We will be heading to Disneyland on 12/10. I noticed that there is construction on I5 in Commerce CA. Since we will be driving through that section of I5 South bound between 10:00 pm and 11:00 pm, I was curious about the construction activity timing. Are the operating at night and closing lanes? Just want to know if I need to route around that section of I5.

Thanks in advance for any insight you might have.

Caltrans would provide a well-marked detour if closed. If you have a smartphone, Google the route before and during the drive, as Caltrans provides all the freeway speed data to Google

Lots of people suggest catching the 210 just south of Santa Clarita. Head thru Pasadena to the 57. Head west and it drops you off on the 5 just a mile or so from DL. It's about 20 miles more but eliminates all the I5 construction. I'm not sure about that time of night but we got stuck in it early Oct around 7 am and it added an hour to our trip.

Thanks for the reply. I can't find any reliable sources on the number of lane closures and the timing. The best I can piece together is 3 out of 4 South bound lanes are closed during construction time. Given the volume at all hours on the 5 this could present a problem.

We hav done the 210/57 route before and will probably do so just to avoid the potential dealys.

Thanks again.

Just got back today from Disneyland- zero traffic or construction on I5 in either direction from Bay Area to Disneyland. A month ago we drove down and there was some nighttime construction- 2 lanes closed if I remember correctly, around 11 pm. Traffic clogged up a bit, but no significant delay.

That's great to know! Can I ask what time you left the Bay Area and when you arrived at DLR? And what time of day did you leave DLR and arrive back home?

I am doing the drive down on Wednesday and returning on Sunday. I know...I will hit a lot of holiday traffic. But we don't have a choice for the days we have to go and return. I plan to leave SF at 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday and we also plan to leave early (by 7:00 a.m.) on Sunday to head home.

I was thinking of taking 210/57 but if there isn't any construction on I-5 then maybe I'll just stick on the 5. Thanks for any tips!

I would love to know too. We are leaving at 8:00am on a Friday in two weeks from the east bay. Really don't want to get stuck in traffic at the tail end of the trip with two kids that just want to be there!! TIA!!

Like I said before, you really need to check your map App on your phone before and during your drive. Google or Apple both do the job, use more than one to see best options.

Traffic is super dynamic and planning ahead won't help with an accident or small construction work that isn't posted.

We left Tuesday night at 7:00 pm and arrived at 1:30 am. Today (Sunday) we left at 9:30 am and arrived home at 3:00 pm. 1 stop for gas/potty each way at the Grapevine area. :thumbsup2

We left yesterday afternoon at 4:30 pm. The smoothest ride ever. No traffic backups at all. Hit LA around 7. No construction going on at all. It was Sunday evening. Minimum 3 lanes all the way. Sure different from last time.
We come from Tulare in the central valley. Almost exactley 200 miles from our house to Mickeys.
Traveling in our motorhome so we slow to around 50 mph climbing the Grapevine.
Now it's time to play.
