D-Day Invasion- "Strange"-ly Imminent!! TRIP REPORT IS UP!!

Aw man, poor Maroo! I hope she gets to feeling better. I was just looking at my pics from last June's trip and of course the first pic in the album is our DIS meet! :)

I am so interested in your updates about your trip. It is all so interesting. I think I would be "messing in my pants" a lot from the experiences you were having!

She is not. More below....

We've had quite a wild ride here; glad you're enjoying it along with me!

Oh no, I hope Maroo will make a fast recovery! I will pray for her.

Sounds like she's in for some more testing....

I think 45 minutes is still a good time! When I run 5k it takes me about 37 minutes in a normal training run. 5k in 30 minutes is really pretty fast for a normal leisure jogger I think. Anyway, it is more important to find your own speed anyway than hunt for a certain time, unless you are set on becoming competitive.

I am NOT set on becoming competitive! I am doing this so I can score a trip to WDW at some point to do the 10K. End of story. :lmao: I laugh, but it's the sad truth. I still hate running, but know I need to keep some form of a healthy body. ;)

I guess a 40 minute goal then is fine. I'll be shooting for that over the next few weeks.

Are you going to bring your running stuff to Nuremberg? We could go for a run along the river together! :goodvibes

Proabably not. We are aiming to bring just a couple of carryons into Nuremberg, and leave everything else behind at the airport. Although running along the river does sound nice.

And I can tell you that I just bought a bottle of the raspberry flavoured wheat beer, it is in my ice box now! Along with some Fassbrause - which looks pretty nasty btw. :confused3

The former sounds ok; the Fassbrause not so much. I can't exactly remember the differences of them, though. Need to go back to Glenn's thread and study harder.

Running a 5K in 30 minutes is right about a 10 minute mile. That's pretty darn fast for a beginner (I know some veteran runners who don't run that fast) so stop being down on yourself about it. You did great! Like I said on FB, most of us who graduate from C25K cannot run a 5K in 30 minutes. We can run for 30 minutes straight and then we work at increasing our speed.

Sorry to hear about Maroo. Hope she's better soon.

You are right. I guess I just wanted a baseline time to begin to set some goals. I have only done the ONE 20 minute run of W5, so I still have a ways to go with the C25K anyway.

I'll tell her you're thinking of her.

Poor Maroo!! she will be in my prayers for a quick recovery!

Was that a statue of Lenin on the top of that building? If so, why is it still there? I would assume that the people who have lived under that type of government wouldn't want him glorified...but that's just me.

It won't be a quick recovery sounds like.

Yep, that was Lenin!! Good eye! I was wondering if anyone would notice him. They still have a few of those around. The artform itself is actually really cool- one I"ve never seen done before. It is cut away metal, if that makes sense. I think he's there as a reminder of at least some of his ideals, but have not asked about it specifically. I wouldn't think so either, but you never know. :confused3

Liesa-
What terrible news about Maroo. I hope she gets out of the hospital and feels better soon. I will be keeping her in my prayers.

Poor Maroo! That must be scary for her. I hope she recovers soon. Keep us posted.

Looks like you had quite the weather in those pictures of your last post. The security check points sound scary. I can't imagine how they'd treat people who couldn't speak the local language :scared1:

I will do that! I just got off the phone again with her, and will fill you in below.

The Lake is in a valley completely surrounded with snow-capped, glaciated mountains. It is really VERY beautiful there. During the summer they get a lot of thunderstorms that sort of just camp over them. Sometimes the weather does come down into the Lake area too. I LOVE lightening, so it's fun to sit by the pool and just watch the storms going on over the peaks.

There are 2 tactics you can take with the police...

1) Pretend (or not) that you don't speak ANY Russian or local language. They usuallly become impatient quite quickly and just let you go.

OR

2) Speak the local language (not Russian) and they light up, and the conversation quickly turns to small talk, and they send you on your merry way.

Either way, it works out. We've not been put in jail yet. Well, almost, one time.

I find it interesting that the cottonwoods here in Nebraska are "snowing" too. It is very warm and humid here.

Prayers for Maroo. I hope she feels better soon.

