Costa Concordia Runs Aground / Deaths Reported

That's a cop out. :sad2:

If you're on a date, you can discuss who pays.

In the general public, it's ALWAYS acceptable to let the lady go first, or hold a door. If a so-called "lady" gets offended that you held a door, SHE'S the one with bad manners, not you.

My point is that no one has those manners anymore. That stuff about ladies first is falling by the wayside.

Im sure you all have been been to Disney and taken the buses or monorail at some point. How many times do you see people giving up seats to women, children, or the elderly? You see it once in a while, but many times no one offers to get up. And many times when it is offered, it's refused.

I'm proud of DS13 then. He always offers his seat on the WDW bus to any ladies who are standing after we board. He will also insist on holding the door for everyone. :)

What ever happened to Children and Women first ?

If you are reffering to the lifeboat Women and children first, the rule changed, though I dont remember when or the reason why. Had something to do with keeping families together if I remember correctly.

My husband always gives up his seat, opens doors, let's ladies go first, and won't let me walk on the outside closest to the street.

We are now teaching our 12 year old son the same things and require him to follow through.

Yes, defenetly yes. By all means my intention was never to open Pandoras Box on the Battle of the Sex.

I just mentioned it b/c I'm seeing too many news reports that mention families giving their children to someone else about to get in a lifeboat.

I prey to God to never put me in a similar situation but what I would hope to do is to ensure my family's well being first but could not get into a lifeboat knowing and seeing children/elderly/unfit women and handicaped struggleling to get into a lifeboat. I do need to live with myself after the event.

Beleive me I'm no hero neither want to be one but I figure I can take care much better of myself with the easy of mind of loved ones being safe.

As for being a Gentleman or not, well that should be taken care in another thread dedicated just for that I think ? Any volunteers to create one ?

As for this unfortunate event of the Costa Concordia, investigations will be done and new regulations will be made to the point that it might change the way we cruised today.

Just as an example: 30 days before your cruise you will receive a legal form explaining to you what to do in case of emergency and making you sign it before boarding the ship.

And Yes, I will continue cruising (DCL) for as long as I can afford it; just hoping for prices to go down now but not to the extent that quality or safety are affected.

Death toll now up to 6 with 29 still missing.

Now apparently there is fuel and oil leaking into the water which could make this an ecological mess too.

It sounded from the story, as though the family with the small child were already at a lifeboat station. I would like to think that they were able to get onto another lifeboat.
I've not heard of any of the deaths so far, that one was a child.

I think about that baby too. I looked around and found some pictures of a little girl being carried by a rescuer (alive and for the most part well). I pray that is her.

29 missing? I thought it was 15.

No reason given for the change.

A couple from Minnesota, a Peruvian waitress, a 5 year Italian girl and her father.. are among the missing. This will become more difficult, as names and faces are put on the missing and dead :sad2:

The rule changed because ships are now supposed to have enough lifeboat space for everyone aboard. In fact, most passenger ships apparently have more than enough lifeboat space, so there is no reason to have an "official" rule that would result in split families. The problem the Titanic had is that there was only enough lifeboat space for about half the persons aboard. And when it was evacuated they did not even fill all that space.

A lot of emergency plans try to take panic into account but they really have no way of knowing the true effect of panic unless something actually happens. The stories from the Concordia right now are that there was a lot of panic among the crew, including the captain - he left the ship before the passengers were evacuated and refused to return. There were two women from the US on the Today Show this morning who were aboard. They said they were unable to find an English-speaking crew member until they encountered an Australian dancer, who abandoned the passengers to look for her friends, and that there were crew members running frightened all over the ship because even the crew members had not been told what was going on.

There were many crew members, who didn't speak Italian OR English. They may have been told, but didn't understand...

Sadly the official death toll has gone up to 11. It is looking increasingly unlikely that more survivors are going to be found.

Schettino has insisted he stayed aboard until the ship was evacuated, but the recording of his conversation with Italian Coast Guard Capt. Gregorio De Falco indicates he fled before all passengers were off — and then resisted De Falco's repeated orders to return.

"You go on board and then you will tell me how many people there are. Is that clear?" De Falco shouted in the audio tape.

Schettino resisted, saying the ship was tipping and that it was dark. At the time, he was in a lifeboat and said he was coordinating the rescue from there.

De Falco shouted back: "And so what? You want go home, Schettino? It is dark and you want to go home? Get on that prow of the boat using the pilot ladder and tell me what can be done, how many people there are and what their needs are. Now!"

"You go aboard. It is an order. Don't make any more excuses. You have declared the abandoning of the ship, now I am in charge," De Falco shouted.

Schettino was finally heard agreeing to reboard. It is unclear whether he did.

There is no way my husband would take a seat in a lifeboat if there were women and children waiting on the deck. No way.

I don't think it's antiquated at all...guess I'm old fashioned. I also think I'd be perfectly capable of managing my own kids in an emergency if he had to stay behind.

Does anyone remember the cruise ship that listed to one side a few years ago? Ever since then, whenever I board a ship I think about how I would get out of my room. If the ship is listing port side and I am on starboard, how am I going to pull the stateroom door UP so we can get out? etc.

I heard reports from a crew member that because the Concordia began listing so quickly, only half the lifetboats could be launched.

There's some pretty amazing infra-red video of passengers crawling down the SIDE of the hull to get into awaiting rescue boats!
