Just back from CSR and a typically wonderful trip to WDW.
This was my first time at a moderate resort so I wasn't expecting deluxe, but there were a few things that surprised me in a good way, and some others in a negative way. I'll break it down for you.
Positives first!
- The grounds of CSR are really lovely - first class and typical Disney
- Loved the pools (theme and quiet pools)
- There is a 24 hour gym and even a small spa
- Flat panel TV's, modern rooms, great beds
- Loved the sliding doors that separated the bathroom area
- Full room service - I think CSR is the only moderate that offers this?
- Great food options (I liked the Pepper Market)
- A nightclub (Rix) with full bar - not something that is typical of Disney
- Convenient parking
- Overall a very quiet resort and not overrun with too many people
- Didn't use Disney Transport this time but never had to wait for anything at the resort
Sorry, but there were some negatives too.

- CSR is hard to locate. Not as many street signs listing it as other resorts.
- You can't walk from CSR to anywhere (I knew this going in)
- The room buildings are not very "magical" and have little theming. They look like mid-range apartment buildings in Phoenix.
- Cast members didn't seem as friendly at CSR for some reason.
- We never got the great Disney greeting we usually get at other Disney resorts when we first pull up to check in. Mind you we arrived late (9pm)
- We requested building 9B and got 4 (Casitas) - no big deal. 3rd floor overlooking the quiet pool
- There was a huge spider and web at our room entrance (taking up about 1/4 of the doorway). Welcome! LOL
- On day 2 we left the room at about 10am and didn't return until 7pm. It was never cleaned or made up. We called mouse keeping. She wasn't very friendly and seemed put out we still wanted the room made up. We had dinner at Pepper Market and returned to the room and it was made up, but just the bare minimum. No towel animals or stuffed animal arrangements. Not very magical.
- The safe is very old fashioned and uses a key. Can't remember the last time I saw this!
- The shower curtain had some mold on it and there was hair on the floor by the tub. Other experiences at Disney had meant spotless rooms. Not this time.
- Overall I felt like I was staying in a generic motel rather than a Disney resort. I guess it was the outdoor hallways, little theming in the rooms, and that the room windows looked over the outdoor hallways. Also the fact that the room buildings looked like apartment buildings didn't help. The public areas of CSR were really lovely and themed nicely, it's just the room buildings that are very "standard".
- CSR is too spread out for me. I prefer the more compact resorts where there is a large main building (think Wilderness Lodge, Contemporary, Yacht Club, and even Polynesian & Grand Floridian) that includes rooms and everything is pretty much off that building (pools, restaurants, bus pick up, etc). CSR does have the main building, but the rest of the resort is VERY spread out. I understand this is more typical of the moderate and value resorts.
It may not sound like it, but I really did have a great time. Disney is magical no matter what, and being in the parks this time of year is really special. Everything is decorated beautifully for the holidays. We went to Epcot and the Magic Kingdom this trip, and even though it was Thanksgiving we didn't experience any excessive lines (except Soarin which we passed on). The MK was open until 1am and we stayed until closing and got on all the best rides with little to no wait.
Although CSR was a moderate resort, it still wasn't cheap. We could have stayed at the brand new Waldorf Astoria for the same price, but I choose CSR so we could enjoy that special Disney magic. I just didn't feel the magic like I have at other Disney resorts, and probably would have enjoyed the Waldorf just as much (if not more) even though it's not Disney. I haven't given up on the moderates, and perhaps next time would pick Riverside or Port Orleans as they look much more themed compared to CSR. They also have boat transport to Downtown Disney which I would enjoy. Better yet, I will likely wait until I can afford a deluxe resort as I've found they truly enhance my Disney experience!
If you have any questions, please let me know.
