Customizing quick service orders

I've been following all the talk about dining and mobile orders in the hopes of having good strategies if we get to go to Disneyland at the end of June.

I haven't heard much mention from anyone on customizing orders though. It seems like the options to actually customize anything via mobile order are very limited.

My 9-year-old is a very selective eater and I'm stressing about not being able to find things he will eat. We have already made dining reservations for once per day to hopefully have more flexibility and a nice break. But for other quick service meals can you order at the counter if needed? Or can you mobile order and then ask about customizing at pick up?

Deleted because DLgal provided a more accurate response below.

I have wondered about this, too. We have one person in our group with a number of food allergies and in the past he was always able to ask for modifications to menu items and find something to eat that wouldn’t make him sick, but with mobile order that doesn’t appear to work. We’re worried that he’ll have to bring his own food this trip.

We have been able to customize everything we have ordered so far, down to whether you want lettuce on the burgers. I have a picky ASD kid who only likes plain hamburgers and I was able to remove everything but the meat and bun when ordering at Red Rose Tavern, Flo's, etc. Plaza Inn allows you to choose only white meat, allows you to select whether you want 2 sides of mashed potatoes and gravy vs one and a side of veggies.

You can play on the app and pretend like you are placing a mobile order. It will let you go through the whole process so you can see see exactly how you can customize your order at different places. You can do this now from home, you don't need to be in the parks and you don't have to have linked tickets even. I did this at home before going and it was immensely helpful in seeing where we could eat and how much I could customize at each place. We have been twice and have had no issues being able to get our food the way our kids want it. Some places have more customization options, but most at least allow you to leave off cheese, sauces, and veggies from things like hamburgers and chicken sandwiches.

Just to add, if you want to play around on the app, you have to acutally select the item, then it will say "customize your selection" so click on that little blue arrow, and it will bring up the options you can select/de select.

Thanks DLgal. I have been playing with the app, but I'll keep checking and practicing. Maybe I need to update the app because even when I see customization options, when clicking them nothing seems to happen.

And oh how I wish my kiddo would eat a hamburger or chicken nuggets (or mac and cheese!). Our best bet is plain cheese pizza and plain pasta no sauce and I'm not seeing many options with the limited menus. But maybe he'll surprise me! But good to know there are ate least some customizations that work.

Go to Napolini. They can make you a plain cheese pizza for $11 in under 5 minutes.

Finding plain pasta will be a challenge. Although there is a penne pasta kids meal at Plaza Inn and this is one location that DOES have walk up ordering, so you could probably ask for no sauce by ordering there in person.

Mobile order has an allergy-friendly section but I think if you tell the CM outside the restaurant you have food allergy concerns they should allow you to order in person.

Thank you! He has multiple allergies, and some are a little more obscure which can make eating out a challenge. (No beef, lamb, shellfish, gluten, nightshades, peanuts, cows milk dairy, or anything fermented are the big ones, but there's a few others that are more intolerance rather than allergies and cause minor reactions.) In pre-covid times we had a big spreadsheet with all the menus and had highlighted everything he could eat with and without modifications. With the limited menus as they reopen, there's not much he can have and most of it will require some kind of adjusting to be okay. It's good to know we can ask the CMs and see what we can do, but we'll also pack some food he knows he can eat just to be on the safe side.

They options aren’t as robust on certain items. It was better pre covid with being able to remove stuff.

Edit: For example from Cocina Cucamonga I can't remove avocados from the tacos which I am allergic to. It's not an option under customize, the only option is to remove onions/cilantro so you can't ask for the salsa on the side or to remove the avocados.

It's always been inconsistent. We could never mobile order pre Covid at Smokejumpers, for example, because you couldn't choose to leave off the burger sauce, and none of us liked it. It was like a weird mix between mayonnaise and bbq sauce.

Yeah, that's my current issue with Cocina Cucamonga as I posted in my edit above. I can't remove the avocados in the app.

Yea pre pandemic this was always the issue with mobile order for the unreasonably picky eater in the family (me)

My work around was to immediately place the order right in front of the mobile order window then verbally customize it with the CM. Glad to hear there are customization options in app now.

If you can't do what you NEED to do in the app, you can ask for a manager and tell them you can't do the required customization.
