I am a crock pot cooking mama!
I have a few--both tiny (for dips or sauces) & up to 6 qts
I only use it on non flammable surfaces--the porcelain drain board.
I've never used it under hanging cupboards or other such.
My fave cp is a Corning, oval 6 qt. This cp is a plain 'low high auto' model.
In this Corning model you can actually use the removeable pot on the stove top--I like this feature when browning meats before putting them into the cp, not necessary, but we like the added flavor.
Not all CorningWare cpots are made this way!
Both DSis & I have a 'automatic' Rival, oval 6 qt, too.
I use it when I am going to be around the house. You can't just turn on the 'warm' temp by itself, it has to run the cycle. Both DSis & I don't use these cpots too much. I understand the automatics are better, now.
I still use 'old faithful', a 5 qt Rival, non-removeable crock
I do use the cp to keep food warm at big family gatherings.
We use ours to keep mashed potaoes warm, or corn on the cob; ribs; pulled pork etc.
For us the 'keep warm', working independently feature, is
very important.
No, I don't know if I've ever used a cream soup making things in the cp
