Creating a comfortable guest room. What to put in it to make it more homey for people

I'm just putting the final touches on a guest room. One thing that I don't think was mentioned was a small fan. We have central a/c, but our weather here is unpredictable, so I decided they may need a fan (also for white noise). My first real guests in this room (not family) are coming for the fourth of July! I appreciate this thread! :)

My MIL always puts a book by one of my favorite authors in her guest room when I stay with her. It is an extra little gesture of hospitality I really appreciate.

Side note: I have the most amazing MIL. My son and I visit every 3 months when he has his dr. appointments. She always makes us feel so welcome. She has a playroom set up for DS, and everything I could possibly need. She also had a little kitchen area set up upstairs, with a fridge stocked with soda, wine and such, a Kurig, Lots of teas and coffees to choose from, a microwave and some little snacks.

My goal is to be half the hostess she is.

I don't have a guest room myself, but when I stay at my mom's, I had to ask her to put a mirror in the room. Would think that would be a basic item. :confused3

I also would greatly appreciate room to put my stuff in (empty drawer or 2, a shelf, closet space, etc.). I usually have to live out of my suitcase and toiletry bag, lol.

Fresh flowers are a nice touch. If I had a guest room, I'd definitely have flowers and a basket of toiletries for them. :flower3:

I didn't read all of the replies but important things to me are:

Kleenex
Disposable razor
Spare toothbrush/toothpaste
Alarm clock
Plenty of outlets available...power strip if needed
Lamp
Feminine hygiene products under the bathroom sink iif you have female guests...they don't want to have to ask the host for those items in an emergency!
Extra pillow & lightweight blanket
Small fan
Drinking glass for water

Coffee pot! Didn't see that on anyone's lists. Some people NEED coffee before speaking to another human being. :rotfl2:

We have, bathrobe(s), slippers and a towel warmer, small fridge, electric tea kettle, microwave, toaster, dish set for 4, luggage rack, king-sized bed with additional trundle underneath, sitting chair, table for two, love seat, TV, DVD player, ipod docking alarm, power strip, "breakfast in bed" style tray table, extra blankets & pillows, iron & ironing board, scissors, tape, paper, toiletries, meds, blow dryer, rollers, curling iron. Breakfast & snack foods, coffee, tea, hot chocolate & mints. We have a window unit AC, ceiling fan and small heater. Also a note with our Wifi info.

We basically have a fully furnished studio apartment and my husband's family uses it often. :rotfl:

I will also put a variety of our DVDs- depending on who's coming. (woman-chick flicks, guy- action, comedy, etc.)

TV
Light that can be turned on/off from bed
Fan (ceiling fan with remote for a double bonus)
WiFi access info if you have WiFi and are willing to let the guest use it
Tissues
Qtips
Toothbrush & toothpaste
feminine products
Tylenol, antacid, stomach stuff, band aids
maybe a travel size deodorant just in case someone forgets
comb/brush
hair dryer
available plug for chargers
bottle of water

-Lamp and digital clock next to the bed so I can tell what time it is if I wake in the night.
-Plenty of storage space for putting away clothes and belongings.
-Something to put my suitcase on so it's not on the floor!
-Hand soap available in the bathroom to wash hands with- bar soap dries my hands out!
-Extra blankets/pillows available
-Wifi information written down for easy connection to the internet.
-Full length mirror
