For a school project, my daughter has to create a map of the locations she has ever visited. I thought you could use Google map to mark locations. Despite my best efforts, I can't seem to get the map to mark locations - just save the locations.

Can anyone help me with some directions/tips? Is there a website that would work better for this? Her locations are all east of St Louis MO/south of Chicago IL. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

TIA!

There's a lot of map web pages out there. In google, just type maps and you'll see alot. I'm not sure which ones you can do this with but I think I've seen it. I'll check it out & if I find one, I'll let you know.

Just curious, does it have to be on a computer map? Can you print out a map of the eastern seaboard & have her find them & place a gold star on each one?

I don't have kids so I don't know how they are doing things nowadays. It might be more fun for her to try & find each place herself, but then that's really not what you are asking. I just love loooking at maps. Which I'll get back to now.

You may be thinking of Google Earth - with Google Earth you can map out (and pinpoint) certain locations. You can also create a custom file of locations (for example, Earthwatch.org has a Google Earth file that has all their scientific expeditions that you can download - pretty slick).

How to create the file? Off the top of my head don't know and only have a few minutes here.

Check http://www.gelessons.com/ and http://www.juicygeography.co.uk/blog/ for possible starting points.

You can use Google Maps and API - but that is more webpage authoring in combining data points - don't think you want to go there.

Thanks for the quick replies! I think Google Earth may be what we are thinking of. She has to create it on the computer but can also just simply search for and print off a US map and mark her locations. Since the project isn't due until March 9, she was trying for something a bit more 'fancy'. She is in 7th grade and wants a bit more sophisticated look than just ink pen on a map. ;)

Of course, if she can't figure it out - or I can't figure out how to explain it to her - that will be what she ends up with! A map and a sharpie marker! :teacher:

Probably too late but if you are a AAA member, their website allows you to map out a driving route where you could include all of those points.
