Went to Costco to return something today and got 61. in cash back. Stuck it in my jeans pocket, and headed over to BJ's to grocery shop. While picking up some bread, I dropped the $ out, but didn't realize it. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a worker look at me , look around quick, and stuff some cash in his pocket. I looked at him thinking, some poor person has dropped their cash and this guy's got it. I walked out of the aisle and two minutes later figured I better check the cash in my pocket, not thinking at all that it would've fallen out. All I've got in there are my cards, change, and some lint....checked the other pocket...checked coat pockets...starting to freak out a bit now. Since I wasn't carrying a purse and didn't stop anywhere else in between, it was a safe bet that the worker had picked up my cash. I went back to the section where I had seen him, and he was there. I wasn't 100% sure everything was as I thought it, so I said something like, "I just dropped some $ over here". I figured if he was an honest person, he would've said, "I did find some cash...how much was it?" My answer would've confirmed it was mine. But instead, he says, "Where, lets go look for it". I say he found it, and he looks at me blankly. I then straight out tell him I saw him pocket it, so he pulls it out of his pocket, and mumbles that he was going to hand it in to his manager later. Yeah, right. Even if he was truly innocent and didn't see me drop it, when I said I lost $, he was going to help me "look" for it. Thank goodness I saw him stuff it in his pocket, or I'd be SOL. I know its partly my fault for dropping it, but come on.... I stepped aside and count it after he handed it to me, to make sure it was actually my cash, in the exact increments I had, and it was. I am not a perfect person, but this seems blantantly dishonest to me, and it left me feeling uneasy.

I'm glad you got your cash back - I'm frankly surprised that he didn't try to lie his way out of having stolen it!

That would bother me, too. Times are tough, but c'mon, the guy had a job at least so he wasn't starving. It's sad that some people don't have a conscience that would tell them to do the right thing. But I do think that most people are still honest when it comes to something like your situation.

Yes, dishonesty is everywhere. I was having lunch with my DD...she attends a Catholic School. I had $100, 2 $50 dollar bills in my pocket I was going to go grocery shopping with it after lunch. Yes, I know, I was not as careful as I should have been with it. It must have fallen out of my pocket when I paid for lunch, when I went grocery shopping, I did not have it in my pocket. Charged the groceries and went right back to the school and asked the office if the cash had been turned in. All I got back was one $50 dollar bill.
So much for honesty...and at a faith based school. :confused3

OP, glad you got your money back!

i lost $100 about 6 weeks ago between a store checkout and the parking lot. i had put it in my jeans pocket, and didn't realize it was gone until several hours later at home and no, the money was never turned in at the store. i hope whoever found it needed it more than i did. i work very hard EVERY day at far less than minimum wage as an independent contractor, so it took me a long time to make that money. i know how you feel, OP, and i'm glad you got your money back. did you report that guy to management? i would bet he's shown on a security camera picking up and pocketing your money.

I am really really glad that you got it back! And I am also thankful that you were in the right place at the right time to get it back. I agree if you had not seen him, he would not have admitted it. I am glad he did admit it though!

Can I share something positive? There are good people in the world! I go to Dunks On Fridays & Mondays (the rest of the week I make my own coffee) and I always pay with 2 one dollar bills. Last Monday I accidentally gave the drive thru lady a twenty and a one instead of two ones, and went I went by on Friday, she had put it aside for me! She held it for a week! I never would have known! I thought I had lost a 20! I had no idea where! So there are still good honest people out there, and I am sorry the kid that found your money was going to rip you off. PS I gave her a big ti[, and wrote a thank you letter to her manager!

That worker sure had a big pair to actually take the money while you were standing there!

I remember finding a money bag in the seat part of a grocery cart. The person who had it must have set it in there while they were loading their groceries but forgot to take it out when they returned the cart. I turned it in to the service desk and can't imagine keeping it.

Older DS and I were up at his new middle school just before school started when they let us come up and check out the locker, find the classes and meet some of the teachers. We walked out of the building through the main doors, which are really 2 sets separated by a larger vestibule area (the same width as the entrance area).

We walk out the second set (exiting to the outside) and DS bends down and picks up a bill on the ground. I thought it was a $1 but it turned out to be a $100 bill. Sitting on the ground a short distance away are some MS girls and there are people walking towards their cars and all over. No one seems to be looking for the money and we have no idea where it came from.

So I contacted the office and asked if anyone had come in reporting lost cash. She said no, and asked everyone in the office. They all said no. I told her that we had found money outside the school and if anyone contacted her about it, to please give them my cell number (this way I would be able to identify if it was really them...reporting a single $100 bill loss).

No one has ever contacted me and I speak to the office person often. I guess whoever lost it didn't know where and never thought about the school, or a parent gave it to a kid for supplies and the kid never realized it was gone until too late.

