow will be done and we'll be able to have our meeting!!

I'm also hoping we won't have to cancel anymore meetings because we're doing camp planning for our lodge trip in April.

Sorry you had to cancel -- we postponed our PJ/Game night for the blue petal to this coming Wednesday b/c of snow, too. I really didn't want to cancel b/c the girls were sooo oexcited about it, so I was happy the moms were able to meet on one of our "off" weeks.

To the person who asked about cookie booths - I had the same question. I ended up ordering an extra case of each cookie (2 of Thin MInts). I don't think it's going to be enough, but I definitely didn't want to have too much. Our first cookie booth is in 2 weeks.

Is everyone working on Journeys? Or can we just focus on the petals? What books do you have/use? I feel like I'm missing something. I only have 2 books - the Daisy Activity book and one of the Journey books. The Journeys confuse me a little and the petals seem so much simpler (and in a way, more fun!).

I'm starting so late in the game and still feel so lost. Sorry for all of my questions.

I've been doing the petals. We are going to do the Flower Garden Journey ~ but I am thinking we will work on that towards the end of the year when it is spring time and we can plant some flowers!!

We are really just trying to have fun with it!!

How many cookies did everyone sell? Our troop is up to 700 boxes with two more girls left to turn in.

Is everyone working on Journeys?
No, not everyone. We are just doing the petals and the Daisy Activity Book this year. We are saving 2-3 petals for next year and may add a Journey book and then we'll sell cookies for the first time next year ... or we may just concentrate on bridging to Brownies for the 2nd half of the year. I still have to figure out what all "bridging" involves.

It 's definitely up to you as the leader(s) what books, if any, you want to do. We only meet for 1 hour, twice a month so I find that we really don't have much more time than that after doing our Girl Scout Promise, welcome songs, another song/game, treasure hunt, and the daisy activity books it's already 20 minutes. So we use the last 35 minutes to work on our petals or a special project. I honestly don't know how we could fit in the Journey books, but they do look like fun.

I've enjoyed reading and seeing what you are all doing. I hope you don't mind if I join in!

I am leader of 10 1st grade Daisies in north GA. This is our second year all together as a troop so we are finishing up our petals and our second journey. I am also co-leader for my 3rd grader's Brownie troop.

We are in the middle of cookie season. Pre-orders are in and we are getting ready for booths. I ordered almost 400 boxes of cookies for our booth sales based on last years' experience. We generally sold 100 boxes of cookies during a 3 hour booth in front of a grocery store or WalMart. We have 3 booths the first weekend and 9-10 before the end. We can go get more cookies, too, but we can't return any we take.

What kind of goal did your girls set for cookie money? My girls set a goal of 3000 to go do a spend the night at the zoo trip, plus all next years activites and pay for their new Brownie vests in the fall.

I'm looking forward to learning what everyone else is doing this year! Are any of you going to be bridging to Brownies?

Patty

Hmmm I wasn't planning on doing any booth sales for the girls since they are so little. It sounds like a lot of you will be!

Maybe I need to reconsider!

3000 boxes of cookies??? Oh my! That is a lot!!

Our girls are not allowed to do overnights until they are Brownies.

We can't do overnights as Daisies, either, per GS. We aren't going to take the trip until we bridge to Brownies at the end of the school year in May so it will be ok.

The rules seem to be SO different from council to council you just never know!

I know my girls would love an overnight!

We just placed our pre-order last week and we've sold 1152 boxes and our goal is 1200, so we're nearly there! I'm sure with booth sales, we'll surpass our goal.

When you ordered the 400 boxes for cookie booths did you divide them up over your 10 girls or how did you do that? I want to order ahead for our first 2 booths, then get the rest from the cookie cubbard. My leader wants to order a bunch upfront. I want to order around 200 (30 from each girl). The main reason I do not want to order them all upfront is because I want the girls who actually show up to work the booths to get the credit, which she agrees with. Why should someone get the credit that may not show up? Some girls will work 4 booths and some 1. I want it to be fair to all of the girls. The same with us, we cannot return the cookies we take from the cookie cubbard, but can use them for gift of caring, which helps.

We also want to go to the zoo with our cookie money. We cannot stay overnight :sad1: Our girls would live a sleepover. We may do build a bear or bowling, also. We are going to give the girls choices and prices and let them vot to see what they would like to do. Part of it will go to an all day council event in May.

