MAINTENANCE FEES

If you look at the map, you can kind of sort of draw a line from the Studios station to AKL, and some people think that since you can draw that line, certainly Disney is going to eventually build the Skyliner so that Poor Little AKL can have something other than a bus.

I don't think any of that discussion rises to the level of "credible rumor" but that's just me.

Oh, you know. Just wishes and prayers. 😉

To be fair, I don’t think anyone said anything in this thread to the contrary. Only that it’s a topic of conversation and some people wish for it (and some do not).
Yes, we're in the 100% do-not column. Would be such an eyesore for such a picturesque/themed resort and park, and just seems completely unnecessary.... not to mention the potential for additional fees. We're happy to pay dues for the animals, not so much for Skyliner. Glad that this wish/rumor has not seemed to gain any traction over the past years.......

I totally get that perspective! And I personally doubt that it will happen.

I think the #1 reason it doesn't happen is that you'd pretty much have to route it directly over Sunset Blvd in Studios, and while Imagineering has made some compromises about sight lines in the past, that would be...a decision.
They could expand that crazy turn station before EPCOT and go over Coronado. Would add another moderate to the Skyliner.

Ive just seen people arguing about it here so I said I didnt want it 🤣 Ive never heard Disney say they are planning to do this!

When the current Skyliner was under construction, before the pandemic, there were reports that if it was as successful as expected, Disney planned another line from DHS to Coronado, the All Stars, AK, and AKV. And someplace in the DISboards archives are line drawings of what the route would look like. However, Covid seems to have changed or cancelled numerous plans, and it’s quite possible the Skyliner extension was among them.

I agree. I wish the would extend it, but it seems more like wishful thinking at this point. If you look at the map the distance from AKV to DHS it seems it would make it the longest stretch by a lot. It would not just be very expensive, but it would also take a looong time to get to parks given the speed of the skyliner. Probably a lot longer than a bus. Actually from a distance standpoint it might make more sense to add OKW, SSR and DS instead. Take a look at the map below. Green is the current Skyliner route, Red would be to AK & AK Lodge, Blue would be to OKW, SSR and DS. Obviously this is all for speculative fun :).

I know of no credible rumor. But a couple of thoughts. (1) The Skyliner already has one transfer station to change directions. So the issue of Sunset sightlines, I think, is a non-issue. (2) Like you, I'm not seeing how it makes financial sense for Disney to extend the Skyway to a DVC resort that is sold out and also regularly sells out its cash rooms. But the straight line in the other direction goes to Disney Springs. And I do imagine some interest in Disney trying to use the Skyliner to increase retail and dining revenue there. (Weekdays, at lunch, that place is pretty dead.). And if they're making that line to Springs--and paying for the gondolas and mechanical structures--how much more is it to connect up either AK or AKL or both and add a few extra Gondolas? If AKV had the Skyliner, could they charge an extra $50 per night per room? Probably. And could the DVC half be tacked on to current dues? Probably. (I'm guessing that is well under $1 per year per point, but still, it's something.). That, I think is the real issue, if Skyliner goes to DS, will it also go toward the Animal Kingdom area, especially if AKL becomes significantly more popular with the new land (which is yet to be seen).

Disney Springs may not get a skyliner because it wouldn’t be easy to cover the cost of people parking there to avoid paying theme park lot $35/car. Would the benefits to Disney outweigh that?

The skyliner looks more attractive than buses in that sense, to me at least. We usually have a car and I wouldn’t consider using the DS bus to save $35, but somehow the skyliner makes it much more palatable.

There are many ways to avoid the $35 parking charge. DS to bus to theme park. Dining reservation at nearby / non-crowded resort. Showing up at the TTC before (I think it's) 7am, when the gates are open to anyone who wants to self-park without charge. Disney's main market is families with young children. Sure, there are some who will use this work around to save $35. But for the vast majority, they aren't going to try to save $35 by parking over at DS and then taking (likely) multiple legs of a transportation system to reach their park for the day, especially with kids in tow. Honestly, if you were doing this, the bus system is far more convenient than the Skyliner--because the busses will take you directly to any park you want to go to.
