I am also considering this instead of bringing my lap top to download digital pictures.
Bye, Kim
Kim,
this sounds like a rip-off to me:
A portable harddisk with an integrated card-reader for 6 different kinds of memorycards is available here in Germany at the following prices:
20 GB with USB 1.1 interface: 180 ($210)
40 GB with USB 2.0 interface: 245 ($290)
You can also buy the "blank" device: Just the housing with the elctronics, the cardreader and the battery, but without a disk. It comes to about 120 ($140). You can then insert any 2.5inch-harddisk and may come to a slightly cheaper price than mentioned above.
You can also get the Archos Multimedia Jukebox & Photo Module.
This is a portable harddisk, with an integrated MP3-Encoder/Player, an MPEG4/DIVX-videoplayer which can be connected to your TV, playing movies ripped from the Internet. It automatically encodes audio from any source to MP3. It also has a small colour-screen, which can be used to check the photos or watch movies. It starts at about 250 ($295) and goes up to about 500 ($590) for the biggest one with 40 GB-disk and an integrated FM-radio.
The device I bought is a CD-writer with an integrated card-reader for 7 different types of memorycards, which burns the pictures on a CD. It also works as a Diskman and as an external writer (36x speed) for your PC/Laptop. It cost 199 ($235) as a special offer. The MSRP is 269 ($315). I think it is the most reasonable offer as it is cheaper than the harddisks and has virtually unlimited storage capacity. Furthermore it enables you to provide your co-cruiser with instant copies of your pictures
The only advantages of the portable harddisks are: The are only about a third or half the size of the CD-writer and the come with an integrated LiIon-battery. The CD-writer needs a wall-outlet, but can be upgraded with a battery-pack.
I own 2x 128MB and 1x 32 MB for my new camera, which is good for about 150 pics in the highest resolution with compression. So I don't need the portable harddisk - And I wouldn't like to lug another piece of electronics around the parks. So the CD is the perfect solution for me.