I really like your idea of buying the girls the brownie vests with the cookie money. I might steel this idea for next year.

Our goal after booths is 1400. If we sell an average of 200 per girl they get a t shirt. Pre orders end next week. I think we are around 700 now. Good Luck to everyone.

What I do is divide the amount of cookies sold during a booth sale by the amount of girls who show up. Than
I add that to their overall selling total. If you dont show up you dont get credit.

My initial goal was 100 boxes per girl. This way we get the max $.70 per box. I had some girls sell much less and we only have 6 girls.

I wont blow all the cookie money on one trip.. I like to carry over to get us until next year. I am going to cover part of their brownie vest when they bridge in June. I normally cover half of vests and books but since the books are being redone I am holding off on them until the fall.

We are only allowed 2 booth sales. At first I was going to order a bunch extra for my daughter to walk around to sell but honestly.. it get frustratiing to end up selling over 200 boxes when someone sells 25. Between both of my daughters they sold almost 300 boxes (100 were donations) but I am giving 125 to my daisy and the rest to my Cadette troop

I'm not sure how everyone does it, but on our order we have a line for "booth sales" that the troop commits to pay for, but are not assigned directly to any girl. Then, I can move those boxes into a particular girl's column after the booth sale. I don't make booth sales mandatory, but have a 1st come 1st serve kind of sign up. So, if Elizabeth wants 3 booths and signs up first, she can have all 3. When Maggie signs up last, she might not get her first choice, but she can still have a booth slot.

And yes, they only get credit when they are there. I have girls with personal goals of 899, 600, and 1000 and they have already put in for multiple booth slots to reach those goals. So, when we have a booth sale, I divide the number of boxes by the number of girls who sold those boxes.

I think you'll make your 1400 goal if you are already halfway before booth sales. Just get out there and smile! People can't resist our little girls!

Only 2 booths?! Wow! My troop has 8 scheduled already and we may pick up 2 more. We can only have 4 girls at a booth sale so that would be hard with only 2 booths.

Why does it bother your when your girls sell most of the cookies? (And I'm not being snarky...I really want to understand.) Are your prizes not very good? My girls like to work hard for the personal reward as well as the money to their troop for the group reward. My older dd completely carries her troop and we all know it but it doesn't really bother me. It used to be that the leader's daughter sold lots, too, but the leader felt the way you do and quit pushing.

As example, my dds each want to sell 1000 boxes. (No, I have NO idea how we'll do it!) As a prize, they can each get, an iPod Touch or a Nintendo DSi, or a Flip Ultra camcorder, or a portable DVD player, or a bunch of little stuff, AND a day long event for girls who sell more than 500 boxes AND a 2 day trip to Wild Adventures theme park (an amusement park about 5 hours drive from here). If they choose to not get the "stuff" prizes, they can get $200+ to spend at the G.S. store or on camp.

Plus, my girls love to see the reaction when they tell people that together they sold x number of boxes of cookies.

Does anyone know if we can take them on a camping trip if a mom comes with? I.E. a mom and me camping trip?

You would have to check with your local rules, as all of us have different rules/regulations when it comes to camping :) I would think a mom and me camp would be ok, but you might want to check to be sure!

I'll have to check... pretty sure that it is okay.

We just got an email that we can sign up for Booth Sales!! Yeah!

I signed up for March 12 and then again April 2.

Hopefully some of the girls will show up! I can count on my co-leader at least!

We had our first get together outside of a meeting today. We had a tea party at one the girls' house (we are allowed to have meetings there). It went really well. We mainly did it to let the girls play and really get to know one another since we are a new troop. My question to you all is: At an event like that, what should my role be as leader? It was hosted by another mom: she came up with the idea, she invited everyone, she was the hostess. I ended up just talking with the moms most of the time as I let the girls play and eat. Then we did the promise and the friendship circle. It was all very low key, but the girls all had fun and I think it really helped them get to know one another since they all go to different schools.

Sounds like you did fine. Glad the girls had fun!

I agree...sounds perfect! I might try to convince a mom to host something like this for our troop!

Question for y'all....what do you do to make up petals that a girl missed earning because she was absent from the meeting? I have such a hard time figuring out how to re-create that learning experience for just 1 girl.

Thanks!
