Controversies over Snow White remake

Some in the Dwarf community feel that Peter Dinklage should not speak for all of them

This is one movie I can’t wait to see! 😆
100 years from now, Disney movies probably won’t be a thing and everyone’s great grand kids will be saying why was any of this a big deal? Or what’s a movie? People who want to see a modern version will and those who prefer the cartoon won’t. Disney changes with the times, as do we all. :confused3

actually I conclude the problem was with the names from watching that content on tv.......that, outside of Doc....are all negative attributes....yes being happy can be negative. so I am looking to them having professions with postive influences. radio dj, taxi driver, hair dresser, shrink, body builder, tom brady...

but the big question is....is Cyrano going to really work????????????

I imagine if Disney made a movie and included an unflattering depiction of Disney fans there would be a 400 page thread here saying negative things.

Just because something doesn’t matter to you, doesn’t mean it doesn’t matter.
Does that mean you are an advocate of taking offence on somebody else's behalf?

I think they both have a point, the only way to get actors with dwarfism in non stereotypical roles, is by speaking up. The downside is that can also mean the actors lose out when changes to stories like Snow White are made. Peter Dinklage has a point in speaking up, the other less successful actors have a point about losing jobs and income.

I am sure that in the 1950s coloured actors who spoke up about always being cast in side characters, always the help/maid characters etc, caused for coloured actors to lose out on jobs.

I have more problems with a Latina actress playing Snow White if they keep the name. The name described the appearance of the character. If it is just going to be a princess with an evil stepmother not named Snow White, I am fine. I just hope they dont keep the name and give a BS reasoning for that her skin isnt as white as snow, but her name is.

Cyrano is going to be amazing. I loved the trailer and cant wait for its release.
And I think the essence of the story is Cyrano doesnt have a normal / handsome appearance, if it is his nose or something else doesnt really matter to me. I do hope they will give Peter Dinklage some awesome fight scenes, as it is one of the ways how Cyrano got the respect of his men.

Not necessarily, but aren’t you taking offence at his taking offence?
But I haven't taken offence with either the film studio or the actor.
I understand the reasoning behind your comment " Just because something doesn’t matter to you, doesn’t mean it doesn’t matter". It is redolent of the Martin Neimoller poem "First they came for..." but my concern is that many of these matters are overdramatised and social media allows and encourages people to jump onto bandwagons for the sake of virtue signalling.
The old mantra, "your mileage may vary" is in danger of being subsumed by "your mileage is not allowed to vary because we say so".

Everything offends somebody these days. People need to get a job and stop looking at every story, book, movie, etc., for a way to get rid of it.
Getting a job is the point of the discussion. Because of Peter Dinklage asking for more diverse roles for actors with dwarfism, others are out of a job.

The thing is though that the characters are not "dwarfs" as in humans with dwarfism, they are dwarfs as in the fantasy creatures like Gimli in Lord of the Rings. They are a distinct, and fictional, species known for their stout frame, long beards, and skills at mining and metalworking. Certainly it's great to advocate for more roles for actors with dwarfism, but there's no reason that these particular roles should be singled out.

I can see both sides. We should be far enough along where actors with dwarfism aren’t type cast. On the other hand, this gives them jobs and exposure in the movie industry. I’ve read both sides in the media from actors with dwarfism and not sure what the right answer is.

Wasn't this guy in "Elf"?
That's indeed part of the problem, it gives them exposure, but is it the right exposure? There is a House episode with a woman with dwarfism. One of the remarks she makes is about being called names, like being called an elf around Christmas etc. The stereotypes in movies and media have real life consequences.

He was in the movie so it's safe to assume he was OK with that exposure for himself.
Now apparently when it could be someone else's turn to profit from a role he feels he needs to speak up/out? Personally I think that is part of the problem.........

Peter Dinklage has spoken out more often hating the beginning of his career because he was condemned to certain parts as he wasn't a known actor, and at a certain point it's then about: To eat or not to eat, that is the question.
There are plenty of actors, of all shapes and sizes who do jobs because principles do not buy you dinner or pay the rent.

But it takes people at the top to say 'hey, this isn't right'. Someone at the bottom doesn't have the same impact.

From Hattie McDaniel's wiki page (yes, I know, it's not the most reliable source), the first woman of colour to receive an Oscar:
As her fame grew, McDaniel faced growing criticism from some members of the black community. Groups such as the NAACP complained that Hollywood stereotypes not only restricted black actors to servant roles but often portrayed them as lazy, dim-witted, satisfied with lowly positions, or violent. In addition to addressing the studios, they called upon actors, and especially leading black actors, to pressure studios to offer more substantive roles and at least not pander to stereotypes. They also argued that these portrayals were unfair as well as inaccurate and that, coupled with segregation and other forms of discrimination, such stereotypes were making it difficult for all black people, not only actors, to overcome racism and succeed in the entertainment industry.
