cursing in movies

Really, the only surefire fix is to do what I do. I only allow silent films in my home. If Charlie Chaplin ain't in it, we're not watching it. For the life of me, I can't understand why he isn't making any new movies these days. He's soooo funny.

I'm not a parent, but in my personal experience with my 9 nieces and nephews, the more attention you call to it, the more they'll notice it. Age dependent, of course, but I just remember my sister fast forwording through something she had DVR'd that she didn't want her daughter to see (6 or 7 at the time?) and ALL Kira did the rest of the night was ask "Mommy what was that? Why did you forward through it?" And NO explanation was good enough cuz now she wanted to SEE it for herself. Not even "just commercials, dear" would do it. Now had she just left it alone, she probably wouldn't have even looked up from her barbie.

JMHO, of course, from loads of babysitting adventures.. but the same thing seems to happen if you clasp your ears over a kid's head so they don't ear something.

I agree with the PP and your dh...it's not really a big deal IMO. The more attention you draw to it...the more they're going to think they're missing out on something neat....that's how their little minds operate. ;)

My girls are 16 and 12. My boys are 5 and 11 months. We definitely watch PG13 together and we just ignore the cuss words. Every once in a whiile I have FF something...but as soon as I did the kids were dying to know what they missed. :lmao: So now I just leave it be and so far so good. :thumbsup2

We watch the censored versions. :) I get tired of all of the language, myself. Which isn't to say that I don't occasionally swear myself. Sometimes it is as though they are just trying to put the "f" bomb in as much as possible. I've worked with juvenile delinquents and not even those wanna be offensive kids swear that much!

We also have a TV Guardian. It has settings, so you can decide how much you want blocked..... I think mine was not much over $100- but I have had it for years and can't remember for sure the cost.... Wal Mart sells them.

BIG was a shocker for me also! I remembered watching it when I was younger and thought is was a kid friendly movie, when I went to watch it with my kids I was shocked! There are some movies that even the filming or content is not appropriate for kids. But an example of where the TV Guardian is nice- is adventures in babysitting. I loved that movie when I was young- when I went to watch it with my kids, I was shocked at the language! The over all content of the movie was very appropriate and funny for kids..... But the language (IMO) ruined the movie and was completely unnecessary!

smb6's post reiterates what I was saying...

You watched these movies as a kid and didn't even realize there were inappropriate scenes or language. A big deal probably wasn't made over the inappropriate content. Now had someone been FF parts of it or holding their hands over your ears... I guarantee you would remember that there were parts that were "taboo." You remembered it for what it was...a cute movie. And as an adult you now grasp the entire movie...but kids surely don't.

I'm not saying let your kids watch Borat or American Pie by any means. ;) But I don't think watching a PG movie is going to ruin your kids. JMO of course. :thumbsup2

the lunch room at my kids elementary school is fairly strict and there's not alot of trouble so far with the bus BUT they swear like sailors at the middle and high school:headache:

Apparently that's not the case here - last week my middle schooler asked me "What is the F word? I hear people talk about the F word but I've never actually heard what it is." :lmao:

Anyway, I'd try to record it from a censored station because your kids may be too little to use it as a teachable moment. But for older kids, I'd say "Hey, did you notice they said a bad word there? I don't want you to use that word."

And now I'm going crazy because I can't remember the swimming pool scene from Christmas Vacation! :rotfl:
