D3100 Extra Lens

There is a lot of great info already here, but I would like to add that IF you are going to buy a new lens the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 is a great lens for low light and indoors and is only ~$200.

As for getting used to your camera and when to use which lens, one thing that I found useful was going out for the day with only one lens and shooting as much as possible. Then the next day with a different lens. You will quickly start running into situations where you "need" your other lens. It also pushes you try to get the most out of a particular lens if you don't have the one you "need". Maybe this won't work for others as well as it did for me.

Have fun!

Thanks for all of your info. I fully intend to get that camera out of the box and start practicing.

If I were to get another lens the 35 mm lens in the previous post is the one I was considering from looking at other threads on here. I also like the price. I just need to decide so I can buy the right bag so everything fits. I would hate to buy a bag and then decide I need one more lens then have to go buy another bag.

Who knew buying a new camera could have so many decisions to make.

So my plan is to play with the camera and the lenses I already have this week and then try to make the final decision. Of course we are sick this week so we wont be going out much. I guess that is OK because the pics I am concerned about are indoors and dark rides. I think the 2 lenses I have will be great for outdoors and far away things.

The only thing I wont be able to practice before we leave will be fireworks and that is a whole other bag worms and tripods and remotes and Oh my goodness. Maybe I will just watch those this time around and just shoot for fun.

Thanks for all the advice and I would gladly take anymore suggestions you have.:wizard:

I recently purchased the Nikon AF-S 35 MM 1.8 lens. I bought it specifically for our trip to WDW in October. I took it to our zoo yesterday and played with it a little in the P mode and got some nice shots. Normally, I prefer a telephone lens at the zoo, but I was just practicing.

I think the 35 mm lens will do nicely.

One thing that you should probably start practicing if you want to take pictures on rides is taking picutres with the auto-focus illuminator turned off. It is very bright and can be just as disruptive as a flash to other riders.
