Couch to Castaway Cay

A couple of years ....What's the point? A silly rubber medal?

And what's interesting is that a couple years ago it was a cheap hard plastic Mickey head shaped medal that they also gave away for trivia challenges and dunk contests.

NOW, however, it's a lovely rubber medal that looks nothing like cheap.

Just a word of warning though, even though its December, make sure you drink plenty of water the day before and stay hydrated during the race. you can get very dehydrated very quickly.

YES.

Counting in my head...you can pass by water 4 times. Go out, water is outside the loop, go around the loop get the same water, go up to Serenity, turn around get the same water, go around the loop again and it's the same water as you leave the loop and go back to the finish/start. And sometimes people find that the water cooler inside the loop is functioning.

Wear sunscreen and a hat. Find Body Glide and put it where your skin might rub against other skin or against seams of clothing. Trust me.

Just did the 5k about a week ago. You'll love it. I'm 48 and just did the Disney World marathon in January and I'm not a runner by any means, so you can do this. There is no problem walking on the 5k. I took my time and even stopped to climb the observation tower and enjoy the view for a bit. Just enjoy the moment and the training that gets you there.

Good for you. I'm sure you'll do great. I actually just did the 5k for the first time on the 12th of March. I had wanted to try to get in better shape in October and I'm 27. I wanted to gain some muscle and lose some weight. So I got a trainer and then we decided that I should run this 5k, so I trained with him at the gym and ran it in 44 mins, it was my second 5k, first one was back in January 2015 and ran that one in a hour, stopped for a picture there though.

From a self-confessed running hater that couldn't run very far to a now running lover that can cover 5+ miles at a time- give yourself time and love, honor your body and its limitations- run it, walk it-just keep moving in a healthy way. To the runners and walkers of the Castaway Cay 5K- Just Go! You got this!! :cheer2::banana::cool2:

I've developed a plan to get myself into shape for the 5K. Loosely based on the "Couch to 5K" plan, it has me taking things very, very slowly. I've included a spreadsheet that shows what I intend to do and when I intend to do it. It starts with me walking a mile three times a week and ramping things up very slowly until I'm jogging to Medicine Lake and back.

So is this Medicine Lake in Golden Valley ?

Good luck! You are correct in setting incremental goals. Achieve one and move to the next and you'll have a nice set of accomplishments in time for the CC 5k.

My brother was obese in his 20's and in his late 20s got tired of it so within 12-14 months he lost over 100 lbs just by starting as you suggest- walking 3x per week. He went from near 0 activity to moderate activity. He altered his diet, by eliminating snacks and a few other things, but never bought any special items or shakes etc. he did not go to a gym either. Not that his method is yours, but he accomplished a lot just by adding physical activity and being mindful of his diet.

I know in my community there are "family 5ks" that are run throughout summer and fall, and most likely you would have something like this near you to participate in during the few months leading up to your cruise. Since often they follow some park path, you could use the route on your own to train if you didn't want to actually participate in a 5k till CC. Enjoy your training!

I just made the rash decision to do this on the same cruise, but will walk it rather than run. I will probably be wearing our then 5 year old in a backpack carrier, since she won't be able to manage it on her own due to some physically limiting challenges and we really don't want to bring wheelchairs or strollers on the cruise. I certainly can't clip a 16 minute mile--so hopefully other slow pokes will join us in the back. :D Yay for goals for everyone!
They often have strollers to borrow on castaway cay in a "parking area" near where we get off the ship. Even if you don't bring your own this may be something to consider. This is a hot, sweaty run and you could be really uncomfortable with a small warm body strapped to your back...

i too will be running the 5k on castaway cay in early december. much like another poster (whom i know from high school ;) I gained a ton of weight with my first baby, like 102 pounds- fastest way to get it off was to start to run, it took 8 years of running to be able to run like i do now, my first 5k was 6 years ago and i ran/walked in 48 mins. Then I got pregnant with twins, back off the wagon for 3 or so years. Now i am training for a marathon in september (i use the term "training" loosely, I keep telling myself i have plenty of time-lol) for short distances I'm running at about an 8 minute pace, for a marathon, i will be happy if i can hold 10 minute pace. It takes a while and I used to have many injuries and get discouraged- as dory says - just keep swimming - just keep running, it will change you, both mentally and physically. I will be cheering for you as well!

