Controversies over Snow White remake

I told Disney years ago to stop with the live actions. They didn't listen to me. So now I just watch all the drama unfold with a big bowl of popcorn. :drinking1 popcorn::

I get what you are saying. When the American Bar Association starts howling in contempt and sues Disney because its portrayal of lawyers in the Shaggy D.A. you know things are out of hand. :)

I have no intention of seeing the movie. The animated one was perfect just as it is. No reason to mess it up by “reimagining” it. Snow White is supposed to be white. And the dwarves don’t live in a cave.

I won't see the live action versions unless they are true to the animated stories, just what I want to see. I'm not going to complain, just not watch them is all. Some live action Disney movies I did like were Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast.

I also took the dwarfs as being non-human. In Disney animated movies, even humans can take on exaggerated shape, so it's understandable if the lines blur. I love the original Snow White, but the dwarf scenes ... how much hand washing do we need to see? Disney should have used that footage for COVID PSAs.

Remember in the Charlize Theron Huntsman movies, they used non-dwarf actors as dwarves, in the same way as in the Lord of the Rings films. Not sure if there was any controversy there.

Those dwarves were not treated in a demeaning way. Since it was a Universal movie they wouldn't have been able to follow the characterization of the classic Disney dwarves anyway, so they had to be different. (But I also think the Huntsman movies themselves were heavily influenced by LOTR, so they were likely taking a page from what's already been done.)

Honestly, except for the live action of Cinderella and Mulan, the other live action Disney movies have fallen with a big thud (to me at least). I'm sure they did ok in the box office, but eh. Those are the only two I would re-watch.

Maleficent was good, but I wouldn't re-watch it. Maleficent 2 was yuck.

Yeah, they did okay at the box office all right:

Beauty and hte Beast (2017): $1,273,576,220
Aladdin (2019): $1,050,693,953
The Lion King (2019): $1,662,899,439

I'm not crazy about a lot of them either, but Audiences eat this stuff up! That's why Disney keeps making them.

I watched BATB at the box office because we loved the animated movie. It was difficult to hear the auto-tune. It was like, please back in the 50s and 60s, they lip-synced and actual singers sang in their place, please do that!

If we plan on changing the original story that Disney released for 'Snow White' then shall we name it a different name? Maybe this is why Walt didn't like part two to any movie. If it's a remake, it should stay close to the same story. If another story, name it accordingly. I hate what is going on......

I haven't liked any of the ones I've seen enough to ever rewatch. None of them are anywhere near as good as the animated originals.

Pretty much. I liek the ones where they try to do something different, like Dumbo, but Dumbo went largely overlooked while the straight remakes make a billion dollars at the box office. I mean, I get it, but I'd never watch the live action BatB over the animated one - never. Maybe if the animated one never existed then I'd think it was a pretty good movie - but it does. The animated BatB, Lion King - they're absolute masterpieces!

The live action films are often played so close to the original stories of the animated ones that you can't help but compare. I haven't seen the Lion King remake, but I heard that was shot-for-shot identical. Reproducing the same picture seems pointless besides turning it into a visual effects showcase and a vehicle for big name cast members.

Mulan and Cinderella felt a little different in some respects. Mulan was done more to the tune of modern Chinese action films while Cinderella in Kenneth Branagh's hands felt more like a period drama with fantasy elements. Cate Blanchet was good and didn't go for an over-the-top cartoonish villain. But overall, meh. I'm really surprised to see live action Cinderella as Pam Anderson, I love when actors go for varied roles like that.

Beauty and the Beast especially lost me with the Beast himself, and the castle servants were not as expressive and lively as you get with the animated versions. Aladdin at least had some decent sequences, especially the Arabian Nights intro with the flyover leading to the opening of the secret cave in the sands. Watching these remakes, you know you're riding the rails to the same ending you saw in the original, and can only hope for some original moments.

When I see a live action Disney movie I want it to be as if the animatied movie came to life. I want everyone to look a much like the animated character as possible. I LOVED Aladdin and I think we saw it about 7 times in the theater and a few times at home.

What exactly is going on that you hate? Who says it’s changing the original story?
