It appears they filmed less episodes this season. Last season they filmed 25 episodes. I have a feeling they spent some of their budget on the Spin-off cast and filming on location in San Francisco.

Okay, I'm watching CBS right now and I missed the first 5 minutes. There is a funeral and they leave and get called away to a case, but Hotch does not go - he stays with his son. Is it his wife that died and how did she die? Why won't Hotch go with them and how did his nose get cut?

Last night I saw an episode with a pig farmer and homeless people which ended with the Reaper pointing a gun at Hotch in his apartment and then a gun shot rang out.

I cannot figure out which episodes are current and which ones came before the others. Help!

Ok, Hotch's wife was killed by The Reaper. He appeared in about 3 episodes. The first one, Hotch was summoned to a dying police chiefs house who told him he stopped trying to catch The Reaper, a serial killer, because they made a deal with each other. If the police chief stopped trying to catch him, The Reaper would stop killing. They both kept to their bargin. However, the chief was dying and quickly. So he told Hotch that he knew once he died, The Reaper would consider this the end of the agreement and start killing again. So this put the burden on Hotch to find The Reaper. Sure enough, once the chief dies, he begans killing again. He goes on a rampage. To make a long story short, he contacts Hotch and offers him the same deal, he would stop killing if Hotch would stop pursuing him. Hotch turned him down. The Reaper continued to kill. They caught him finally, imprisoned him and he escaped. One night Hotch came home and The Reaper was in his apartment. He attacked Hotch ( but I don't think he wanted to kill him, it's been a while since I have seen it). I think this is why Hotch had the wound on his nose. They decided to put put Hotch's wife and son in protective custody and hide her from the Reaper. Long story short (again) The Reaper finds Hailey, calls Hotch and lets him know that he has found her. He then shoots and kills her while he is on the phone with Hotch.
Of course, Hotch feels guilty and begins to question whether or not he should stay in the BAU or quit and take care of Jack since he feels responsible for Hailey's death. If he had accepted The Reapers offer, Hailey would still be alive. So he stayed behind from the case to try and figure out what is best for his son. Whew...hoped that helped. And I hope it's accurate. I'm going by memory. I believe they killed The Reaper last week. Can't remember how they found him though.

It IS on 3 channels. That's why it has been so confusing. What is worse is that they cut this particular storyline up into different seasons.

The first 2 episodes which you already saw, were from last year. They show on A&E and on ION and rerun constantly.

The other episodes ONLY showed on CBS, as they are from this season. Unfortunately, they already re-ran. (Is that a word? ) You missed a couple episodes in between, (which CaliforniaDreamin filled in,) and you saw the climax the last two weeks. The end of this particular story line pretty much ended last night.

Okay, I've watched a lot of FBI interviews & over the last few days because of the car bomb attempt here. I have yet to see one agent that even remotely looks like these:

Well, they wore suits like Hotch, but didn't look as good as him.

There was one female bomb/security expert being interviewed by Geraldo who certainly did have the drive, ambition and intelligence of Prentiss when she first came on the team, or probably of that mean, blonde supervisor woman, Stauss, in her younger days.

This one is kind of creepy. My DD just graduated from FSU in Tallahassee last Saturday. So many times, I cautioned her to be careful. The FSU campus is surrounded by a less than stellar area. Seems a bit too real.

OK, I've been peeking in on this thread the past couple of weeks cause DH & I have somewhat picked up the show on A&E. We had watched the first few seasons and then got off of it for awhile. So apparently I need someone to seriously catch me up. Particularly on Hotch and his family. When we stopped Hotch was getting divorced. Now she's dead

The trouble with seeing it on A&E is they run it on a loop and if you wait 2 weeks you'll see the same episode come around. Its a bother watching it that way.

So if somebody would catch me up I'd appreciate it.

No particular episode in my case, but a coupe of yrs. ago we had police officer killed on our street so that put us off on Criminal Minds until recently. As much as we loved Garcia the show's tone was just too dark for us to stomach for awhile after that.

What happened to Hotch's wife is part of this season's story line with the Reaper. So, even if you kept waiting for A&E or Ion, they wouldn't show the missing episodes from this season for a while.

It can be frustrating because all of the past seasons, if they had a story line about a particular team member, like Garcia or Reid, they usually wrapped it up the following week - and it was in the same season. You wouldn't expect to tune in and suddenly the show has become like, Lost, where you had to have been following along to know what's been happening. This season, they changed the format.

For Hotch, his story line jumps a bit, and the bulk of it happened on CBS this season. And they have rerun all those episodes already.

So, I'll just fill in the Hotch & Haley part:

Hotch & Hailey have been divorced for a while. He's living alone in an apartment now. Hotch put his job first over his family. But through bits & pieces of different episodes, Hotch would take Haley & Jack back in a split second, if she would come back.

The last episode which reruns on A&E featuring the Reaper is Part 2 of the gruesome "pig farm" episode. You see a guy in a mask, (The Reaper,) at the end of the show appear behind Hotch as he's at his apartment taking a drink. He shoots at Hotch.

Cut to: The first episode of this season (on CBS, Hotch & the Reaper get into a huge fight. The Reaper tortures Hotch & stabs him several times but makes sure he doesn't stab in places that would kill Hotch. Then he actually takes him to the hospital, to make sure Hotch doesn't die in the apartment.

The Reaper doesn't kill Hotch because he wants him to emotionally suffer instead of being dead. He targets Hotch's wife & son instead. He won't go after them if Hotch (and the team) don't go after the Reaper.

Of course, Hotch being Hotch, he can't go for a deal like that. Instead, Hotch has Haley & Jack put in protective custody/witness protection, where they will be living as other people, hiding away in some other area of the country, until Hotch can catch the Reaper.

They don't know how long it will take to catch the Reaper, or how long Haley & Jack will have to hide away. Hotch promises Haley that once this is all over, he will spend the rest of his life making it up to her.

The Reaper, was a computer expert. Somehow he set it up that his computer would alert him if anyone ever did a web database search on the alias name he has been using while hiding away. The alarm goes off. He knows that must mean Hotch & the team are on to him. He sets off to go kill Haley & Jack before Hotch can get him or get to Haley & Jack.

We are down to the final three episodes. The season finale is rumored to be a cliffhanger.

Next week, we find out if Criminal Minds will be picked up for fall. It's at the top of the ratings for Wed nights, so unless there is an idiot in charge of programming, it should be picked up.

We will also find out if the spinoff, Criminal Minds 2.0, is going to air.
