Agreed.

OK. Ummm. I'll bite. What does a mosque have to do with 9/11?

Um did you know that the meetings of the terrorists were held at Mosques? Not all are like that I know. However in showing the "peace" that they all preach be sensitive to those of us that had to walk through the pieces of our friends and family as a result of the zealots from this religion.

I have to say, the Canadian media's been having fun with this one.

All this fuss over a Mosque/Community center, located two blocks away from "ground zero", in a neighbourhood with a large Muslim population, who've been overwhelming the capacity of the other neighbourhood Mosque (coincidentally only 4 blocks away from the WTC site). The other Mosque has been there for years. There's talk of making the new Mosque an interfaith community center and memorial.

You know, American Muslims died in the WTC bombings, too. http://islam.about.com/blvictims.htm

Sometimes we look at American media and think you're all bonkers.

There are still too many raw feelings to make light or "fun" of anything regarding 9/11. I really think this post is in poor taste. Sorry but this American does not agree with your point.

the flight attendant acted in a swift and brave manner. she did the right thing by removing the child from the mother. they were on an airplane, it's not like she could have headed for the border with this kid and permantly kept her away from its natural mother. she simply was trying to get the mother under control so she could collect herself and be a better parent for the rest of the trip. we as mothers have all been there at one point in time when we are on the brink of losing it...i'm gonna give the mom the benefit of the dought and say she had hit her breaking point...it's never easy dealing with babies on plains BUT this was definitely the right thing for the flight attendant to do and CPS should always be involved in any suspected child abuse. like i said , i would love to think this was an isolated rage out but you never know.

while I feel a swat on the butt is fine for some major offenses & sometimes a small slap to the hands, but NOBODY should ever slap a child or infants face!!!

There was an additional article in the paper today with more detail. I'm paraphrasing here, but the Slap Happy Mom said something like, "Sometimes when she's crying, slapping her is the only way to make her stop." :scared1::headache::eek:

I've got a newsflash for you sister......13 month old BABIES cry. It's part of their job description. It may be annoying, but it's par for the course. SLAPPING them (on what appears to be a regular basis from her rather chilling words) is not a normal reaction, nor is is acceptable. You need some Xanax and parenting classes. The baby is normal. You are not.

Maybe the FA temporarily took the baby out of fear some other parents on that plane just might give Little Miss Smackdown a taste of her own medicine. The FA did the right thing. The article went on to say that the father mentioned he and the mother have had many disagreements about her hitting the baby. Dear lord! Just how often does she whack that kid?????

As many have pointed out, if the witch would slap a BABY in public, what in God's name does she do to that precious child in private? :rolleyes1

No one is making fun of the attack, they are making fun of the over-reaction to a place of worship/community center.

Some of the people are worthy of making fun of!

Some folks are still in a lot of pain regarding the unprovoked attack on our country on 09/11/01.... making fun of their feelings is disgusting. If you think it's funny or feel it's okay to make fun of someone else's raw pain, I feel really sorry for you.

As to the actual topic of the thread---OP, I really do not understand how you are making the leap from someone stepping in to help a child who, by all initial appearances is in true danger, by holding her for a few minutes while one of the parents z9the one not losing it) gets into a position he can then safely take care of the child (out of his seat and away from his wife) is in any way going to infringe on your future rights.
1) The leap was made based on the statements of the police that the FA 'took custody' of the child. You see, people hold Princess Wigglypants all the time, but they don't have custody of her.

2) How was the child in 'true danger'? She was slapped. There was in no mortal danger.

Parents have a right to parent but the right of a child not to be beaten by the parent (and with multiple slaps to multiple areas and a visible bruise what was happening could look like that in the moment) supersedes the right of the parents.
1) A couple slaps to the legs and one to the face does not a beat down make.

2) The FA does not have teh legal authority to 'supercede the parent's rights' in this instance.
In this case, the right of the father to parent in a non violent way is also as important as that of the mother's to parent in her fashion. If the FA had pulled the child from the mother, told both parents they were not to leave their seats and kept the child in her custody during the rest of the flight I could maybe see your point, but in this case I am floored that anyone fails to see that this was handled with as much grace and tact as could be hoped for by anyone.
Regardless of the length of time that you take custody of a child against the will of the parents and without legal authority, you still are guilty of kidnapping.

I love, love New York, but I love my freedoms more. Including freedom of religion.

That is why I and millions of us support the building of any denomination church in and around the area.
:thumbsup2

Did you know that the meetings of the terrorists also happened at Unos and other restaurants? I hope that they put an end to restaurants being built in lower Manhattan.

Also, if you are angry at a few zealots, one wonders why you are taking it out on an entire religion; a religion that over one fifth of the entire world belongs to.

Not even an adult! No one has the right to put their hands in anyone's face:mad:

This is a direct quote from this link...

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100818/ap_on_re_us/us_flight_attendant_baby

The federal laws that give crew members broad power to ensure safety can be invoked in situations like the one that unfolded on the flight, said Jerry Sterns, a San Francisco attorney specializing in aviation cases.

I think that answers the original question -does a flight attendant have the authority to take custody of a child during the flight.

seems like it doesn't it

My question is...how is what CandyMandy or Magpie posted (or even posted *about*) *political*???

Quite honestly yes, I used to work in the emergency room and dog bites were seen in all areas of the body...even the very top of the head which you really wouldn't think of an area that could even GET bit. So yes, it's quite possible.

As for "slapping my daughter around"........
Here's your *perfect parent* badge. Wear it proudly, K?

I'd offer to hold or temporarily care for any age child so the parent could get a grip. I'm glad the FA held the baby for a bit but I'm peeved that it's reported as "Taking custody". Why is it ok for the news to have reported it this way?
I'm ok with the family questioned after landing and I'm ok with follow up on the family after they get home.

No, it doesn't bother me that baby fell asleep in dad's arms. Most families I know have one parent better, sometimes MUCH better at calming the children and getting them to sleep. I don't think it's all that weird, awful or even unusual.

And this is exactly where the "it takes a village" should come into play. An offer to give temporary respite to a tired frustrated parent should be common sense.

This. Absolutely 100% this. She did not take custody of the baby, that is my issue. Moot I know, and I'm a bad parent so I should shut up now. LOL
I think he issue for others here is the legality of lay people taking custody of other peoples children for any reason.

You are extremely rude. I find it amazing that one of your tags brags about slapping your child. Its almost like you take joy in seeing how much you can provoke people.

I am glad you weren't my mother.

And if I were sitting by you on a plane and you slapped your child in the face, I would DEFINITELY say something to you myself!

I am not a perfect parent, nor do I have a perfect child but I would never dream in a million years of slapping her in the face. I waited too long for her and tried too hard to have her, and there is no reason not to try to be the best mother I possibly could be. Slapping her in the face and then bragging about it on a message board is not that way to do that.

The mods must not consider it political, but I'm surprised about that, considering what they've considered political in the past.

But, I considered it political especially since that day or the day before there was a big hoopla about the president's speech concerning the mosque.
