I can cook just about anything (I come from a long line of big southern women who cook with lard), but I've never cooked a roast in a crock pot. Only a pressure cooker.

So tell me if this sounds right. I followed my mom's instructions.

I bought a 3 lb roast, and had to cut it in half because I have two small crockpots. I know... But I floured and browned them in a hot skillet, then put one in each crockpot, with some sliced onions and about 1/2 cup water, salt and pepper. My potatoes were spongy, so I left them out, and I hate carrots, and mushroom crap. I turned them on low at about 9:30, and will check on them at about 6am.

Will I ruin it? Or are crockpots dummy proof?

It's not too late for me to save them if anyone has any ideas!

The only thing different I would suggest is more water.

You may want to try asking this question on the Cooking, Crafting, & Scrapping Forum, they may be able to give you more information.

6 am! Are you eating dinner that early, or is it for work? (potluck)

That sounds fine...i may have added more water, but other than that sounds fine with me.

I agree with what others have said about more water. I also add a package of Au Jus mix (found in the same place as package gravy) because it makes it juicier.

I keep looking at this thread title quickly and my eyes are seeing:

Now back to your regularly scheduled cooking lesson.........

I think 9 hours in a crock pot, the roast will make a great shredded beef for sandwiches...

I buy a chuck roast, cut it in small pieces, trim fat, add beef broth and lipton soup mix, and some water,a bottle of pepperocinis, and 6 hours later I take two forks and just start shredding the cooked beef, then place the beef and peppers on a good hard roll to serve, sometimes I throw cheese wiz on top too!!

I was just about to post the exact same thing!:p

I have tried and tried and tried to make dinners in a crock pot, especially in softball season when there is no time to make decent dinners. They never turn out to taste like anything edible at all. I guess I am a crock pot dropout!

Beef Stroganof in the crock pot.

stew beef - as much or little as you want
2 cans cream of mushroom soup

put in crock pot, leave it all day

when you get home, add 8 oz sour cream and 2 beef boullion packets

serve over noddles

I don't usually add too much water to my crock pot roasts, I find the cooking creates a lot of condensation.

I found lots of great recipes for the crockpot on www.recipezaar.com My fave roast one is called To Die For Roast.

It is
1 packet of french onion dressing mix
1 packet of italian dressing mix
1 packet of ranch dressing mix
add roast,
cut up potatoes (I put the potatoes in the bottom of the roast)
You mix all the mixes up together and then sprinkle over the potatoes, add the roast sprinkle the rest over the top.
I never add water (when I did it was floating in it because of the natural juice/water in the roast. you can add carrots, parsnips etc, but we prefer just potatoes. It is yummy and the whole dinner is done at once. We put it on around 11 am on low and by 6pm it is done.

Hope it works for you.

Does your grocery store sell Adolph's meat marinade? Here is what I do and it's the most wonderful roast I have ever had. The roast is so flavorful and tender...

Here is what I do...

I remove about 80% of the fat on the roast (you know that thick piece~ gross). I realize that you need some fat to give it flavor. I season the meat (salt and pepper), cover in flour and brown on all sides with a little vegetable oil. I add chopped onions, fresh garlic and celery while I'm browning the meat. After that, I mix 1.5 packets of the meat marinade with water (about 1.5 cups). I put the browned meat in the crock pot and pour the marinade mixture over top of it. Set it on high or low, depending on how much time you have, low is best though. I've got to have carrots with it, so about 2 hours before it's done, I add the carrots. You can also make a gravy with the meat marinade after the roast is done. That's it!

Of course, you've got to have my creamy smooth mashed potatoes and steamed green beans with it. It's to die for...

I can cook anything in the crock pot and it is delish. It has never failed me yet. I sprinkled the roast with Emeril's seasoning and everyone is a happy camper around here.
