Cranberry & Pineapple Continued.....Again.

The next few days will probably have less detail since we were mainly just running around riding whatever didn’t have too long of a line, but I will try again to hit some of the more interesting details.

Monday 11/22
Monday started with a hearty breakfast at Mimi’s and, really, who doesn’t love a hearty breakfast? We’d signed up for Mimi’s e-club prior to leaving so we also had coupons that they’d emailed us which saved us some cash. Disneyland was opening at 8am and we arrived shortly thereafter. The skies were blue but the air was still cool and there were noticeably more people on Main Street. We took some photos around the hub before it got too busy there and started the day once again with Space Mountain and Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters. We probably should have jumped onto the Matterhorn right away because it was probably the only time that day that it was short enough that we’d consider waiting in it. Instead, we rode Indy as well as picking up FPs for later. We’d never been up Tarzan’s Treehouse, so we did that, too.

The lines were building quickly so we tried to go with only waits under 30 minutes and use FPs when we could. Obviously, we hit PotC and HM but we also took a ride around the entire park on the Disneyland Railroad, which was something we had never done before. I had read about the dioramas along the train route between Tomorrowland and the Main Street station so I really wanted to take the time to see them this trip. It was almost like taking a train through the Museum of Nature and Science. After the train ride, we headed down Main Street and over to California Adventure, where we were seeing equally long lines. Despite his hearty breakfast, we had to stop at the Mission Tortilla Factory so Alex could have a few tortillas to tide him over until lunch. We hit a few rides and picked up some FPs before we were all getting hungry for lunch.

We had lunch at La Brea Bakery in Downtown Disney. The food was good, though a little pricey, but we had a coupon. We sat on the patio and it was probably just on the brink of being comfortable because it was still cool and the heater near our table was not working. Alex had a cheeseburger and fries, Tammy had a tuna sandwich and I had caprese panini sliders with a cup of clam chowder. After lunch, we went back to World of Disney and picked up a couple more souvenirs before heading back to the hotel to rest for a bit. As we were checking out, I saw a book called Disneyland through the Decades which looked pretty good, but all of the copies at the register were pretty dog-eared, so I planned to keep my eyes open for a nice copy.

With the amount of time we’d spent in the parks the previous day, we were definitely feeling it in our feet despite wearing appropriate shoes, so it was nice to put our feet up back at the hotel room. Unfortunately, on this particular day, we got back to find that our room hadn’t been cleaned yet. We were surprised to see that all of our coffee supplies had been replenished, however, so I called the front desk to see what was up. It turns out that the cleaning supervisor makes the rounds first and replenishes the coffee supplies then housekeeping follows later.

We’d only been in the room for a couple of minutes when there was a knock, so we left for a bit so that the room could be cleaned. The weather was still cool and had become a bit cloudy, so rather than sit outside and wait, we went to the arcade and played some games. We also picked up a few more things in the shop as we’d been using our milk and water for coffee every day. When we decided to head back to the room, we were pleased to see that housekeeping was done. We rested for a bit then made some coffee to get us through the rest of the evening before heading back to the parks.

We’d checked the Animation Academy schedule earlier that day and had decided to return for the last session where we’d be drawing Jack Skellington. In the meantime, we rode what we were willing to wait for or what we had FPs for, including what we thought was a pretty long wait for Toy Story Midway Mania. We were surprised by the number of line jumpers on this trip, groups of up to four people cutting through to join the one or two people who’d been holding a place for them somewhere in front of us. Of course, on previous trips, the lines had been much shorter so I guess long lines bring out the worst in people.

We rested in the Animation Courtyard while waiting for our Animation Academy session to begin, having already attended Turtle Talk with Crush on the previous day. Once we were let in, I sat up front with my Jack Skellington hoodie on, but there were plenty of other obvious fans in the room, too. On our previous two trips, a member of our group had scored the animator’s drawing at the end of the session but I wasn’t holding my breath that we’d be so lucky again. As it turned out, the animator didn’t give out her drawing at the end of the session, anyway.