It only looked like snow when we were driving at night. Like it was whizzing past our car as we were driving. Well, maybe cottonwoods are just one of those "hardy" trees that can grow just about anywhere. :upsidedow

prayers for a speedy recovery for all in the fabulous party of travelers.

I'll pass your greetings and wishes along!

Poor Maroo !! My mother suffered with ulcerated colitis for many years and had to have an Iliostomy !!! Maroo watch what you eat as many things make it worse BUT make sure you consuklt a dietician so you get all the vitamins you need !!! Not doing so for 8 years caused Mum to have many blind spots in her vision and I got used to being told I had NO HEAD!!!!!!:rotfl2::rotfl2:

They are thinking that ulcerated IS a possibility. More tests in the AM.

Rosie!! You very assuredly DO have a head. I've seen pictures of it. :lmao:

Oh Maroo! Get better, girl!

Liesa, I've finally caught up. How's your hand feeling? Yikes, that looked like a bad bite. But I think I'd have bit anyone that tried to help me during my labor, too;)

Your "vacation" story is turning out to be quite the adventure! Life is going to be so boring for you when you get back to the states - everything is too easy here!

Love that you were able to witness and have a part in a man finding Jesus. What a high note to leave Blankastan on. :cloud9:

Hand is SLOWLY getting better. It hurts in places that originally didn't. THat's weird.

I would welcome a boring life for at least a little while! The "adventure" of planting an herb garden, raising a goat (we are planning on getting one), and shopping in a real grocery store again, sounds welcoming!

We've only "seen" that about 4 times here (in 10 years). There is nothing more exhiliarating!!

Oh my goodness, poor maroo! Liesa, please give her our best and heartfelt prayer when you speak with her? :grouphug:

I came over to check this thread and saw Rosie's post or would have missed it - for some reason have not been receiving update emails lately and wind missing several important posts. :confused3

By the time August arrives we'll all be on pins and needles praying you all make it to Disney in as few pieces as possible!

I have done so. Thanks for praying for her and all of us!

Uh- oh!! Not a good time to unsubscribe!! In a couple of weeks A GAME WILL BE STARTING!!!

I know we're going to need all of our "pieces" to make this a successful campaign against WDW!!!! :lmao:

Liesa-
What terrible news about Maroo. I hope she gets out of the hospital and feels better soon. I will be keeping her in my prayers.

Your post is a nice segue into my update on her:

I just talked with Soldier #2- Maroo.

They had planned on releasing her on Wednesday, but after talking with the GI, they have decided to do some more tests. AS WE SPEAK she is having to "drink the barium". GAG ME!! Poor thing!!! They will be doing the colonoscopy in the morning to see more of what's going on. They will also be doing a biopsy at some point.

They are considering that she may have Crohn's Disease, ulcerated colitis, or some sort of infection in her gut. At this point they need to just do the tests and wait for the results. Really, guys, she needs your prayers for encouragement and answers. That's all I know.

I just got off the phone with maroo who was admitted to the hospital yesterday. The scans showed that she has collitis, which I know absolutely NOTHING about! They are not sure if it's infectious or the other kind (I didn't quite understand the word she used), but is on an IV drip of antibiotics.

I'm starting to wonder if this 3-woman army is really going to actually make it to WDW all in one piece- well, I mean 3 separate pieces. (That's some tricky syntax there!) When I said we all had some real-life battles to fight, I really didn't think it'd include all of THIS!!

She is supposed to be out Wednesday or Thursday.

Maroooooooooo!!!!NOOOOOOO!!!

I hope she gets well soon.....:hug::hug::hug:

Oh Maroo! You are in my prayers for speedy tests, answers and guidance. And that the barium goes quickly. Bleh.

And Liesa, the important thing is you set out to do it, and you DID! Who cares how fast or slow it was? You did it! And it sounds darn respectable at that.

Maroo, I am sending lots of good wishes and I will keep praying for you!

I'm not sure she's been checking in up til now; she told me a few hours ago that she had just gotten her computer brought to her, and that it hurt her IV spot too much to use her phone. She was touched when I told her that lots of you were praying for her, and I will continue to pass along greetings as I can. Of course, she may surprise us and post herself too, now that she has her computer.

