We have friends that are looking into cruising with us late 2019. Her elderly parents live with them and they are not in greatest of health. The few times that they have tried to go away, there’s a medical emergency and they have had to turn around and come home.

They are looking for insurance that will cover canceling the cruise prior to sail date if her parents have medical emergency. What are their insurance options?

We use Insure My Trip, an travel insurance aggregator that allows you to compare policies from multiple companies to find one that's cruise specific, and meets your needs (including the issue you mention).

They'll definitely want to check into the pre-existing condition limitations if the parents have ongoing medical issues. I'm not certain, but I imagine the parents' conditions could disqualify them from a claim without a waiver. Such waivers are typically included in most insurance IF the policy is purchased within two to three weeks of when the initial deposit is made, but after that it's hit or miss. You can find a few policies that will include it regardless and others where it's available only at an additional cost or not at all.

They want the kind that has the pre-existing condition waiver. It will be somewhat more expensive and they will likely have to buy the insurance immediately.
