Cursing= automatic termination

If I knew how to post a poll, i would, but here's a question, inspired by another thread..and by some things ive witnessed the past few weeks..
Would you expect to be immediately terminated, no questions asked, for cursing at work?

Well I'm a teacher so it's definitely a no-no to use any bad language. I can have a pretty foul mouth at home but at work, I wouldn't even think of it. Even so, I'm sure we'd get in trouble, but immediate termination, no questions asked? I don't even think that would happen to teachers.

What's the story?!

Then again, there are only 6 of us and I would never do it if there was a customer in the office. I usually slip. Being horomonal and all.

I obviously don't use it with customers, although I have been known to give the computer screen the finger after my index finger.....

If you have a contract saying that you get 3 warnings(or other protections)... no

Bottomline, if an employee can not control his toungue in front of the BOSS or CUSTOMER. He deserves to be terminated.

We do try to be careful not to let one slip where a customer could hear.

No, not unless the company had clear guidelines that forbid it.

I will add, though that I'm speaking of just a word or two, in a relatively normal tone of voice. If someone were to go on a 20 minute "blue" rant at the top of their lungs in front of (or God forbid, directed at) a customer, then I could see it.

It happened to me years ago when I worked for a construction company. I was fired for language unbecoming of a lady. Now I work as an Army contractor, so bosses don't seem to mind. In fact when I first started the job, my boss then (he is gone now) was so happy that his language didn't bother me.

Not that I have a potty mouth, but I needed to make it clear that they could cuss around me and that I could take it.

I said no, however, I'm wrong. If someone is caught cursing in a patient area, where non-employees are in earshot, it is grounds for termination.

During mtgs, or just in offices- No. My boss uses the F word like most people use the word "the"

So I guess my answer should have been "other"

I'm not a "potty mouth" either, but I use *ahem* "language" when appropriate I work with about 70 "good ole boys" and 5 women. We womenfolk hold our own (oh, and those good ole boys, would be the first to rescue me if my car broke down or I was stuck in the snow )

ETA: This would absolutely depend on your profession and work environment.

Wow, there's no way that would happen at my office. People curse all the time. Even so, I really couldn't imagine that anywhere, not even as a teacher...at least not a no questions ask kind.

No. I work in a hospital and hear people cuss all the time. I've been known to let a few choice words go. But there's a difference between saying "Oh, dog poop!" <use your imagination> and cussing somebody out. Definitely you could expect to get a written reprimand for cussing somebody out, and I can't even imagine what would happen if you cussed in front of or at a patient--have never heard it happen!

If you don't mind me asking, could you tell me what kind of company/place you work for? I'm just curious, because nothing comes to mind for me, but if you'd rather not say, no problem.