You are so right. My DH asked me how it felt to be in the "elite class" of having finished a 5K at all; it doesn't feel elite whatsoever! But it is better than not even getting off the couch. I'd love to be able to jog the whole thing someday- but that's a long way off. Baby steps!

A very good book. "She got up off the couch" by Haven Kimmel. Not to run a 5K but still, you got up! As did she (in the book).

I hear you. I feel pathetic every time I go to a class these days. But it's better than not going!

I am on my computer, finally! :)

My IV blew, so they did a new one and put it in a much better spot for typing.

I am in the middle of the "prep" and it is not a pleasant experience, but the fact that I have not really eaten in two days is probably making it better than it could have been.

I have had a miserable two days.

Oh, poor Maroo. If you talk to her again, hugs and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Thank you!!

Oh my goodness, I hope Maroo has a very speedy recovery!

Thank you! and me, too!

Nice job on the run. I was hoping you'd make it under 50 minutes, so good job!

Wishing Maroo a speedy recovery.

Thank you!

I am not too scared at this point, but it is times like this that I wish I had family in town. Being stuck here by myself is no fun at all!

Yes! I am just now seeing all of the posts.

You guys are simply amazing!!

Oh bummer, I missed you!

I hope you get well soon. It seems like a small thing but IV placement is huge.

I am on my computer, finally! :)

My IV blew, so they did a new one and put it in a much better spot for typing.

Well, thanks goodness for that, at least. ;)

I already said it on the wish trip thread, but I hope the tests give you some good info to help you. It is never fun sitting around the hospital for days on end, no matter what you are there for!

We interrupt this PTR for a tasty interlude!

Each week until our trip, I've chosed one recipe from a few of the places we'll be eating at to try out, and to help whet my appetite for the tastiness to come!! Give them a try, I think you'll like them too!

First off: Ginger Carrot soup from BOMA!! We had the a couple nights ago, and let me tell you... it was a smash hit! EVERYONE, including the kids LOVED IT!! Give it a try- you won't be sorry!

Recipe is below- I added a little extra ginger to give it more of a kick! I also think a dash of cayenne would be tasty in it.

Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients:

1 pound carrots, chunky cut
2 cups water
2 cups heavy cream
1 cup milk
2 ounces American cheese, sliced or shredded
½ ounce ground ginger (fresh ONLY)
2 ounces sugar, adjust as needed
Roux (2 ounces butter and 2 ounces flour)

Method:

To make a roux, melt the butter in a small sauce pot, slowly add the flour to make a paste. Cook until incorporated. Remove from heat and set aside.

In pot, cook carrots in water, sugar, and ginger. Let simmer until carrots are soft. Using a beurre mixer, puree until smooth.

Add heavy cream, milk, and roux. Cook until soup is hot and slightly thick.

Add American cheese and let simmer until cheese melts.

Adjust seasoning.

the soup looks interesting....I don't like cooked carrots so I probably wouldn't like it.

It was a lot sweeter than I thought it'd be when I read the recipe. The ginger adds quite a fun flavor to it! Doesn't taste anything like those rubbery cooked carrots I usually make- give it a try!

That soup looks delish! :thumbsup2

Boma promises to deliver up some tasty grub for us! ::yes::

My kids love carrots, but Jack prefers them to crunch. I would have to come up with a cream supplement for the soup (Jack is gfcf now), I might try it in the fall. It's too hot for soup 'round here right now.:)

what is the moving countdown?

Hmmm... it's a sweet soup, I'd think that soy milk might work in it. I'm pretty experimental in the kitchen, so I'd try it.

We had bean soup today for lunch, and you're right, soup is hot. But this one really is very light. Oh, yeah, I went easy on the cheese to make it not quite so thick. and since I can't get American processed poopola here, I used a soft white cheese, similar to jack.

We leave our city in 46 days. It's a LONG process of actually "moving" since we're stopping in several places along the way, but 46 days is the countdown. :scared1:

I am with Chérie, carrots are one of those vegetables that can only be eaten uncooked. But looking at the ingredients, carrots appear to be just a minor ingredient, you could also call it a creamy cheese soup with carrots... :rolleyes1 But it sounds very similar to the butternut squash soup recipe I once tried from Boma. This was the reason that I had to find out what "American cheese" is - processed cheese. :goodvibes
