Dairy free milkshakes?

:wave2: Hi everyone!

We are off to WDW in 2 weeks, and I have a question.

Restaurants that are well know for their milkshakes (WCC etc), do they readily have non-dairy alternatives of them?

I ask because I'm slightly lactose intolerant (drinking a huge milkshake would ruin my day, but having a slice of cheese, or butter on bread for example wouldn't do me any harm.)

So I don't want to put any kind of special requests on my meals, as it's easy enough for me to avoid the big milkshakes and ice cream sundaes, and I don't want to put the restaurants to trouble making me dairy free everything when I'm ok in moderation.

BUT if it's simple enough for me to say, "can I get a dairy free milkshake, but the one slice of cheese in my burger is fine", then I would be a happy girl.

Hope I haven't confused you all!!

(Sorry if this is the wrong board for asking, I tried over on the restaurant board, but with no luck. :()

Yes you can get one, but it is made to order, like anything that is done for an allergy.

Yes, my son has had a rice dream milkshake at WCC. We've never tried them anywhere else though and due to his other alleriges they won't mix flavors in for him due to cross contamination. He can only have vanilla or chocolate.

Thanks for this. I love milkshakes (but they don't love me) so I think I'll ask. :)

I just don't want people going to too much trouble as it's not an allergy or anything too serious.

Chef Eddie always takes care of my son at WCC. We've had him now three times for dinner!

Wow, I didn't know you could get dairy free milkshakes.

I'm so glad I have a WCC ADR. My niece is going to have her first milkshake!

The only flavours of dairy free ice cream that they carry anywhere are chocolate and vanilla. Adding a different syrup would not necessarily result in a normal tasting milk shake. I don't think it's an issue of other allergies; I think it's just that these are the only flavours they have. We've always only been offered chocolate or vanilla because that's what they have. I'm grateful to have those options (I know you didn't say you're not; I'm just expressing my own eternal gratitude to Disney for even having these options).

I had a caramel milkshake at WCC and it was the best milkshake that I have ever had. They also have a cotton candy flavored milkshake. They are syrups that are added to the shake so they do make more than chocolate and vanilla. His chocolate shake was rice dream with hershey's chocolate syrup added to it. Chef Eddie would not allow him to have the cotton candy syrup due to cross contamination issues with the company that produces the syrup. He has a peanut allergy as well so that could be the reason but yes there are other flavors at WCC.

Hi

Many thanks for the info.

I didn't relise you could get these. Looks like my DD will be trying her 1st Milkshake!! - you watch she won't even like it!!

Thanks again for the tip

Wow, I haven't seen many dairy free caramel sauces. Does your son only have to watch for lactose or is he also casein free? I know that some places have sauces that they can drizzle over ice cream to make a sundae, but back when I worked at an ice cream consession stand years (OMG how long ago was that) ago the milk shakes just didn't work well when sundae toppings were used in milk shakes. I'm intrigued. My daughter wouldn't want caramel but I sure would enjoy it. I wonder what other allergens it has?

I realize now that I shouldn't have made such broad generalization. Restaurants at resorts may have items that aren't available at parks or other resorts. None of the restaurants that we've been to have had anything else. The only flavours of diary free ice creams (Tofutti or Rice Dream) that any of the restaurants carry are chocolate and vanilla and none of the restaurants that we've been to have offered any flavours of milk shakes other than chocolate and vanilla.

I wonder if these are carried anywhere besides WCC? We'll likely never eat there because of the antics. As fun as they sound to me, my daughter might have a meltdown over them (though she may also really enjoy it; she's unpredictable about these things from day to day so I wouldn't want to take a chance).

Sorry to mislead you but the caramel milkshake was for me and I'm not allergic to dairy. He could only have vanila or chocolate--mixed with Hershey's syrup. A few restaurants we willing to bring him toppings on his sundaes but they had to open a fresh bag of jimmies or gummies etc. Some of the restaurants have sorbet as an option for something different but my son would not eat it since there were pieces of fruit inside or seeds in the rasberry.
The antics at WCC are not really that bad. The server throws the straws and napkins onto your table and unless you need ketchup sometimes they don't even bother you. We were seated in the back room for our last visit and felt we were really not even at the WCC. Our server was very good but it wasn't the same.

In '08 the chef at Sci Fi made my DDs both enormous dairy free milk shakes. They loved them.

I hope they offer them again when we are there in December ... DDs are already looking forward to them

Oooh, awesome! A week today we're eating at Sci Fi, so I think I'll ask in there! :)

Did you have special requests on your reservation? As we wont.

Oh wow! I was going to cancel our WCC reservation because we are over our TS credits and I was trying to avoid paying out of pocket on more meals but I may have to keep it so the girls can have dairy free milkshakes!

If your only reason for going there is to get dairy free milk shakes then you should know that there are other places to get them as well. 50s Prime Time and Sci Fi both do dairy free milk shakes and I believe you can even get them at Pop Century's food court (in hindsight, I can't believe I never asked; we focussed so much on the meals themselves we never thought to ask even though I'm pretty sure they'd be able to do it).

I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with WCC. If you want to eat there then absolutely go for it and have a great time. I'm just saying that if the milkshakes are the ONLY reason you're not cancelling then check out the other places that you're eating and be aware that if it's Disney owned and they serve regular milk shakes then they likely also serve dairy free ones on request.
