I know of lot of you take grandkids on DCL with you. Our daughter is going to go with the grandparents next summer to Alaska. So far we are not invited.....

So what did you do as grandparents as far as paperwork? Do you get full power of attorney, medical PoA, just the DCL signatures, etc?

Anyone run into any issues not having something?

Thanks

Whenever we have our grands out of their state, we get a letter signed by parents and notarized** stating that the children, by name, are traveling with us from (date) to (date) and it is anticipated that we will be in (location, location). It also states that we have medical power of attorney (that might not be the right term) in the event the parents cannot be reached in a medical emergency. We also have copies of their insurance cards and passports even if in US.

I'm pretty sure we originally found the letter online and tailored it. We just fill in the blanks for each trip.

** Not sure if needs to be notarized - may vary by state- but my daughter works with a notary so it's easy.

We've never needed to use any of above thank goodness.

Just to note... "Power of Attorney" (medical or otherwise) is a legal document. It's not just something that can be stated in a letter and I can't imagine anyone going to that effort and expense just for a vacation. Besides, I'm not sure a parent can grant POA on behalf of a minor child.

A letter will suffice and the letter can state something to the effect the grandparents are authorized to make emergency medical decisions in the absence of the parents. DCL also has their own Minor Authorization Form which should be completed in addition to a letter.

If the cruise departs from Vancouver and the child will be traveling alone with the grandparents be sure your letter specifically states they are allowed to take the child into Canada -- Canadian border agents can be very fussy even for a child traveling with 1 parent (wanting authorization from the other non-traveling parent).