I don't know what else I could have done but report it, since there was no one obviously looking for it. It was in plain sight on the ground and I'm sure several people walked around it.

At least he fessed up.

But if he hadn't, I'd be making security pull tapes.

Someone dropped a 20 at MK once and I knew exactly which family as they were sitting next to us at the not so scary halloween parade. I so wanted to find them, but the crowd scattered so quickly they were nowhere to be found.

We kept it as there was literally nothing that could be done.

My DS lost his wallet at school. He had $40 in it and when it wasn't turned in to the office that day, we figured that whoever found it kept the money. Several days later a student turned it into the office with all of the money inside. I guess the boy struggled with what to do for several days before doing the right thing. My ds goes to a faith based school.

But instead, he says, "Where, lets go look for it". I say he found it, and he looks at me blankly. I then straight out tell him I saw him pocket it, so he pulls it out of his pocket, and mumbles that he was going to hand it in to his manager later. Yeah, right.

:eek:He would have NEVER fessed up had you not pushed the issue. "Where, let's look for it" Sneaky loser.

That employee would have lost his job over $61 if that had been me. I would have marched right to management and filed a complaint. He should not be working in retail with that thief attitude of his:sad2:

Glad you got your $$ back, LUCKY you!:yay:

Times are HARD for many people and he did not steal it, he picked it up off the floor. I have no idea what the store/employee policy is........
I am not siding with him, just saying that he did not take it from a purse or anything. Yes, still a loser though..........
But when asked, he should have said YES, instead of deception! They say what goes around comes around............Karma BITES!!
Again, just glad you got your money!:cheer2:

Just wanted to post a good experience we had a few years ago. My mom and I were driving down to Florida and had stopped at a Perkins. She pulled out some cash when the bill came and didn't realize she had dropped a $100 bill under the table. We had gone to the restroom and the waitress came running in a minute later. She seemed genuinely relieved to see that we were still there. It was so nice to see that there are still honest people out there. :) And the waitress got an additional tip.

....not that I profess to be a 'holier-than-thou' person, but finding money in the middle of a busy store as opposed to finding money in, let's say, an empty parking lot or on the street are two different things. If he was truly honest about turning it in, wouldn't he have done so like, IMMEDIATELY??? Especially, given the fact that there are a lot of shoppers there, chances are SOMEONE was shopping and obviously lost it....don't worry about his impudence - what goes around, comes around....glad you got your money back, though...:thumbsup2

I could see your point about him not stealing it because he picked it up off the floor if nobody was around but the OP says that she saw him bend down and pick it up out of the corner of her eye. Therefore, he and she were standing there together long enough for the money to drop out of her pocket and for him to look around and pick it up. I consider that stealing. Now, maybe I have it wrong and the money fell out of her pocket before he came into the aisle so he just figured that someone else had dropped. But then, I would have expected him to atleast say "Excuse me, did you drop this cash?" I would also hope that whomever he asked would have been honest enough to say "yes" if they really did and "no" if they hadn't.

I also agree with the poster who said that she would have told the manager about it.

I'm glad the OP got their $$ back, but it amazes me that so many people just stuff money into their pockets along with other stuff. If the money were in a wallet or purse it would be harder to drop onto the floor, for someone else to pick up.

Glad you story ended up a happy ending. Mine involves $500.00 that I am being cheated out of. My guess is I won't be getting it back though.

Not too long ago we had to have a new driveway put in since ours was really in bad shape. A local company in Naperville called O'Shea Asphalt, Concrete, and Brick put our new drive way in. (I warned Bob Doyle I would bad mouth him ever chance I got so people out my way beware of this man)

Any way. He told us that if we needed extra gravel there would be an additional small fee for that. Well it ended up where we did. He had one man here tearing up the driveway, and the man told me the measurements of where the gravel was needed. Mind you the driveway is all torn up and Bob calls me tells me it will be $900.00 more for gravel. When I questioned him as to why it was so expensive he told me it was for the gravel and labor.

He later told my DH out of the goodness of his heart he would knock off $100.00. I called around and got several estimates from landscaping places and all told me gravel with delivery for the amount I needed was $300.00 tops. So that means Bob charged us for $500.00 for the man to take 10 extra minutes with the bobcat to spread out the remaining gravel. Same man also told me he only got $40 for the entire day.

I so far contacted BBB, and Lisa Madagan, and both more or less have given me the impression that I might as well just eat the $500.00 extra. Who knows maybe I won't have to, but we will see. So yes, there is plenty of dishonest people out there. Bob did even more but this is very long already.

He did steal it--unless you have a different definition of stealing.

A customer doesn't "steal" until they leave a store with unpaid merchandise.

That employee pocketed found cash and then returned it.

If he hadn't stolen it, I would see no need for him to just voluntarily give his own cash to the customer to shut him up.
