Cream of mushroom soup

I use canned soup, but I also make my own bechamel.

I was really surprised once when someone said they "made their own cr of mushroom soup" and I discovered they meant white sauce. To me, the two are very different things with very different tastes.

I use them in my potato hot dish....but not much else.

For stroganoff I make my own out of sour cream and mushrooms and seasonings, thinned with beef stock.

DH, however, has a dish from his childhood that he loves...I refuse to make it, but it's spaghetti noodles, mixed with tuna and cream of celery. BLECK!!

 :crazy2: :faint:

I have and I do like mushroom soup but after making a dish with it this last week, I looked at the sodium content :scared1: I couldn't believe how much salt was in it, 900 mg for 1/2 a coup! Maybe I'll look at other brands. It's good in hamburger stroganoff, tuna casserole, even with chicken, yum!

Look at the fat as well.:lmao: I really stopped eating cream soups period. They are just too fatty for me.

Used to like it when I was a kid about 50 years ago. I looked at a can in the grocery store, way too many ingredients that I can't pronounce, way too much sodium. These days if I need a cream sauce, I'll make it from scratch. At least I know what's going into it.

I used to use them quite a bit when I was younger, but then I learned how to actually cook.

You are not alone.

I have *tried* recipe after recipe with this stuff and none of it appeals to me at all. I won't make any recipe that calls for it anymore.

I despise mushrooms and grew up with a mother who told me to just pick them out of things. Anyone else ever try to pick the mushrooms out of Campbell's cream of mushroom soup :sad2:?

As for the other cream soups I cannot recall ever using them to cook. We're not big casserole eaters here. I don't like my food all mixed together like that.

I make a nice homemade bechamel sauce and add mushrooms if necessary. I don't cook with cream of anything out of a can.
YES!

I'm lucky that I learned how to cook decades ago before this "cream of xxx" stuff became popular. (maybe before it was invented)

I don't avoid recipes that call for a can of cream soup - I just substitute a white sauce seasoned how I feel like it that day.

I don't cook with any of that stuff, either, and my kids won't eat food cooked with it. I tried, but they are used to homemade sauces made with milk, flour, and butter. They also won't touch hamburger helper.
