Convince me that a summer trip to Sedona/Grand Canyon is bearable

OP here: I am a "regular" to Tripadvisor and have asked some questions there as well. I am completely convinced that this is a vacation that can definitely for done in the summer.

Yes--rental cars are not cheap in Phoenix, and airfare at this point isn't a bargain either. Oh well, plenty of time before July!

I can't convince you of anything, but your post got me looking west for a vacation for my family. I think I'm settling on Durango, Colorado for our next family vacation. TONS to do there! Horseback riding, rafting, cliff dwellings, caves, train ride.....WOW! (AND it's fairly affordable! )

two words: Spring Break

We were in Phx/Sedona and the Grand Canyon in September. It was hawt!!!! Really hawt!!!

I was also at the GC over Spring Break once. It snowed. It was freezing. Sedona was okay then, but cool at night. I would do the summer without hesitation.

I've been to Durango and there are tons to do. We did the Mesa Verde cliff dwellings, the Silverton train--took a jeep tour up and the train back. When we left, we drove up the Million Dollar Highway to Uray--Switzerland of the U.S.--and toured, then to Montrose and Black Canyon of the Gunnison N.P. and over to Telluride. We did it all in less than a week.

We are considering a summer trip (July) to the Sedona/Grand Canyon area. I so want to see this area of the country, but as a school teacher, we only vacation in the summer. Am I crazy? I've done Florida in the heat and humidity and survived, did Cancun last summer (extremely hot and humid). I don't want to burst into flames during my vacation and I don't want to spend my entire vacation either in the water or in the hotel room.

Travelers would be myself, DH and DD (17). We love hiking, sightseeing, etc., but are afraid of the heat.

Yes, do it! We went out last summer June 29-July7 and it was awesome! I know it sounds cliche, but it IS a dry heat. If you can stand Florida in the summertime, you'll be okay in the dry heat of the southwest - just drink plenty of water.

We flew into Vegas and spent a night there, swung by Hoover Dam, then we went to LaVerkin, UT (where my sister and BIL live) and spent a night before heading off for a few days at their house on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon (totally worth the drive to spend a few nights on the North Rim of the GC - so different than the South Rim - woodsier & cooler).
From there we did a very long day at the South Rim. Back to the north rim for the 4th of July and "Waterworks" (so fun!), then back to LaVerkin as the base for the rest of our stay. We spent a day at Zion National Park and a day at Bryce Canyon.

Absolutely, do it if you have the time - you won't regret it!
