Covid And The Rest of Us

My husband's uncle works on that show on Broadway...at this point it will be a year and 3 months with him out of a job :( Working in musicals has been his career for decades. While he toured in the past he's been in the NYC area for a long time now. We know he misses working so very much.

Did he by any chance know our beloved Nick Cordero? Born and raised in my hometown, and profoundly missed dear friend of some of my nieces and nephews also in the Industry. :grouphug:

I honestly don't know if he did but it's certainly possible. *sigh* I remember reading the updates and the eventual passing of Nick Cordero and my oh my such a heartbreaking story

Heard today that my ants workplace, a hospital for mainly elderly and veterans in Dublin will be starting vaccinations this weekend. My aunt is a physiotherapist so is a front line health worker, no word yet on when her appointment is.

Aaaaaaaand... the Dutch government has resigned. https://www.politico.eu/article/dutch-government-resigns-over-childcare-benefit-scandal/

It is incredibly pointless.
- The people who are involved in the scandal will not get persecuted, as it is basically an entire institution. Yes, you have the people in charge, but also dozens of people who executed the processes to a letter without thinking themselves or thinking about human decency. One minister had already said he wouldn't advance in his political career (he wanted to become PM one day).
- The government was going to resign anyway because we have elections in 2 months. All the major decisions on the agenda would have been postponed either way. The only thing our government was going to do anyway was to take care of what needs to happen now, aka managing the Covid crisis.

What good does this do to the victims in the scandal?

With elections being 2 months away and the past year was focussed on Covid, the future years are going to be focussed on Covid. I wouldn't be surprised if the party of our PM will get re-elected again. The PM got good reviews for his actions at the beginning of the Covid crisis. This is not the time for a completely different route politically and I think that people would prefer for our PM to finish the Covid job. I don't think a new totally different government is going to have a completely different Covid strategy. Yes, there are people who object to the government's measures, but also 80% of the nation understands that extra measures were necessary (as announced last Tuesday).

Oh, other news, I think I mentioned a few months ago that we had some B-celebrity singer making a stink that she didn't understand and that she didn't want to have the measures anymore etc. She had a talk with one of our frontmen who explained to her, 1 to 1, how everything works, and why we do this, and she was going to help to bring this message to her young fanbase. She is 22.
Yesterday she got fined as she was filming illegally in an abandoned factory for a video clip. And she posted on Social Media that she was filming. *facepalm*.

Very grave news on the vaccine front here. Our supply has been disrupted and now many people are approaching the deadline for their 2nd doses without those doses being available. Just last week the feds assured the provinces that product would be available and AFAIK every province moved ahead with exhausting their supply on first doses without withholding anything for 2nd doses. We now wait and see what consequences will be.

Ugh, it's a bad situation getting worse, right? BC ran out of vaccines on MONDAY. The covid vaccine chart has not updated BC numbers in several days. GRRRR

Alberta was predicting being out by yesterday. The virtual meeting between the PM and all the Premiers just took place last week and they were all assured supply was stable and encouraged to "get vaccines into arms", so I presume that's what has happened everywhere. Does anybody know what happens if the 2nd dose isn't received within the product guidelines? :scared:

:(

It was one of my big concerns here for the States. It sounds like long-term they think all will smooth over for y'all in Canada but right now that concern over second dosages it very real IMO.

Honest opinion I think there are competing viewpoints on the vaccine. In your article the viewpoint seems to be more talking about the committed doses will be the same for Q1 and while that sounds great for a business perspective it's not for those who fall into that gap where their second dose may be delayed and I hope not completely abandoned (as I fear may be the case in the U.S. for at least some people).

We're just finding out for us too our reserve is already depleted: https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2021/01/15/trump-vaccine-reserve-used-up/ "
"When Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar announced this week that the federal government would begin releasing coronavirus vaccine doses held in reserve for second shots, no such reserve existed, according to state and federal officials briefed on distribution plans. The Trump administration had already begun shipping out what was available beginning at the end of December, taking second doses directly off the manufacturing line. Now, health officials across the country who had anticipated their extremely limited vaccine supply as much as doubling beginning next week are confronting the reality that their allocations will remain largely flat, dashing hopes of dramatically expanding access for millions of elderly people and those with high-risk medical conditions."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not sure I can blame the current administration because so many people (including many here) were screaming at them to release doses, including Gottleib, that we just need to get any and everyone vaccinated now.

Places within a state may still be able to get doses from the state but they'll run out unless they get more from the state and the state will run out if the Feds don't give more. Someone in FL mentioned their county ran out the other day and was actively canceling people's appointments for their second shot.

At least from the CDC:

The mRNA COVID-19 vaccine series consist of two doses administered intramuscularly:

  • Pfizer-BioNTech (30 µg, 0.3 ml each): 3 weeks (21 days) apart
  • Moderna (100 µg, 0.5 ml): 1 month (28 days) apart
Persons should not be scheduled to receive the second dose earlier than recommended (i.e., 3 weeks [Pfizer-BioNTech] or 1 month [Moderna]). However, second doses administered within a grace period of 4 days earlier than the recommended date for the second dose are still considered valid. Doses inadvertently administered earlier than the grace period do not need to be repeated. There is no maximum interval between the first and second doses for either vaccine. Therefore, if the second dose is administered >3 weeks after the first Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine dose or >1 month after the first Moderna vaccine dose, there is no need to restart the series. Vaccine administration errors should be reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS).

