okay so we obviously have a wide range of kiddos but we a running into this problem of family movie watching....

is there something available to bleep out curse words when we watch movies?

We watched national lampoons christmas and I had to cover the 5 year olds ears and one of our favorites Mrs. Doubtfire has some cursing

I would imagine your best bet would be to make sure the 5 year old (and others too young for them) don't watch anything other than PG or G movies.

Christmas Vacation is rated PG-13.

I know the PG 13 probably wasn't the best choice :thumbsup2 I used to know someone with a curse box and it would bleep out curse words back in the 80's but I've never seen anything like that now

doubtfire is pg 13 too

Not even sure how something like that would work? It would mean DVD's and blueray movies would have to have an imbedded tag/signal under the dialogue that a "reader" would recognize to bleep out the words.

Million dollar idea waiting to happen! Get on it!

okay so we are watching PG "Big" now and G D was said so I just i better get on that million dollar idea....

I just can't win

We had a DVD player that did this. We *loved* it. You could choose what you wanted blocked. Everything from curse words, to God's name in vain, to sexual situations.

Sadly, I don't remember the manufacturer, and our cat broke it. She freaks out and pounces when the DVD is ejected. She's broken 3 of them now. :sad2:

There is something called TV Guardian, but we haven't tried it.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that there ARE ways to do this. Many PG-13 movies would be fine for kids if not for the language. No need to write them off totally. :thumbsup2

??maybe teach about bad words - I bet they hear this and much more in school

that TV guardian is really neat....$189 I may consider it too bad it is right after Christmas so I would have to save up for it:thumbsup2

it is really not a big deal with the older kids but the kindergartener/5th grader are a bit more impressionable

If you want a movie with no swear words better go with a G rated.

Even the original Star Wars movie had one swear word, just to give it a PG rating. I heard Lucas did this on purpose because he feared the general movie public wouldnt go see a G rated movie.

Like in Spielbergs Close Encounters of the Third Kind, one the kids says,
"who wants to see some dumb movie rated 'G' for kids?"

Ummm... Don't let your 5 year old watch PG-13 movies. The ratings are there for reason. I wouldn't even let my 10 yr old watch Christmas Vacation last year. He didn't ask this year, so I let it go. As much as I love the movie and others that I'd love to share with the kids, I have to make a judgment as a parent as to what they can see based on their age. It's not a cuss word here or there that's so much the problem as is the sexual stuff (ie -- Clark's girl in the swimming pool fantasy).

This has always frustrated me too. So many movies I'd love to watch as a family but can't because of a few things they feel they need to throw in there to be cool enough for teens.

My kids are getting older now (12 and 14), so we are loosening up, but I would still prefer less. I use this site to check, exactly what the rating is for, and it is very very thorough...

I still would have loved to have a bleeper box so we adults could enjoy some non-toddler movies when they were getting past that age but still too young for PG13 or even some PG.

Had Christmas Vacation recorded on the DVR from Comedy Central, so nearly everything was blanked out (not bleeped, but cut out.)

My 10 yr old and 7 yr old LOVED the movie and laughed hysterically.

I did hit the FF button during the Clark dreaming about the swimming pool scene.

You can take the worst language rated R movie available and even the kindergarten kids are subjected to far worse and more language during a 20 minute bus ride to school. I can hear them all on the bus when the doors open to let my kids off. The language, even if nothing cut or bleeped out, in Christmas Vacation certainly isn't going to scar a child for life.

Have you ever been to the school at lunch/rec? I couldn't believe some of the things I was hearing out of these kids mouths! Even in kindergarten my daughter came home asking me about what a word she heard was---slang for male parts.....I told her it was not a nice word for the correct name for the male part and that was that and I have never heard it out of her mouth afterthat.

:thumbsup2 totally agree--all you can do is talk to them about THEM not saying things like that and hope for the best!!

Watch movies in a cable station that censors swear words. I think in recent years, the ratings have gotten pretty liberal although even if it was rated PG, I would assume there would be some adult content (get your mind out of the gutters, I mean cursing, sexual references, mild violence). I think if you wanted to rent your best bet would be to check out the websites that review movies and let you know what to expect.

the lunch room at my kids elementary school is fairly strict and there's not alot of trouble so far with the bus BUT they swear like sailors at the middle and high school:headache:

I did give the whole talk about cursing and used the fast forward alot. :rotfl:The website suggested here that had the play by play helped alot so that I could fast forward the really inappropriate stuff. I just need to do a better job of selecting movies but the older kids are really beyond G movies....

I thought "big" was PG so that was my fault but I do think back in the day it was rated PG but the ratings are different now

Oh and I did fast forward the POOL scene in Christmas Vacation :thumbsup

DH really doesn't think it is a big deal:rolleyes1
