I just used the Rite - Aid $25 gift card for a transferred Rx today for my son's *new* Rx. This is the second time my CVS has done it - - they have no problem taking any competitor's coupon on a new prescription, even if it says transferred. But I agree you need to call ahead and ask the pharmacist if they'll do it. Here's how my conversation went when I did that:
Me: Hi, is this the pharamacist?
Ph: Yes, it is.
Me: I wonder if you can help me. My friend said CVS takes competitors coupons for gift cards with prescriptions. Is that right? (playing dumb..)
Ph: We sure do.
Me: Mine is for a new prescription but my coupon from Rite Aid is for a transferred one. She said it didn't matter, is that right?
Ph: Right.
Me: Wow, cool! So can I bring this in right now, are you going to be there?
Ph: Sure any time.
Voila'! I smile when I walk up and tell them I was the person who called earlier, etc. The second time (today) I just drove to the window and gave her the coupon like it was old hat for me... she didn't bat an eyelash.
The best part? I got a $25 gift card to CVS and my son's rx cost a whopping $1.78!

Woo hoooooo!!!
