Covid Fatigue

I'm not sure if you saw it, but CBC had a good article on this subject yesterday. It came from the fact there are 3 people in ICU in New Brunswick I believe (I'm going off memory, feel free to correct me) after having the vaccine. The expert said it's not surprising considering the vaccine trials would have had a relatively small sample compared to the millions of doses administered worldwide up to this point. The 3 cases equal a 0.002% chance of this happening, and details have apparently not been shared about the 3 cases, but the expert 'assumed' they would not have been young healthy individuals.

Yes, that's the article I shared above.

It doesn't really change the fact that vaccination isn't going to be a guarantee, and that is their point. Look at the US - they're getting ICU cases in people who are past the 14 days of their second dose.

People are getting upset, and increasing their vaccine hesitancy, because we have people ending up in ICU and dying even after being vaccinated, because they were told it was 100% effective in preventing that. It may be a very small amount, but when the public was told one thing and now another is happening... Now they marketed it that way because of vaccine hesitancy, but... probably transparency would have been a better route, which is why they're now talking about it.
Were we told that though? I've always assumed that the super speedy trials and rolled out vaccine could only be supported by what little data we've been able to gather. I don't think any vaccine is 100% safe or effective and I would assume nobody would have assumed this one was either. This is real time data we are gathering and there's no way to know. I don't recall being guaranteed anything, just being told that what was gathered from the very limited trials.
People will be vaccine hesitant no matter what.
As for me, I'm covid hesitant. And I'm getting really worried that we are going to stay in this limbo forever.

Well was it Donald (??) I think mentioned earlier (somewhere lol) that that is how they were promoting/sharing about the vaccine (100% at preventing severe illness). When I got looking into old articles about it (because I didn't think we had been told that exclusively), I found they were right - media all talked about how it was 100% effective at preventing severe illness in trial and never once (in the articles I read) expressed that that would not translate into 100% efficacy in real life. It's only been the last few weeks that countries are starting to discuss the "gap" between trial and real life in the media.

Sadly, a lot of people are very science-illiterate, so don't really grasp the concept of "trials" vs. real life etc... And it may not even be science-illiterate as much as just a lack of understanding about drug trials etc...

Like you, I already knew from day 1 that 100% in trial meant very little once it got into real world setting, and it doesn't diminish my confidence in the vaccine at all. But for the average person without that understanding, when you're told by the media and your government that, "It was shown to be 100% effective" without the discussion of, "but that was in trial with a small amount of people, and we know that there will be some breakthrough in real life"... I can see where it sets people up for misunderstanding.

yes, it was me but I'm none of the things you mentioned and I'm fully aware of the differences between trial (speedy like this or not) and real life scenarios, can't be, too many variables.
Only thing I can be guiltily of is being tired, mentally drained and desperate for the treatments I've been denied due to the restrictions imposed that are COVID-19 related. That means I didn't add any of the extremely important factors you've mentioned and in doing so I've broken my cardinal rule of not posting anything that I can't provide direct links or screenshots to back up my words. I don't want to be part of the spread of inaccurate or incomplete information. It only adds to the background noise and we can't have that happening right now.

We’re gonna get shut down if things keeps up, guys. Can we go back to talking about how much Covid sucks and we all want to go back to Disney?? 😆

PS - finally getting some gorgeous warm weather here in BC! That helps lift the spirits!
I have been loving our weather the last couple of days and it does lift my spirits. I agree covid sucks and I NEED to get back to disney before I lose what small amount of sanity I have left.

Cut yourself some slack 🤗 you didn't spread any inaccurate info! You were right - initially that IS how they were promoting it! The only reason I mentioned you was because I remembered you saying that's what they had been telling us and then your comment about "needing time to process the disappointment that they weren't 100%". ♥

You're right though, that's the other piece of this, we have people like yourself, who are aware of these things, but who are just so mentally tired from Covid, or perhaps just so desperate for a reprieve from all of this... that they just take what they're told at face value. And then it's disheartening to hear otherwise. (Which all ties into the very heart of this thread - Covid fatigue).

To be fair, I don't think they were doing it (withholding the info about the gap) intentionally (some anti-vaxxers of course are swearing it's "all part of the plot" 🙄🙄🙄), but I think they were just trying to build optimism and confidence.

@mshanson3121, if the vaccine isn't the answer to our current predicament then what is. If we can't take what the health authorities in this country say then who can we believe? It's fine to be critical but point us to a better way please.

I'm not desperate for a quick solution but I did take the first opportunity offered to me to help get us all out of this current situation. Is it perfect no, but nothing in life is perfect. The vaccines are the only option available to us to correct the course of the pandemic.

I feel we should be encouraging others to do their part if they are able to help society recover. Its easy to be a perfect armchair quarterback, real life is a little more challenging. We need to cut those in authoriy a little slack.

Based on the user name, I'm guessing Yellowknife!

I actually have an online friend who I have known for over 16 years who lives in YK. :flower3:

Oh goodness, never thought of that. For some reason my mind was going to New York. Thought maybe they liked marathons, lol.

Tired of Covid and really missing Disney today. :( Now they have Coconut Dole Whip and I can't try one!:drinking1:sad::sad::sad::sad:
They have a coconut dole whip???? I actually broke down and bought the dole whip dry mix lol and an ice cream maker so I could make it at home. I may put coconut tequila over mine shhhhhh.

That sounds good!!!:teeth: I am not sure when they came out with the coconut dole whip but I just noticed today they had one. My daughter and I tried making a pineapple version last year and it was pretty good but just not the same. I was thinking about buying the dry dole whip mix, how was it!? Did you use a soft serve ice cream maker or a regular one? Since we can't go to Disney right now self serve Dole Whips all summer sounds good!:sunny:

I'd be curious how the dole whip mix is as well. Pretty pricey to have shipped locally after a quick search.
