My DS joined cub scouts this year - he is a tiger scout - lst. grade. Does anyone know where I can buy a uniform. The price they gave us is $120 for a uniform. Anyone know anyplace cheaper I can order from?

Thanks

Well, I don't know how it works in your area, but our tigers usually just get the T-shirt and maybe the cap. I would also recommend checking out your local Goodwill or other thrift store. Garage sales are a possibility too. Good luck!

I found the scout uniform at Dunham's Sporting Good store.

ebay.
When my son was in scouts, tigers only wore their t-shirt and cap.

Ebay, thrift stores in your area, a uniform exchange from the local scout shop or your pack.

Our pack doesn't require the cub scout pants. The school we are affiliated with has navy pants as their uniforms and they work perfectly with the cub shirts.

Have fun!

Look on Ebay. It's a good place to get used Scout uniforms.

We do only the tshrit here. They just ordered them last week.

To all the Mom's of new Scouts: OT OT :offtopic: :offtopic:

I am the proud mom of TWO Eagle Scouts and I noticed a few posters mentioning EBAY for used and new uniforms...that is a great option...but I wanted to add that BOTH my DS' went all through Scouting..(no Tigers) but Cub through Boy Scouts to Eagle and before all of you go and donate those uniforms or sell them on EBAY...I wanted to tell you that I opted to SAVE them. :goodvibes

My DS' are 24&20yo and I have their complete CUB/WEBELOS/BOY uniforms hanging in their closets. Belts included. They are great memorabilia esp if Scouting is something they will be doing all their lives. Too look at the CUB uniform just gives me such a thrill from those days long ago!!! :goodvibes

Many troops and packs have programs to reuse uniforms. Tiger cubs usually just have an orange shirt and a cap.

Have fun. Scouting is great.

My ds is also a Tiger Cub this year. We were lucky that his cousin did one year of Tiget Cubs last year and dropped out. So, we got his hand-me-down shirt, neckerchief, and belt. All I had to buy were the council patch, pack numbers, and hat (which was optional, but ds wanted it, and I figured I saved so much other money, we could splurge on it). Ds is required to have the shirt, neckerchif, and belt. The pants are not required in his pack (for the Cubs), due to the fact that they are so expensive and they grow out of them so quickly.

To the PP who saved all of her boys' scout uniforms. I went through 12 years of girl scouts. While my Mom didn't save the actual uniforms, I do have my sash from Senior scouting, with all of my advanced badges on it. My Mom took all the others and put them in an envelope for me...right down to my Brownie Bees. :goodvibes

ETA: We have a local Army & Navy store that sells some of the scouting stuff. That's where I got ds' stuff that I did need to buy.

I just outfitted my brand new Wolf and Webelo :teeth: with everything but the hats and socks. It was 155.00 for both complete. Then again, we're in Florida, so it was shorts and s/s shirts.

Sometimes, other scouts in the pack will hand down uniforms. I was going to eBay, but we had no class B's left over to purchase-and they were strongly encouraged to have their A's for their Bobcat ceremony. My younger son definitely will be involved for a while, so I didn't mind spending the money-the webelo uniform will be his someday.

So, how many others are getting asked by their boy if they can wear their uniform to school today, pretty please? :thumbsup2

Thanks everyone - trust me all the parents in my DS den only want to do the t-shirts, but the person in charge of the pack wants full uniforms. They say the uniforms can cost about $120 for something he will probably fit into just for this year.

I looked on ebay and didn't see anything in his size, I really don't want to spend $120!

Hi!

I see you are in Bergen County, NJ. I am in Somerset County. Try Effingers Sporting Goods. For someplace closer to you I think you can go to the national boy scout site and they have a search for dealers near you.

I would push back against the den leader for insisting on the full uniform - it is totally unnecessary and I have never seen a group of tigers in NJ wearing anything other than the Tshirt (and sometimes only the cap!).

If the leader keeps insisting, try to cheat a little - go to Old Navy and buy a pair of navy blue chinos or cargo pants - they will blend right in. There's also no need to buy the "official" belt - at his age, they don't put any achievements on it and it is about 15 dollars alone! Also, buy only the short sleeved shirt, and buy a generic turtleneck of the same color, so the "summer" shirt can be used in winter with the turtleneck layered underneath.

I guess we are lucky in our bear den - all the moms encourage this type of economizing and we've been able to give each other good tips over the years!

good luck!

Jane

My boys started as Tigers and now are boy scouts - Life and Star -I really have never heard of any troop or pack insisting on the pants et al for any of the boys especially Tigers. I am committee chair for a Troop and all that is required is a Class A shirt, belt and sash. For courts of honor we ask for scout or nice pants. At the pack level, my boys had the Tiger shirt.

I didn't buy scout shorts and pants until my oldest ( Boy Scout) went to National Jamboree. IMHO, that is way over the top. Are the other scouts in the pack in full unitorm too?

I have an idea...if this is *so* important to the den leader, how about the DEN LEADER buys all the boys their uniforms :rolleyes1 ? Let's see...$120 x...now how many boys are in this den?

If the leader tries to insist, that might be a deal-breaker for me. I'd probably be thinking about about starting my own pack with all the other parents.

agnes!

My DH is a den leader and all the boys in their pack get the shirt (ss) patches, bandana neck thing, and belt. They wear the same shirt for the whole time they are Cubs. THey are cut baggy so you can buy it a good size bigger in first grade and it should last at least 2-3 yrs. Our Dens also hand down their neck bandanas to another den at the Blue and Gold dinner at the end of the year. They wear any pants in the early yrs. I think the shirt was around 22 so that's not too bad. I would call the Pack Leader and ask about the Den leaders request. The Pack leader may not be aware that this person is insisting on the whole uniform and that may not be Pack policy- they don't want to lose boys over expensive pants that is for sure.

My boys also started as Tigers. They wore the orange T-shirt & the cap. $120 is a lot of money for something a kid is going to grow out of. I suggest that you rally the parents of the Tigers for the next committee meeting. Calmly ask that the full uniform requirement be "revisited". Be armed with costs and a compromise uniform. I would imagine that $120 is going to change some parents' minds about letting their boys join.

Each troop/pack has a different "personality". My boys are in a very traditional troop. They are expected to have and wear full class A uniforms to all scouting functions including when travelling. We knew this when we choose this troop. It has a reputation for being the best troop in the District and one of the best in a very large council - not bad for a troop that has been in existance less than 5 years.

My boys are leaving this evening for a camping trip. There is a high likelihood that it will be snowing when they arrive. They will not have an opportunity to change prior to pitching their tents and setting up camp. They are still expected to be in full class A uniform for the trip. In fact, I will heading to the scout store today to buy another pair of long scout pants. Pitching a tent in the dark while it is snowing will be challanging enough. I don't want either of my boys attempting that in shorts. My oldest did arrive and depart last January's ski trip in class A shorts.

You might also try Sunny's Surplus if you have one near you.

Oh my goodness! What is costing so much? When my son was in Tigers he only had a t shirt. Being in Scouts is for everyone and it shouldn't have to break the bank to do so. I might, if in your shoes, try to get in contact with the Den Leader. Ask if this is a requirement to join Scouts. Or get all the parents together and vote. If the leader still insists, tell him/her to purchase all the uniforms. Very last resort....Tigers only last a year. Wait until next year.