So, I'm 50. And obese. And these are not good things to be both at the same time.

A couple of years ago we went on a Disney cruise which included a stop on Disney's private island, Castaway Cay. As we disembarked we saw Goofy organizing the joggers for the Castaway Cay 5K. I thought to myself, "suckers." You're going on vacation to *exercise*? What's the point? A silly rubber medal?

But all the joggers looked much more fit and attractive than I was. And they're likely to live much longer than I will. I have a soon-to-be five year old daughter that I want to live to see graduate college.

Anne and I are saving up to go on another Disney cruise in December, a few short nine months away. Part of the itinerary is a stop at Castaway Cay.

I've decided that when the Disney Dream arrives in Castaway Cay on December 6th, 2016, I will count myself among the suckers. I haven't run a race since middle school, so doing the Castaway Cay 5K will be an excellent inauguration into the whole 5K thing. Plus I'll get my own cheap rubber medal.

If the goals I set seem ridiculously modest, keep in mind I've been out of shape for a couple of decades now, so I need to cautious in easing my way back into the whole exercise thing.

So if you're going to be on Castaway Cay in early December, come cheer me on. :)

Wow! What a wonderful way to work toward your fitness goal. You're an inspiration! :yay:

Just be sure not to take things too fast & keep in touch with your doctor about your fitness program. We ran/walked the CC 5K this year & found it challenging due to the humidity, so don't push yourself too hard when you're there. Walking it the whole way is fine, & you'll still get the medal, however long it takes you.:tiptoe:

I'm doing the same thing. But I'm on the Fantasy and will be there right after you.

Good for you. There are plenty of apps for a smart phone(c25k) on Apple apps. Slow and steady. It's not about time but getting to the finish line, what ever the goal.good luck and when you finish the run enjoy the medal!

How is the terrain of the 5k? After several turned ankles, I no longer run on uneven surfaces at all, especially with pebbles, etc. i run on my treadmill but walk outside. I would love to do the CC run but am nervous about the condition of the road. Any info? Thanks.

To the OP... Good for you!!! We all must start somewhere.

I'm hoping to be able to walk the 5k when we are there on Mother's Day. I say hoping because I am (according to the medical community) morbidly obese (in my opinion obese - yes, morbidly so- I don't agree). The other challenge I'm facing is that I'm recovering from an injury that has had me unable to walk unassisted for the last 3 1/2 months.

I'm in physical therapy and I'm recovering and I have had my goal to be able to, at minimum, walk the 5k on our cruise. With a few hiccups along the way, I'm now not sure how quick I will be able to do it. I don't want to give up on my goal but I'm concerned with the pace I'll be able to walk it.

Now for my question... Is there a time limit allowed to complete the 5k? Prior to my injury I was walking a mile in about 20 minutes. I'm not sure what time I'm at right now. I see a few people saying that they have walked the 5k, I'm just curious if there is a time limit because I don't know how long it would take me right now.

TIA

The couch-to-5k program my husband teaches is 12 weeks long. You have plenty of time. Very excited for you! You can do it!!

It's flat. Not saying there won't be pebble in the road but I don't remember anything dangerous. What I do remember was the heat - even in February.

I'm also doing this for a cruise in Sept. Have never run a 5k but have always wanted to. I need to lose 30-40 lbs and started doing the c to 5k as part of my exercise regimen in hopes that by Sept I'll be able to run the entire race.

Good luck

Good for you! It doesn't matter how fast or how slow because YOU are actually out there doing it when the naysayers aren't! I started running a few years ago when a number of people (my mother included) asked me if I was pregnant. I wasn't. Turned out it was an enormously overgrown ovarian cyst, but still. I did use the Couch to 5K app and I loved how it moved you up a little each week. And you could go back and re-do the weeks if you weren't ready to move up. I'm not "hooked" and I don't get a runner's high, but I do enjoy how I feel after a run and I do love the measurability of running as opposed to other forms of exercise.

So, not only am I a sucker on our cruise in August (hot! humid!), but my husband and I (and a friend) are all running a 5K EVERY MONTH this year. Just finished our third a few weeks ago. You may never come to love it, but you will love how much better you feel all day. GOOD LUCK!

Cheering for you. Great spreadsheet! My nephew runs alot and his motto is "don't think, just run". So when I am working out(trying to lose 20 lbs) and I get tired, I try to use that motto.