On our way out, we went into Off the Page and I found the Disneyland through the Decades book I’d seen earlier as well as a book about Nightmare Before Christmas. Unfortunately, the NBC books were pretty beat up and they didn’t have any other copies, so I just went with the Disneyland one. For the rest of the night, I was lugging around my new book and our drawings from Animation Academy but we didn’t stay out as late as we had on our first night. The lines didn’t die down as much as we’d hoped, though we did hit a bunch of rides between the time DCA closed and when we left Disneyland, which was probably still after 11pm. We’d even indulged Alex and got on a long line for Space Mountain because he wanted to confirm whether they still did Rockin’ Space Mountain at night, as he’d read online. Unfortunately, after waiting about 20 minutes, there was an announcement that the ride would be down for a while. We assured Alex that we’d try again on another night and got out of line.

Not surprisingly, my feet were sore by the end of the night, but as we were walking back to the hotel, I had another sinking feeling. About two months prior, I’d had the extremely painful experience of my first case of gout. Fortunately, our physician had made a quick diagnosis and wrote me a prescription that took care of the problem quickly. I was starting to feel a similar pain in the same location and was worried that I was having a recurrence. I don’t know if it was the concern about a recurrence or the actual onset, but I slept terribly that night.

Tuesday 11/23

When I woke up on Tuesday, I knew that the gout was back so I immediately called our physician and asked if they could call in the same prescription to the local Walgreen’s. While we waited to hear back, we went to breakfast at Mimi’s and the day continue to prove to be off to a poor start. Not only did the coffee taste old, I was brought the incorrect entrée by a server who was too smug to write down our orders, then he forgot to deduct our coupon. Nothing major, but things were frustrating. After breakfast, we made a quick stop back at the hotel before heading to the parks. As we were waiting at the light to cross Harbor Boulevard, I got a call back from the doctor’s office to let me know that the prescription had been called in.

The Walgreen’s was just over on Katella, so I told Tammy and Alex to go ahead into the parks and I’d go pick up the prescription. As with the walk to Momma Cozza’s, I really misjudged the distance to Walgreen’s and was starting to wonder if I’d ever reach it. I actually reached an intersection and still couldn’t see it, so I was going to sit down and call them to find out how much farther I had to go. Despite how bad the coffee was, I’d apparently drunk enough of it that I needed a bathroom break first. Looking around, the most likely spot to go was a nearby fast food restaurant. After crossing the street, as I was approaching it, I saw the Walgreen’s! It was blocked from view by a gas station so I headed right there instead. I grabbed a bottle of water and went right to the pharmacy, where the pharmacist told me that he was about done with it. I used the bathroom there, then paid less than $5 for the prescription and the water thanks to our prescription plan. I immediately downed a pill, texted Tammy then headed back toward Disneyland.

Tammy had been updating me with what they were up to, which was mainly riding the Astro Orbiters and both setting personal high scores on Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters. I was planning to cut through the Grand Californian to Downtown Disney, but ended up finding the entrance to DCA instead, so I texted them to meet me near the main entrance. On my way, I saw that the line for World of Color FastPasses extended all the way from Grizzly River Run to right across from Soarin’ so I was really glad we’d already seen it and hadn’t had to wait that long for our FPs. We spent a few hours around DCA, riding and collecting FPs and continuing to be surprised by the crowds. Ultimately, my side trip to Walgreen’s only cost me about 1 ½ hours of time in the parks, so it was a small inconvenience in the big scheme of things.

I’d seen Whitewater Snacks in the GCH as I’d passed through, so I suggested we go there for lunch once that time rolled around. We were pleased with the food and it was much less crowded than any counter service dining in DCA. We took our typical afternoon break back at the hotel followed by coffee from the Keurig. We had discussed that, with the increasing crowds and the fact that we’d managed to do so much on Sunday, we should look at doing some things that we normally might not consider since we still had a day and a half. At Disneyland, we stopped in at Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, mainly because it was the first really successful audio-animatronic that the Imagineers had created. It wasn’t riveting, but it was interesting to see.

