"He's doing it for the kids.
Fresh from wrapping up work on the pilot of the Criminal Minds spin-off, Oscar winner Forest Whitaker tells Jam that he's doing the tentatively titled Minds 2.0 because the gig allows him time with his kids.

"They approached me at the right time -- I have two children who are 11 and 13, and I want to see them," says Whitaker, whose The Last King of Scotland role earned him the Academy Award Best Actor plum in 2007.
He adds that he doesn't find the commitment of doing a series stifling and vows that it won't mean the end of his movie career.
"I'll do whatever. I'll do a video. I'll go direct. I just like to create. And I'm having a great time on the show," he says. "I won't do as many movies. I'll do one a year; I'll try not to do two. So one movie a year -- that's what most of my peers do anyway."
Like most of its CBS procedural brethren, Minds 2.0 is set to be introduced via backdoor pilot in May, and Whitaker assures fans, both of the original and prospective converts, that this new group of profilers is more "clandestine" than viewers are used to following.
"Our group, we are behavioral analysts, but I don't follow rules. My character, Sam Cooper, came back to this unit only if he could operate without rules."
The Criminal Minds spin-off is Whitaker's first series to front, after stints on the long-running medical drama ER and The Shield. He follows scores of movie stars before him who've made the transition to the small screen, including Kiefer Sutherland (24), Charlie Sheen (Two and a Half Men), and Chris O'Donnell (NCIS: Los Angeles).
CBS recently announced that it's debuting 11 drama pilots for 2010, and the Criminal Minds spin-off is just one of the barrage of procedurals that is among the list."
