Cool book coming out...

On a similar topic, any of you gonna read DisneyWar or do you think it would dampen some of the magic for ya?

It's on my list to read. I've always viewed Disney primarily as a business, and every business has its warts. I'm sure there will be some passages that leave me shaking my head, but I tend not to dwell too much on 'what might have been.'

Thanks for pointing this out! My dh definitely wants it as soon as it comes out -- it's right up his alley. ;)

I have 75 pages left to go. It is a very interesting read IMHO and I have trouble putting it down. Was up unitl 1:00 A.M. this morning reading it. It really shows the innner conflicts that exist in the company and how ME has had his ups and downs. It is very pro Roy D.

Not as much in it as I was hopping regarding the theme parks or hotel side of the business. A lot on the movie and tv side and the personal relationships. Not a mention of DVC.

Thanks for the info, Shan. I'll look for it next time I'm in the book store.

I recently bought "The Gospel According to Disney: Faith, Trust and Pixie Dust" by Mark I. Pinsky. It explores the values and lessons that Disney tries to teach through its movies. Haven't started it yet, so don't know if it's worthwhile or not. But in skimming through it, it really does seem to delve deep into the messages in the movies.

Hubby is reading DisenyWar first. I'm still half way into a Harry Potter book that I've been nursing for over a month!

The Imagineering Field Guide to Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World

Hubby stumbled across this today. It is one of those pocket size books.

I'll definitely be reading "DisneyWar" (I've already read quite a few excerpts and reviews). I have to say it's a shame that a company once renowned for fostering creativity and a sense of family among its employees is now under such tyrannical management. From what I understand, even the CM's at the parks have been feeling the strain-- very sad. :sad2:

Hopefully, this book's release will force Disney's Board of Directors to make whatever changes are necessary and get things back to the way Walt would have wanted them, instead of following the typical corporate mentality (though I have my doubts). That's the only way I can think of to restore whatever magic has been lost over the past few years.

Thanks for the info on the "Field Guide", Shan. As for "DisneyWar", I'm going to read it; I figure if I can survive the "magic dampening" threads here on the DIS, I'll be fine with a little behind.the.scenes business info....

I finished "Disney War" and if you really want to see what goes on behind the scenes in the Disney executive suite, I encourage you all to read it. You can read a lot about the book on SaveDisney.com as well.

It is an amazing story of abuse of power and waiste of money that all Disney fans should read.

Years ago I read Storming the Magic Kingdom, which had all sorts of inside stories (unauthorized) about park operations. It was very entertaining, and showed some glimpses of Kingdom history that you won't find elsewhere.

The fact that Disney War was actually authorized makes it that much more interesting. The author had lots of access to ME himself. That alone makes it all the more interesting that it came out so anti ME and the current board.

I just finished chapter 12 of DisneyWar. I also have a hard time putting it down. Stayed up until midnight last night. It's very interesting. I don't think it destroys the magic of WDW. That's still there no matter what. I know hindsight is 20/20, but the things they passed on.. Survivor, CSI, Lord of the Rings. :confused3 What were they thinking??????

I'm reading Jimmy Buffet's new book. It's a nice escape from reality. Along those lines, The Imagineering Field Guide looks like something I'd enjoy. I really like the WDW Trivia Book and Hidden Mickey book.

I didn't have much interest in Disney War, but after reading some of the comments in this post, maybe I will pick it up. I obviously love WDW and all of its magic, but I realize it's a business. I don't think this book would diminish my experiences there. Still, before I go to sleep I'd rather read about the forced perspective on Main Street than the forced retirement of Roy.

I finished DisneyWar this weekend. A great read. Really makes you wonder how much impact it had on the boards announcement that Iger is going to be CEO and ME is stepping down 1 year early.

I think it had a lot to do with it. The book made the board look like a bunch of wimps and ME as controlling them. George Mitchell can help broker peace in Norhtern Ireland but lets ME run all over the board? Something is wrong with that picture.

DH is reading Disney War right now, then I plan read it. I still can't believe they passed on CSI! Look at what that show/shows has done for CBS.

And the Apprentice now on NBC. And that Steve Jobs (Pixar and Apple) will have nothing to do with Disney as long as ME's around!

Lol! While I love Disney movies and let my girls watch them, I'm a little wary of the massage they seem to drive home. My friends and I discuss this all the time. There are usually a bunch of recurring themes - especially for the princess movies - Never be satisfied with what you've got; the grass is always greener elsewhere; no respect for authority; as long as it "feels" right, then it's all right to break the rules; etc.

It makes for great movies, but as a parent trying to instill obedience and a respect for parental authority in their children, it sure doesn't help! :rolleyes1

It sounds like I've got some reading to do. Was there ever a poll out there asking how many DVC members were also Disney shareholders?
