credit card use - do you always tap?

Interesting. I'll have to sign up for the app to see I guess!

Well, there is really no “swipe” here anymore; it’s tap or insert the chip card and enter the pin. All our cards have been chip-and-pin for many years now. I rarely use my credit cards other than on-line but I do use my bank card for absolutely everything and it’s always tap unless the purchase is over the spending limit. We’ve purposely set it very low for security.
The only stores around here that I can think of that still have 'swipe' as an option are No Frills/Independent Grocer. Their machines have tap, insert and swipe - talk about overkill :rotfl2:

I've never seen a machine that's tap only or tap and insert only. A smart business isn't going to do tap only because, as mentioned here, not every card is tap capable yet.

Ours are - every single one. Bank/debit cards and credit cards. Absolutely no need for swipe. It's literally been years since chip-and-pin was incorporated into everything. I guess there's no harm in the machines still having the swipe option but it would never be used by anybody except a tourist who's card doesn't have a chip and that's pretty unlikely in most places.

I can name three cards in my wallet right now that are swipe-only: my bank ATM card, my Macy's card, and my Kohl's card.

Merchants were incentivized to move to EMV terminals October 1st 2015.

As long as a EMV capable card is tapped or the chip is used the card issuer is liable for fraud. If the merchant still allows credit card swipes for EMV capable cards then the business is liable for fraud.

It has been almost 8 years. Merchants that have not upgraded are playing with fire.

Edited to add:
EMV does not apply to store cards or even American Express or Discover, though those two have their own fraud rules that require modern card terminals.

All my bank issued credit/debit cards have a chip and I tap If the merchant’s device supports it.

A few store credit cards arę swipe only. Kohl’s, Wawa, Macy’s, etc.

And only one of mine is tap capable.

I'm a tapper!! Apple Pay everything I can actually, especially at gas pumps.

Credit card skimmers are so rampant.

Tap where available, then dip/insert. Swipe is a last resort only if that's the only thing available, since it is the least secure. Merchants pay different credit card processing fees based on the way the transaction is done, and tap to pay often has slightly higher fees than inserting the chip, which is why some merchants are hold outs and do not have tap available. Back on 2020, only one of my cards had contactless capability. In the wake of the pandemic, I requested new cards from all the others so that I had contactless as an option regardless of the card I wanted to use. Now everything in my wallet is contactless other than I guess my Kohl's card.

FWIW, I started a new job in November. The card they issued me then was chip (not tap). I had to replace it this month because the chip was failing. New card is chip, no tap also.

I'm in Canada, our banking system is different. Swipe is on the way out. Most merchants have only tap and insert. Ones that have swipe are old technology here.

I'm a tapper.

When I stop for gas I just pull my money clip out and tap that without even pulling my cc out of it.

I don't like to carry a pocket full of stuff so I am also a HUGE fan of Apple Pay, I just tap my phone.

How is tap more 'secure' then sliding/swiping/inserting your card? When those functions are all done by one machine, what is different about how it reads your info?