The first thing we decided to check into back at DCA was Aladdin. We all liked the movie and Alex is a big fan of the Genie, so we figured “why not?” We had no more intention of spending hours staking out a spot for Aladdin than we would have for the fireworks or for Fantasmic, so we just showed up maybe ½ hour before showtime and joined the masses. We got seats in the upper balcony that were just fine for viewing and hearing the show and we all really enjoyed it. Alex’s fondness for the Genie just continued to grow as they had a lot of pop culture references in his jokes. It had started to lightly rain again as we were leaving the theater but we still waited to ride ToT again then stopped in at Disney Animation.

We went through the Sorcerer’s Workshop since we’d done Turtle Talk with Crush and Animation Academy already. This attraction definitely needs better promotion because we had no idea what it was and we had a blast. First, we got to find out which Disney character we were most like (I was Jiminy Cricket, Tammy was Cinderella and Alex was Shere Khan from The Jungle Book). Then we were able to do voiceovers for scenes from Disney movies and watch and listen as they were played back. That was an absolute riot and, despite the crowds we’d been dealing with all day, it was quiet and there were very few people around.

Another thing we had decided to do that we might not have if the lines hadn’t been so long was to see Captain EO. After a few rides and another decision not to wait in the long line for the Matterhorn, we found ourselves in the area, so we waited for the next showing. Yes, it was very cheesy and very 80s, but we all enjoyed it, even Alex. Another unexpected treat on Tuesday night after Captain EO was, as we were passing by the castle, we happened to catch the official lighting ceremony. We weren’t even aware that there was such a thing, but we got there just in time for the narration and the lighting followed by “snow” (or what Alex called “snoap” since it was really soap bubbles).

Again, we didn’t make it until midnight and my foot was still hurting, but we felt like we made the most of a busy day that got off to an inauspicious start.

Wednesday 11/24

We had not given up on Mimi’s after the previous morning and had a much better breakfast on Wednesday morning. We were all feeling much more positive as we headed for the parks after breakfast and were determined to make the most of our last day. Not surprisingly, the crowds were even bigger than they had been, and even bigger probably than we could have imagined. We knew that we would have to make the most of FPs that day and, knowing that they are typically accepted any time after the start time printed on them, we started to collect them for use later in the day while riding whatever didn’t have too long of a line.

The skies had cleared up again from the rain the previous evening but it still wasn’t warm enough for shorts. When we got over to DCA, we picked up passes for California Screamin’ to make sure we got at least one more ride on it then resigned ourselves to wait in the super-long line for TSMM. It took us 40 minutes to reach the actual queue where the sign said “50 minute wait from this point.” Around that time, as we were heading toward Mr. Potato Head, Tammy noticed that Maura Tierney was in the single-rider line with her family and a CM escort. I went all paparazzi and took a quick photo, but we never got another look at her nor did we notice any other celebs in the parks.

To give another idea of how busy it was, after TSMM, Tammy was even willing to ride Mickey’s Fun Wheel…in one of the moving gondolas. The three of us were packed in with three other people and at least we got to ride something without having to wait too long. We continued to collect and use FPs, having a collection of five sets at one point, while waiting on lines that we considered not to be too long. We didn’t really have a plan for lunch once that time rolled around so we just decided to stop at Mimi’s on the way back to the hotel. Mimi’s wasn’t too busy and we had a nice lunch then went back to the hotel for a break and to figure out what to do for the rest of the day.

We had a stack of FPs, which we planned to use throughout the evening, plus I was interested in seeing the Blue Sky Cellar at DCA. We were all pretty much of the mind that, even though things hadn’t gone completely as we’d expected or hoped, we’d had a great visit and were truly grateful for all that we’d accomplished on Sunday, but we were about ready to be done with the crowds and head back home. Again, we made the most of the time we had left, using our FPs and getting one last Dole Whip Float while checking the shops for any more souvenirs. We did visit Blue Sky Cellar and learned a great deal about all of the expansion going on at DCA, from the new Little Mermaid ride to CarsLand and even the re-theming of the entrance. It confirmed for us that we’d definitely be back, but only after all of that was complete.

