Cozumel Ideas

We went to Chichen Itza via DCL. It is a lengthy excursion because it requires a ferry ride between Cozumel and the mainland, then a few hours drive to Chichen Itza. But it's a great excursion just to be able to see that historic site. It is not exhausting physically in any way. Just a moderate length walk from the parking lot to the pyramid area, which is a flat, visitor-friendly area (and of course there are other historic structures on the grounds around the pyramid). One thing to keep in mind is the importance of bringing an umbrella in case it rains. The excursion company will not provide those for you.

A DCL excursion was the only way I wanted to do Chichen Itza, because it takes you so far from the ship. I wanted no worries about being able to get back on board in case of a delay.
We've been considering this excursion (assuming we can actually go on our December cruise...). Did you have enough time in Chichen Itza to explore much beyond seeing the pyramid and taking pictures? I've tried looking at maps of the site, but I don't have a sense of scale or how long it takes to walk around. I know the time there is very limited, but I'm wondering if you can at least see several of the other major buildings there, or if it's pretty much just get out, see the main pyramid and snap some pictures, and leave.

You have plenty of time to walk around and see the other buildings there. You're free for at least an hour, maybe more. We went two years ago, so it's hard to remember the exact amount of time we had, but I would estimate that it was probably an hour and a half or so. I just remember that we had plenty of time, were very leisurely, and after a brief group introduction to the main pyramid, we independently walked around the entire grounds and saw the different structures and took lots of pictures. No rush at all.

We have a MerryTime cruise booked. It will be two parents and two college age kids - and possibly an active 80-year-old.

We have been to Cozumel a couple times in recent years on RCL. Each time we just went by taxi to paradise beach and shopped around the port.

Just curious what DCL excursions might look like. Has anyone done a DCL excursion you would recommend?
Two Cozumel, Mexico, sightseeing suggestions for you:

Visit the ruins of San Gervasio -- about a 30 minute drive from the port. This is a pre-Columbian Mayan historic, archeological site. Some of the building structure are better preserved than others at this site. This site is not as well preserved as the ruins of Chichen Itza, but the travel time to San Gervasio is much shorter.

Visit the Discover Mexico Historical Park -- at this business you can do a walking tour through an outdoor park of small scale historic replications of Mexican archeological sites and buildings dating from precolonial to present times. Discover Mexico has an art museum, gift shop, and restaurant.
