Crazy Kindle Deal

It sounds more like the sales associate who rang up her order was confused. Her receipt should PROBABLY say she owes $99 not $49.

I just got out of bb. They said total price for the kindle will end up being $99 plus tax. The $50 gc goes towards the deposit.

No...she only PAID $50.....she paid $50 for a GC....her receipt says she still owes $49 on the kindle....she uses her $50 GC to pay the $49 ...so only $50 out of pocket

The above quote says she PAID an additional $50 which she did NOT..so she has not PAID $100 overall

Thanks Disney!!! Finally, someone that gets it. My receipt says we owe $50. OUT OF POCKET WAS ONLY $50. Geesh, just trying to pass along a good deal, why all the Debbie Downers???

Just to add, my sister is taking a photo of the receipt and she's gonna send it to me so I can post it. The balance remaining is $50, and she will use the gift card for that.

Maybe because it's not a true deal but a clerical error on the part of the cashier. They're all over this on slickdeals and the comments there are so much less polite than the PPs on this thread have been.

I wouldn't be surprised if they catch the error when you go to claim your kindle. But if they don't, you're one up on Best Buy. This is not the way that the preorder is supposed to work.

I don't think anyone is being a Debbie Downer, they are just explaining the way pre-orders work at BB. If you did get this "good deal" it is because the cashier may have made a mistake and this will be a big YMMV because normally this is not how it works out.

It appears that what you have circle is the gift card transactions. The "original balance" was $0.00. The "transaction amount" is the $50.00 that your sister paid for with her visa card. The "remaining balance" is what is now on the gift card, not what she owes for the kindle.

Oh please take it easy on the OP....that being said...I said it because I just read your receipt..its telling you you preordered the Kindle and that you purchased a $50 gift card and have a balance of $50 on your gift card...you still owe the full amount on the Kindle

That means you have $50 remaining balance on your gift card. You didn't put any money down toward the Kindle, you bought a $50 gift card, in order to reserve a Kindle.

You haven't actually put any money toward the purchase.

Oh, and more bad news...

Best Buy will collect the sales tax on the full $99 sale price when you pay for the kindle. There's no sales tax holiday. The state will require them to collect it.

The line in your receipt that shows $0.00 for sales tax is because gift cards are not taxed.

As others have pointed out, what you have circled is the amount remaining on the gift card.

When you go to claim your kindle you will owe $99. you can pay for $50 of it with the gift card, but you will still owe $49 out of pocket.

I'm not being a Debbie Downer, I'm telling you the truth: you thought you were getting a good deal, but you misunderstood. I'm sorry that it isn't what you would like to hear.

Sillysmom I don't think anyone is trying to be a Debbie Downer, nor unnecessarily cruel to you. We are just trying to point out where the confusion is, so that you will be knowledgeable when you go back to BB regarding what your costs will be and so that no other posters get confused.

By looking at your receipt (and it is slightly hard to read the exact wording) you appear to have been invoiced for a line item for a pre-sale (all that means is that when BB gets their shipment, you already have one earmarked with your name) in the amount of $50. They immediately give you $50 back in the form of a BB gc. So they are not technically holding your money, but have it tied up in a manner you can only use with them.

That is why there is no sales tax (yet) because gc are not taxed. It is just "exchanging" one form of currency (US dollars, through the use of a Visa in your case) for their store specific BB currency.

No where on the receipt is there a line item for the actual cost of the Kindle itself.

The remaining balance at the end of your receipt just shows that the gc they issued you has $50 available on it.

When you pick up the Kindle you will then be charged for the full price plus sales tax (unless for some reason your state wasn't charging sales tax?).

I am sorry that it isn't the deal you thought it was.

Well, it's very obvious reading that reciept that everyone is right. $50 balance remaining on the gift card.

But, in case it helps anyone... I just got the keyboard kindle, 3G, for under $100 including tax. ($139 retail)

I had $42ish in Staples rewards, so I used them to lower the price. And even better, my business spent the original money to earn the rewards :)

OP, sorry it turned out not to be a great deal. Even for $100, you will still love the Kindle, I can't out mine down :cloud9:

or just wait until BB has the buy Kindle 3G get $30 off. That's how I got DH his kindle for close to $100.

Now I'm debating whether I should get Fire or the touchscreen one. :thumbsup2

I assume you got your Kindle by now.....so, was it the deal you thought it was?
