I had heard several news stories in the last year about Crocs getting sucked into escalator belts but honestly had not really thought anything of it since I usually either hold my kids on the escalator or lift them onto the step. But yesterday my mom took Grace to the mall and held her hand as they stepped onto an escalator. Thank God she was holding her because Grace immediately started yelling as they stepped on that the escalator had her foot...my mom grabbed her arms and pulled her free. Thankfully she wasn't injured (just terrified) but this is what was left of her Croc...

I just wanted to share our experience of what happened. It was one of those things I heard of happening but never thought it could happen to us. Now, looking at other stories online, we were very lucky that she wasn't injured as other kids have lost toes or had their feet mangled.

Please just keep a close eye on your kids on escalators, especially if they are wearing Crocs!

WOW..Thank god she is ok...:grouphug:

I will show this to DD and DH.. Thanks for the photo

Now that is really scary!! I had never considered the possibility of something like that happening. Thank you for sharing!!

That is scary! I had not heard of any problems with crocs on escalators until now. I absolutely despise those things. I will walk tons of stairs before getting on one. I rember being a kid and seeing a story on the news about a boy whose pant leg got caught in one and he was injured really bad. I guess that story scarred me for life!

I had also heard news stories about this but didn't give them much attention. Last week, while on vacation, DS (9) was infront of me on an escalator and suddenly he started yelling. His crock was being eaten by the escalator. It chewed through the front of his crock and knicked three of his toes. His nail on his big toe was torn. It was a painful experience as well as scary for him. A security guard approached us as we got off the escalator and offered some first aid. Also while filing an incident report for the place we were visiting, he told me that in the past month there had been 3 other incidents involving crocks. While crocks feel great on the feet, we will not be replacing ours.

I just wanna say I wear crocs and love them and though I don't doubt this problem, any footwear can be caught like this. I hate to think of someone in flip flops that get caught. Perhaps because the crocs fit a little looser the kids are standing too close to the back of the step.

I am a nervous escallator rider too and always watch where I put my foot. Those things are wicked and will suck anything down they can. :scared:

While I am sure this is a scary thing I would think that none of this would happen if people riding on the escalator actually picked up their feet when getting to the last step and not letting the step "glide" them to the non moving portion. I have always had a fear of escalators and back in the 60's way before Crocs I had a sandal (the tip where the toes are) catch on the last step. It scared me enough to know to always pick my feet UP!! I don't think we can blame the Crocs for this happening...it is the manner in which we get off/on the escalator.

I agree. About 12-13 years ago I had a similar thing happen on an escalator in atlanta,ga on vacation. I don't remember what shoes I was wearing but it definitely wasn't crocs that long ago. There must be something that can be done to prevent the escalators from sucking everything in

So glad you child was not hurt!
This is not the first time I have read about this - I have always been afraid of escalators and have trained the kids since they were little to hop over or step over and not to ride off the escalator. I also to this day glance at everyone's shoe laces as they are getting on, just a habit.

I was at the mall with DD on Tuesday night, she wears the Athens flip flops as do I and she was reminding me to pick up my feet since I had told her the story of the Crocs being eaten by the escalator.

I think because they are so squishy that it is easy for them to get pulled into the escalator teeth.

I'm glas she wasn't hurt.

I hate escalators and practically jump off of them. I will take the stairs any chance I get.

I'm glad she wasn't hurt! I now make DD stand right in the center of the step. And, she always jumps off at the end. It is so scary though!

When this happened to my son last week, we were in the middle of the escalotor ride down. He was standing on the right side of the step near the side. It was there that the crock was grabbed by the escalator and eaten. Everyone in our immediate family has crocks and we love them....they are so comfortable. Just never imagined this would happen to us.

Wow. I am so glad she is okay! And I will definitely be extra careful whenever I am wearing crocs! I wonder what it is about the crocs that make them so susceptible to getting eaten by escalators?

Wow, I have never heard of this and it really is scary. Especially if you have a little croc wearer with you. I'll be careful myself from now on but I'm going to mention something about this to my family. I'd sure hate for a little one to be hurt this way. Thanks for the heads up.

ETA: I forgot to mention that I'm glad your dd is ok! :)

I think it is that they are so light weight. BUT this does not just happen to Crocs!! Many people have had their shoes get caught but because the material is harder it does not grab on as much or as easily.

It is NOT the Crocs that are dangerous...the ESCALATORS are extremely dangerous

This happened to DD today , the manager blamed the shoes ,my DD for the way she was standing[he did not even see her]and said the escalator was ok , asked him if he was an engineer or a store manager , he said he got extensive training in the escalators with his job as manager:rotfl2:
Luckily with them being loose fitting she was able to pull her foot out the back as the strap was over the front, she was upset and shaking with fright , and all this manager was interested in was blaming her the shoe manufacturer and any one else except the escalator or his store .
