Thank goodness I had bought coffee the night before. Mickey gave us a wakeup call at 7:30, my DD set her cell phone alarm and i set the clock...just in case. I had prepaid for our tickets which included the free shuttle so I wanted to be sure we made the bus. First a bus picks you up at your hotel, then you're brought to the Greyhound office to be "sorted". They provide shuttles to various destinations such as the San Diego Zoo or Sea World. They were very efficient and we were on our way in no time. Never having been to LA, it was interesting to see the landscape...urban yet lush with trees and then the hilly areas of Hollywood. We arrived about an hour and a half from boarding. Universal was EMPTY..completely empty. It was eerie.
We had gone to Universal for one reason only: DD has a fascination/horror of dinosaurs and she was dying to ride Jurassic Park. Given the fact that Disneyland was closing early today due to CM parties, I agreed to indulge her.
We walked onto the ride with no waiting and I was surprised to find that it was a water ride. It was disappointing. We had been to WDW and rode the Dino ride at Animal Kindom and it was much better. For one thing, here at Universal you could see what was ahead...there was no real suprise and you only got mildly wet. It was as if they couldn't decide what kind of ride they wanted it to be. Next we strode over to The Mummy. The outside of this ride scared me. You were required to stow all belongings in lockers and there were warning signs about it's speed and shaking. I cringed. I hate throwing up and this looked like an invitation to hurl. But, I'm a sport and we proceeded onward. Again the place was empty and we smugly strolled past the empty queue. Strapped into my seat, my knees were shaking so bad my daughter noticed..funny because she shook as we boarded Jurassic.
Well, I'll say this for the Mummy..it was fast, just like they said...but I mean fast! The ride lasted for what seemed like less than a minute..no joke. I thought if I had been waiting in line for this ride longer than the two minutes it took to walk the queue I would have been furious.
It's not that it was a bad ride, but it was over in the blink of an eye. But, at least breakfast remained where it was, so I had my dignity intact.
As we exited, we wondered what to do with the remaining 5 hours we had??? Fear Factor (which I wouldn't have visited anyway) was closed, as was the Van Hessling House. We took the studio tour and I enjoyed that. If you've ever been to Universal you'll know that it is built in two tiers. The guide book said it uses an escalator to go from one to the other...it does not say that it uses Four escalators and that you go UP, UP, UP or Down, Down, Down. This part of the park made more more dizzy than any of the rides.