BUT that doesn't really discuss if it's after, I assume there's like a few days on the back end by not by much really. England becomes the guinea pig I guess long-term on this one because I believe they were going to delay the 2nd dose by something like 12 weeks.

Oh thank goodness! If that's the case though, our medical officials should be shouting it from the rooftops to reassure people - this is a very, very big deal.

I think the concern is really the efficacy part. The trials were based off of parameters set forth so health complications/wearing off immunity I don't think is necessarily the concern for delay of second dose but rather for Pfizer and Moderna the 95% efficacy rate was based off of 21 days and 28 days respectively. So anything outside that window..like a large delay..may ultimately reduce the efficacy rate. I believe Pfizer is around 50-ish% efficacy with 1 dose or thereabouts so it's still a big concern to delay the 2nd dose because we don't know the ramifications of having people walking around with less protection than was initially spoken about.

I know Fauci's comments regarding England's 12 week thing is: "In the U.S., Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in the U.S., told CNN in early January that “we want to stick with what the science tells us”—in other words, not deviating from the 21-day window. We make decisions based on data. We don’t have any data of giving a single dose and waiting for more than the normal period of time [for the second dose],” he said."

So yes I think Canada should be reassuring people but I also think there's unknown consequences because it was never studied. The consequences may not be significant or they may be we just don't know. I suppose not as dire news as you might have originally thought but not necessarily 'you're in the clear' news either :(

Canada has already said the second dose can be delayed to 42 days, Quebec will be giving it at 90 days...

https://www.cbc.ca/news/health/covid-vaccine-two-doses-guidelines-1.5873856
It looks like Manitoba and Saskatchewan plan to give the second dose on schedule but other provinces may vary. Since immunity is only 95% after the second dose, and that a week or two after that second dose, hopefully we will be able to get enough to keep going. I thought Ontario had held back enough for the second dose but that may have changed. I know they are still saying long term care facilities will be all vaccinated by mid-February. Hopefully one of the other two vaccines will be approved soon as well, AstraZeneca is being looked at and I think Johnson and Johnson as well? And that one is one dose. Though I think not the 94/95% of the ones in use now.

BC is trying to do it around 35 days, but PHO says it's safe to stretch to 42 days if we have to, but she would rather not.

BC has now received more doses. Received just over 99,0000 and have given out almost 76,000 of those so far.

Praise the Lord!! :banana:Alberta will see some small relaxation in the restrictions as of Monday. People from two different households (to a maximum group size of 10) will now be allowed to meet outdoors, masked and distanced. This is a very wise move on the part of officials. Albertans were found to be very compliant with the lock-down up until now but patience and tempers are starting to seriously fray. This approach provides a reasonable level of caution but will be like a safety valve to prevent people from abandoning the rules entirely and beginning to meet again secretly and in far riskier settings.

Hair salons, chiropractors and opticians will also be allowed to re-open under the same stringent safety rules that were previously in place. Again, this is a fair and sensible decision as the provincial health authorities admitted to not being able to trace transmission of even one single case to any of these settings. What a relief for so many - an estimate I heard today said 14,000 people province-wide will get their jobs back. :goodvibes

I am just wondering if this extension is at their own cost. I know that Australia has charged a fee for the quarantine and it is not inexpensive so I was wondering if these people will have to pay for the extension. I would think that would be quite unfair and for the people who were on their last day they must be so disappointed. Thanks for your updates. They often make me jealous since we are nowhere near your levels.

No, the extension is being paid for by the state government; I'm not sure if they are being refunded for the initial portion too.

:goodvibes I hope you love Come from Away. That story is a great point of national pride for Canadians. I also hope the world turns back to a place where you might come to see us yourself some day and experience our hospitality in person. :flower3:

I have actually seen it twice already and absolutely love it! :goodvibes I’ve never been to Canada, although there are usually direct flights from Melbourne to Vancouver and I’ve always thought that might be a fun way to get to North America rather than through LA.

Not to steal Annette's thunder but I hope one day maybe NFLD (Newfoundland/old school) is on your travel plans too. :wave2:

Yes, Newfoundland is most definitely on the list now! Although I don’t know if I’m up for kissing a cod...:rotfl2:

Update, we just got a WhatsAp photo from my aunt, showing off her vaccination appointment card, she had her first dose this morning :Pinkbounc

:goodvibes Cute. Are those swans or geese? What's the weather like there right now? All our waterfowl have migrated and we won't see them again until May.
They are swans. Our geese don't really swim together like this to go from one place to the other. A goose would fly if he wants to get to the other side of the city. A swan glides :)
(Unscientific observation :) )

We had our first snow today, about 1 cm, but it will be gone tomorrow. Last few days it has been a little colder than average. Average is here is about 5-6 degrees Celsius (low 40s). It has been rainy lately, more than I want to ;-)