Alex ended up with a lot of Disney Racers, which are Disney themed Hot Wheels-type vehicles, several new sets of ears and a few other souvenirs, a lot of which he bought for himself. Tammy and I had picked up a few things here and there but I was still looking for the Nightmare book that I’d seen at Off the Page. As we were exploring the shops on Main Street on our way out for our final exit, I did manage to find a copy that was in great shape, so I was very pleased.

We left the park feeling more tired than disappointed and were looking forward to a few days of rest back at home.

Thursday 11/25

Our flight out on Thanksgiving morning was at 8:05am so that the family wouldn’t have to hold Thanksgiving dinner for us. We’d contacted SuperShuttle to move our pick-up time from 6:30am to 6:15am after putting some more thought into our initial decision on when to be picked up. We were up early and I was just getting checked out of the hotel when the van showed up. What we didn’t realize, and hadn’t expected, was that we were the first of several stops for pick-ups. We hit three other hotels in the area before we were even headed toward the airport, which had me a little bit stressed, and the driver could best be described as erratic. In fact, at our first stop when we finally reached the airport, Alex leaned over and barfed on the door next to him. Part of that was that he hadn’t eaten breakfast yet, but most of that was due to the driving. Fortunately, because he hadn’t eaten, there hadn’t been much to barf up and he quickly jumped out and finished up in a nearby trash can. None of the other passengers seemed surprised that it had happened.

Check-in was short and sweet and the security line was essentially non-existent, so we were at the gate with plenty of time. Again, none of us was subjected to a full-body scan or a pat-down, which all the major news outlets could not seem to stop talking about. We grabbed something to eat and, before we had time to finish what turned out to be pretty bad coffee, we were boarding the plane. We’d seen on the flight out that, because it was a holiday, Southwest was offering a free cocktail to passengers who were flying that day. It was only 9am when the beverage cart came around, but Tammy ordered a bloody mary and I had a Corona and we definitely weren’t the only ones taking advantage of the offer.

We arrived a bit early in Denver and were immediately in contact with Tammy’s dad, who was picking us up. I was disappointed to see that, after we’d checked our bags, someone had managed to rip the two zipper pulls and the lock off the front pocket of my new suitcase. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize that the damage was something I needed to report immediately; I was thinking more about getting home and about Tammy’s dad already being on his way. Looks like I will be SOL in getting any help with getting the damage repaired.

In any case, we were looking forward to Thanksgiving dinner and sharing our experiences with the family, but we vowed that we would not consider a trip to Disneyland at that time of year again.

Jrsy, you really hit some crowds at DL! I feel for poor Alex and the Super Shuttle. It sure speaks on how that maniac was driving.

I went all paparazzi
:lmao: This had me laughing! :rotfl:

I think I would be crushed to have a bad breakfast at MiMi's but glad they redeemed themselves and you gave it another shot. When did they say that everything would be completed over at DCA? I cannot imagine how much pain you were in doing all that walking with Gout. Ouch! The crowds sounded insane. It was like that for us when we went over Columbus Day one year. Poor Alex, I get car sick too and am so paranoid I would puke in front of everyone on a shuttle. I hate Super Shuttle and I swore them off from a bad experience in FL. It took me 2 hours to get from MCO to All Star Movies because they dropped people off at different hotels that weren't even near each other or on Disney's property. It made no sense.

See you tonight! We will be late because Chris has school tonight, but we will definitely be there!

There is a lot of work that will be going on at DCA over the next couple of years. There is some information about it here:

I think that is mostly start dates, though. CarsLand is supposed to be done in 2012 but I don't know about the rest of it.

If there is a positive side to the gout recurrence, at least I knew it and was able to take care of it ASAP. The first time I had it, I had no idea what it was and didn't see a doctor about it until it was almost too painful to walk. It never got that bad this time because I started treating it almost immediately.

See you tonight - arriving late and staying late!

Are you guys thinking about me this week?
